The main objective of this paper is the robust multi-objective optimization design of semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) system using genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic. For optimal design of this system, it is required that the uncertainties which may exist in the system be taken into account. This consideration is performed through the robust design optimization (RDO) procedure. To evaluate the optimal values of the design parameters, three non-commensurable objective functions namely: normalized values of the maximum displacement, velocity, and acceleration of each story level are considered to minimize simultaneously. For this purpose, a fast and elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) approach is used to find a set of Pareto-optimal solutions. The torsional effects due to irregularities of the building and/or unsymmetrical placements of the dampers are taken into account through the 3-D modeling of the building. Finally, the comparison of the results shows that the probabilistic robust STMD system is capable of providing a reduction of about 52%, 42.5%, and 37.24% on the maximum displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the building top story, respectively.

Shape optimization of airfoil in WIG craft has been performed by considering the ground effect. The WIG craft should satisfy various aerodynamic characteristics such as lift, lift to drag ratio, and static height stability. However, they show a strong trade-off phenomenon so that it is difficult to satisfy aerodynamic properties simultaneously. Optimization is carried out through the multi-objective genetic algorithm. A multi-objective optimization means that each objective is considered separately instead of weighting. Due to the trade-off, pareto sets and non-dominated solutions can be obtained instead of the unique solution. NACA0015 airfoil is considered as a baseline model, shapes of airfoil are parameterized and rebuilt with four-Bezier curves. There are eighteen design variables and three objective functions. The range of design variables and their resolutions are two primary keys for the successful optimization. By two preliminary optimizations, the variation can be reduced effectively. After thirty evolutions, the non-dominated pareto individuals of twenty seven are obtained. Pareto sets are all the set of possible and excellent solution across the design space. At any selections of the pareto set, these are no better solutions in all design space.
The fabric braided braking hose that delivers the driver's braking force to brake cylinder undergoes the large deformation cyclic motion according to the steering and bump/rebound motions of vehicle. The cyclic large deformation of braking hose may give rise to two critical problems: the interference with other adjacent vehicle parts and the micro cracking stemming from the fatigue damage accumulation. Hence, both the hose deformation and the fatigue damage become the critical issue in the design of braking hose. In this context, this paper introduces a multi-objective optimization method for minimizing the both quantities. The total length of hose and the helix angles of fabric braided composite layers are chosen for the design variables, and the maximum hose deformation and the critical fatigue life cycle are defined by the individual single objective functions. The trade-off between two single objective functions is made by introducing the weighting factors. The proposed optimization method is validated and the improvement of initial hose design is examined through the benchmark simulation. Furthermore, the dependence of optimum solutions on the weighting factors is also investigated.

Dynamic process planning requires not only more flexible capabilities of a CAPP system but also higher utility of the generated process plans. In order to meet the requirements, this paper develops an algorithm that can select machines for the machining operations by calculating the machine loads. The developed algorithm is based on the multi-objective genetic algorithm that gives rise to a set of optimal solutions (in general, known as the Pareto-optimal solutions). The objective is to satisfy both the minimization number of part movements and the maximization of machine utilization. The algorithm is characterized by a new and efficient method for nondominated sorting through K-means algorithm, which can speed up the running time, as well as a method of two stages for genetic operations, which can maintain a diverse set of solutions. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by comparing with another multiple objective genetic algorithm, called NSGA-II and branch and bound algorithm.
In the past decades, several algorithms based on evolutionary approaches have been proposed for solving job shop scheduling problems (JSP), which is well-known as one of the most difficult combinatorial optimization problems. Most of them have concentrated on finding optimal solutions of a single objective, i.e., makespan, or total weighted tardiness. However, real-world scheduling problems generally involve multiple objectives which must be considered simultaneously. This paper proposes an efficient particle swarm optimization based approach to find a Pareto front for multi-objective JSP. The objective is to simultaneously minimize makespan and total tardiness of jobs. The proposed algorithm employs an Elite group to store the updated non-dominated solutions found by the whole swarm and utilizes those solutions as the guidance for particle movement. A single swarm with a mixture of four groups of particles with different movement strategies is adopted to search for Pareto solutions. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a set of benchmark problems and compared with the results from the existing algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of providing a set of diverse and high-quality non-dominated solutions.

One of the important problems in the vehicle design is vehicle handling and stability. Effective parameters which should be considered in the vehicle handling and stability are roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius. In this paper, a planar vehicle model is considered that two right and left suspensions are double wishbone suspension system. For a better analysis of the suspension geometry, a kinestatic model of vehicle is considered which instantaneous kinematic and statics relations are analyzed simultaneously. In this model, suspension geometry is considered completely. In order to optimum design of double wishbones suspension system, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is applied. Three important parameters of suspension including roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius are taken into account as objective functions. Coordinates of suspension hard points are design variables of optimization which optimum values of them, corresponding to each optimum point, are obtained in the optimization process. Pareto solutions for three objective functions are derived. There are important optimum points in these Pareto solutions which each point represents an optimum status in the model. In other words, corresponding to any optimal point, a specific geometric position is determined for the suspension hard points. Each of the obtained points in the Pareto optimization can be selected for a special design purpose by designer to create an optimum condition in the vehicle handling and stability.

Plastic mold designers and frequently faced with optimizing multi-quality issues in injection molded parts. These issues are usually in conflict with each other and thus tradeoff needs to be made to reach a final compromised solution. in this study an automated injection molding design methodology has been developed to optimize multi-quality characteristics of injection molded parts. The features of the proposed methodology are as follows : first utility theory is applied to transform the original multi-objective problem into single-objective problem. Second is an implementation of a direct search-based injection molding optimization procedure with automated consideration of robustness against process variation. The modified complex method is used as a general optimization tool in this study. The developed methodology was applied to an actual mold design and the results showed that the methodology was useful through the CAE simulation using a commercial injection molding software package. Applied to production this study will be of immense value to companies in reducing the product development time and enhancing the product quality.

Water security issues, stimulated by increasing population and changing climate, are growing and pausing major challenges for water resources managers around the world. Proper utilization, management and distribution of all available water resources is key to sustainable development for achieving water security To alleviate the water shortage, most of the current research on multi-sources combined water supplies depends on an overall generalization of regional water supply systems, which are seldom broken down into the detail required to address specific research objectives. This paper proposes the concept of optimization framework on multi water sources selection. A multi-objective water allocation model with four objective functions is introduced in this paper. Harmony search algorithm is employed to solve the applied model. The objective functions addresses the economic, environmental, and social factors that must be considered for achieving a sustainable water allocation to solve the issue of water security.

This paper proposes an optimal design method for the nonlinear seismic isolated bridge. The probabilities of failure at the pier and the seismic isolator are considered as objective functions for optimal design, and a multi-objective optimization technique is employed to efficiently explore a set of multiple solutions optimizing mutually-conflicting objective functions at the same time. In addition, a stochastic linearization method is incorporated into the multi-objective optimization framework in order to effectively estimate the stochastic responses of the bridge without performing numerous nonlinear time history analyses during the optimization process. As a numerical example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, the Nam-Han river bridge is taken into account, and the proposed method and the existing life-cycle-cost based design method are both applied for the purpose of comparing their seismic performances. The comparative results demonstrate that the proposed method not only shows better seismic performance but also is more economical than the existing cost-based design method. The proposed method is also proven to guarantee improved performance under variations in seismic intensity, in bandwidth and in the predominant frequency of the seismic event.
