  • The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.

  • In this paper, we present a new finite Timoshenko beam element with a model for ultimate load computation of reinforced concrete frames. The proposed model combines the descriptions of the diffuse plastic failure in the beam-column followed by the creation of plastic hinges due to the failure or collapse of the concrete and or the re-bars. A modified multi-scale analysis is performed in order to identify the parameters for stress-resultant-based macro model, which is used to described the behavior of the Timoshenko beam element. The micro-scale is described by using the multi-fiber elements with embedded strain discontinuities in mode 1, which would typically be triggered by bending failure mode. A special attention is paid to the influence of the axial force on the bending moment - rotation response, especially for the columns behavior computation.

  • Bogie frame of the locomotive is an important structural member for the support of vehicle loading. A lot of study has been carried out for the prediction of the structural integrity of the bogie frame in experimental and theoretical domains. The objective of this paper is to estimate the structural integrity of the bogie frame. Strength analysis has been performed by finite element analysis. From these analysis, stress concentration areas were investigated. For evaluation of the loading conditions, dynamic stress were measured by using strain gage. It has been found that the stress and strain due to the applied loads were multi-axial condition according to the location of strain gage. The fatigue strength evaluations of the bogie frame are performed to investigate the effect of the multi-axial load through the employment of the critical plane approach.

  • Nuclear power plants in South Korea are operated to cover the baseload demand. Hence they are operated at 100% rated power and do not deploy power tracking control except for startup, shutdown, or during transients. However, as the contribution of renewable energy in the energy mix increases, load follow operation may be needed to cover the imbalance between consumption and production due to the intermittent nature of electricity produced from the conversion of wind or solar energy. Load follow operation may be quite challenging since the operators need to control the axial power distribution and core reactivity while simultaneously conducting the power maneuvering. In this paper, a systems engineering approach for multi-physics load follow simulation of APR1400 is performed. RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4/3DKIN multi-physics package is selected to simulate the Korean Advanced Power Reactor, APR1400, under load follow operation to reflect the impact of feedback signals on the system safety parameters. Furthermore, the systems engineering approach is adopted to identify the requirements, functions, and physical architecture to provide a set of verification and validation activities that guide this project development by linking each requirement to a validation or verification test with predefined success criteria.

  • The purpose of this paper is to compare with estimation of equivalent fatigue load in time domain and frequency domain and estimate the fatigue life of structure with multi-axial vibration loading. The fatigue analysis with two methods is implemented with various signals like random, sinusoidal signals. Also an equivalent fatigue life estimated by rainflow cycle counting in time domain is compared with results estimated with probability density function of each signal in frequency domain. In case of frequency domain, equivalent fatigue life can estimate through Dirlik's method with probability density function. And the work proposed in this paper compared the fatigue damage accumulated under uni-axial loading to that induced by multi-axial loading. The comparison is preformed for a simple cantilever beam, which is exposed to vibrations of several directions. For verification of estimation performance of fatigue life, results are compared to those of FEM analysis (ANSYS).

  • Numerical studies are performed to predict the stress-strain behavior of rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops under axial and eccentric compressions. Using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS, the Drucker-Prager criterion and the yield surface are adopted for damaged plasticity concrete. The proposed finite element models are compared with the published experimental data. Parametric studies on concrete grades, confinement arrangement, diameter and spacing of hoops and eccentricity of load are followed. Numerical results have shown good agreements with experimental values, and indicated a proper constitutive law and model for concrete. Cross-sectional areas and spacing of the hoops have significant effect on the bearing capacity. It can be concluded that rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops show better performance than the conventional ones.

  • Highly over-expanded nozzle of the rocket engines will be excited by non-axial forces due to flow separation at sea level operations. Since rocket engines are designed to produce axial thrust to power the vehicle, non-axial static and/or dynamic forces are not desirable. Several engine failures were attributed to the side loads. Present work investigate the unsteady flow in an over-expanded rocket nozzle in order to estimate side load during a shutdown/starting. Numerical computations has been carried out with density based solver on multi-block structured grid. Present solver is explicit in time and unsteady time step is calculated using dual time step approach. AUSMDV is considered as a numerical scheme for the flux calculations. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. Results presented here is for two nozzle pressure ratio i.e. 100 and 20. At 100 NPR, restricted shock separation (RSS) pattern is observed while, 20 NPR shows free shock separation (FSS) pattern. Side load is observed during the transition of separation pattern at different NPR.

  • In this article, the multi-objective optimization of cylindrical aluminum tubes under axial impact load is presented. The specific absorbed energy and the maximum crushing force are considered as objective functions. The geometric dimensions of tubes including diameter, length and thickness are chosen as design variables. D/t and L/D ratios are constricted in the range of which collapsing of tubes occurs in concertina or diamond mode. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions. A back-propagation neural network is constructed as the surrogate model to formulate the mapping between the design variables and the objective functions. The finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used to generate the training and test sets for the artificial neural networks. To validate the results of finite element model, several impact tests are carried out using drop hammer testing machine.

  • In this study, an optimized design of a triaxial load cell has been developed by the use of finite element analysis, design of experiment and response surface method. The developed optimal design was further validated by both stress-strain analysis and natural vibration analysis under an applied load of 30 kgf. When vertical, horizontal, and axial loads of 30 kgf were applied to the load cell with the optimal design, the calculated strains were satisfied with the required strain range of $500{\times}10^{-6}{\pm}10%$. The natural vibration analysis exhibited that the fundamental natural frequency of the optimally designed load cell was 5.56 kHz and higher enough than a maximum frequency of 0.17 kHz which can be applied to the load cell for wind-tunnel tests. The satisfactory sensitivity in all triaxial directions also suggests that the currently proposed design of the triaxial load cell enables accurate measurements of the multi-axial forces in wind-tunnel tests.

  • The apparently different physical problems of lateral vibration and elastic stability of a linear member are limiting cases of a single phenomenon, the more general expression being the mode of vibration with end thrust. For a single-span beam-column, it is generally known that the square of the frequency of lateral vibration is approximately linearly related to compressive axial force. In this paper the relationship between the frequency and axial force of multi-span compression members is investigated by means of the finite element method.
