  • In this paper, a Kriging metamodel-based multi-objective optimization strategy in conjunction with an NSGA-II(non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II) has been employed to optimize the valve-plate shape of the axial piston pump utilizing 3D CFD simulations. The optimization process for minimum pressure ripple and maximum pump efficiency is composed of two steps; (1) CFD simulation of the piston pump operation with various combination of six parameters selected based on the optimization principle, and (2) applying a multi-objective optimization approach based on the NSGA-II using the CFD data set to evaluate the Pareto front. Our exploration shows that we can choose an optimal trade-off solution combination to reach a target efficiency of the axial piston pump with minimum pressure ripple.

  • Piles and pile foundations have been in common use since very early times. Usually function of piles is to carry load to a depth at which adequate support is available. Another important use of piles is to furnish lateral support and nowadays it is getting highlighted due to the wind load, lateral action of earthquake, and so on. After Broms (1964), many researchers have been suggested methods for estimating lateral capacity of pile. But each method assumes different earth pressure distribution and lateral earth pressure coefficient and it gives confusion to pile designers. Lateral earth pressure, essential in lateral capacity estimation, influenced by pile's behavior under lateral load. Prasad and Chari (1999) assumed the rotation point of pile and suggested an equation of ultimate lateral load capacity. In this study, we investigate the depth of rotation point in both homogeneous soil and multi layered soil, and compare to the estimation value by previous research. To model the pile set up in the sand, we use the chamber and small scale steel pile, and rain drop method. Test results show the rotation point is formed where the Prasad and Chari's estimation value, and they also show multi layered condition affects to location of rotation point to be scattered.

  • An analyzing method for pressure fluctuations in oil hydraulic pipe network was developed in this study. The object pipe network has multi-branch configuration, and the pipelines of it are composed of steel tubes, flexible hoses. Also, accumulators, orifices and lumped oil volume components are attached on it. Transfer matrix method, in other words impedance method, was used for the analysis. The reliability and usefulness of the analyzing method were confirmed by investigation computed results and experimental results got in this study.

  • A numerical analysis was made In investigate the pressure diminution of a silencer with baffles for high pressure blast flow fields. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved for an axisymmetric computational domain constructed by multi block Chimera grids. A blast flow field was calculated for the silencers that are with one and three baffles. The evolution of high pressure blast flow fields was observed by depicting calculated contours of pressure. It was found that the tested silencer could achieve 97.7 percent pressure diminution.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the feature of spontaneous ignition of hydrogen within a certain length of downstream tube released by the failure of pressure boundaries of various geometric assumption. The results show that the ignition feature can be varied with the shape of pressure boundary. The ignition at the contact region are developed at the spherical pressure boundaries due to multi-dimensional shock interactions, whereas the local ignition is developed in limited area such as boundary layer at the planar pressure boundary conditions. The spontaneous ignition inside the tube can be generated from the reaction region of only boundary layer regardless of existence of the reaction of core region.

  • Wave-induced response, liquefaction and stability of unsaturated seabed are studied. The unsaturated seabed is modeled as a fluid-filled polo-elastic medium. The coupled process of fluid flow and the deformation of soil skeleton is formulated in the framework of Biot's theory. The resulting governing equations are solved using a semi-analytical method to evaluate the stresses and pore water pressure of unsaturated and multi-layered seabed. The semi-analytical method can be applied to calculate a pore pressure and the stresses of in anisotropic inhomogeneous seabed. The results indicate that the degree of saturation influences mostly on the magnitudes of a pore pressure and the stresses of unsaturated and multi-layed seabed. Based on the pore pressure and stresses in seabed, the analysis on the possibilities of liquefaction and shear failure was performed. The results show that the maximum depth of shear failure occurrence is deeper than the maximum liquefaction depth.

  • Recently, evacuation safety of building resident become the major concern, as the building has been higher and more complicated. Many high-rise multi use buildings are under construction in Korea. Required evacuation time using stairway is longer in high-rise buildings, moreover it is impossible for the disabled to evacuate by using stairway. For this reason the study on the effectiveness of using elevator for evacuation is progressing. This study shows the pressure change in various types of hoistway when elevator is moving. Experiments were performed in 4 different types of hoistway, and showed big difference in pressure change between the type of hoistway. The pressure change in single hoistway that have one car is bigger than that in multi hoistway that have multi cars. The results of this study can be used for the study of elevator piston effect as basic data.
