  • In this paper, the equalization for frequency slope of path loss in Multi-Band(MB) OFDM UWB is proposed. The path loss of a signal is proportionate to the square of the signal's frequency. So, the received signal amplitudes of OFDM subcarrier can be different up to 3dB when MB-OFDM occupies bandwidth over 1.5GHz. The differences of subcarrier-amplitudes make an effective of 0.3 bit reduction of soft decision bits of viterbi decoder, and when the effective of 0.3 bit reduction can cause 0.5dB SNR degradation. This paper proposes two modem architectures which compensate for the degraded subcarrier by multiplying the reciprocal of degraded values in analog or digital domain. It is shown that, for the proposed architecture applied to MB-OFDM UWB, the performance improvements up to 0.5dB can be obtained over the conventional uncompensated receiver architecture.

  • Many researches on the multi-level QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) which is known to be a promising digital data transmission method for efficient use of channel bandwidth have been carried on, and their applications to various real fields are now being in progress. However, in the band-limited communication systems, each transmitted symbols is distorted by the ISI(Intersymbol Interference) and the phase error. Therefore, an equalizer and a carrier recovery must be taken into considerations to attenuate the effects of these distortions in the receiver. This paper presents an effective receiver structures that is applicable to the multi-level QAM. The proposed receiver system is consisted of an equalizer with Godard’s blind algorithm and a carrier recovery circuit. The phase error is estimated with a $\theta$-matching algorithm and is used in the carrier recovery to recover the correct phase. The simulation results are included to evaluate performance of the proposed receiver system for the various channel models.

  • In an IMBE (Improved Multi-band Excitation) speech coder, initial pitch estimation occupies most of the total computing time for the coder due to complex cost function and exhaustive search over candidate pitches. Future frames in initial pitch estimation cause inevitable time delay. Therefore, it is difficult to implement a real-time coder. Furthermore, unvoiced frames use the unnecessary pitch estimation as in the voiced frames. In this paper, each frame is determined voiced or unvoiced by Dyadic Wavelet Transform (DyWT) and, then, initial pitch estimation is performed only for voiced frame. Therefore different pitch estimation algorithms are employed between voiced and unvoiced frames incurring reduced time delay at transmitter and receiver. Simulation result show that the relative complexity of initial pitch estimation is reduced by 23%, and the processing time decreases down to 1/10 ∼ 1/1l of the IMBE coder while speech quality is almost maintained.

  • Design of X-band frequency FMCW based imaging radar with multi-resolutions and performances of the self-manufactured radar system are presented in this study. In order to implement the multi-bandwidths, a ramp sequence of the FMCW signal is consisting of two kinds of 'saw-tooth' waveform with different bandwidth, and a receiver circuit consisting of L-band source and frequency converter circuit is used to effectively extract spectra of beat-frequency from the received signal of X-band frequency. The system setups for performance measurement of self-manufactured radar system are maximum output power of 35 dBm, sampling frequency of 1.2 MHz and sweep time of 1 ms. Then, the measured resolutions of the modulated signal having bandwidth of 500 MHz and 300 MHz in range & azimuth-direction are (0.28 m, 0.26 m) and (0.44 m, 0.27 m), respectively.

  • This study is to design FMCW radar transceiver of K-band which is used to detect and track approaching high speed targets with low altitude. The transmitter needs high output power due to small RCS targets and wide beamwidth of transmit antenna. Multi-channel receivers are required to detect and track targets by interferometer method. Transmitter consists of high power amplifier, waveguide switch, and frequency up-converter. Receiver is composed of five channel receivers, up and down converters, X-band local oscillator and waveform generator. Before manufacturing it, the proposed architecture of transceiver is proved by modeling and simulation using several parameters. Then, it is manufactured by using industrial RF components. The performance parameters are measured through experiment. In the experiment, transmitting power and receiver gain were measured with 39.64 dBm and 29.1 dB, respectively. All other parameters in the specification were satisfied as well.

  • This paper presents how to design and implement a very compact, cost effective and broad band receiver module for IEEE 802.16 FWA(Fixed Wireless Access) in the 40 GHz band. The presented receiver module is fabricated in a multi-layer LTCC(Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) technology with cavity process to achieve excellent electrical performances. The receiver consists of two MMICs, low noise amplifier and sub-harmonic mixer, an embedded image rejection filter and an IF amplifier. CB-CPW, stripline, several bond wires and various transitions to connect each element are optimally designed to keep transmission loss low and module compact in size. The LTCC is composed of 6 layers of Dupont DP-943 with relative permittivity of 7.1. The thickness of each layer is 100 um. The implemented module is $20{\times}7.5{\times}1.5\;mm^3$ in size and shows an overall noise figure of 4.8 dB, an overall down conversion gain of 19.83 dB, input P1 dB of -22.8 dBm and image rejection value of 36.6 dBc. Furthermore, experimental results demonstrate that the receiver module is suitable for detection of Digital TV signal transmitted after up-conversion of $560\~590\;MHz$ band to 40 GHz.

  • A software GNSS signal generator for the GPS L1/L2/L5 and Galileo E1/E5 signals is proposed in this paper. And this signal generator is designed and implemented with several components by considering the reuse and expansion of components for similar GNSS signals. The characteristics of the reusability of the components are confirmed with the carrier generation and the band-pass filter components. And the functionality of the GNSS multi-band IF signal generator is validated by using the commercial software GPS L1 receiver, and the performance of signal acquisition, tracking and accuracy of horizontal position error are analyzed for this validation. As a result, the GPS L1 signal generator operates successfully and it could be expected that other signal generators also operate well because most of components are the same as those of the GPS L1 signal generator.

  • Owing to the advances in ADC and DSP technologies, signals in If band, which once had to be processed in analog technology, can new be digitally processed. This is referred to as "Digital IF" or "Digital Radio", which is a preliminary stage of SDR. Applying the digital radio technology to a multi-carrier receiver design, a processing gain is generated through an over-sampling of input data. In the digital receiver, decimation is performed for reducing the computational complexity CIC and half band filter is used together with the decimation as an anti-alising filter. The CIC filter, however, should introduce the roll-off phenomenon in the passband, which causes the receiving performance to be considerably degraded due to the distorted Passband flatness of receiving filter. In this paper, we designed a CIC roll-off compensation filter for W-CDMA digital receiver. The performance of the proposed compensation filter is confirmed through computer simulations in such a way that the BER is minimized by compensating the roll-off characteristics.off characteristics.

  • The IEEE 802.15.4a specification targets the low-rate (LR) Impulse-radio (IR) ultra-wideband (UWB) system which is now widely applied in the WPANs considering rather short distance communications with low complexity and power consumption. The physical (PHY) layer uses concatenated coding with mixed binary phase-shift keying and binary pulse-position modulation (BPSK-BPPM), and direct sequence spreading with time hopping in order that both coherent and non-coherent receiver architectures are supported. In this paper, the performances of multiple access schemes compliant with IEEE 802.15.4a specification are investigated with energy detection receiver, which allow avoiding the complex channel estimation needed by a coherent receiver. However, the performance of energy detection receiver is severely degraded by multi-user interference (MUI), which largely diminishes one of the most fascinating advantages of UWB, namely robustness to MUI as well as the possibility to allow parallel transmissions. So as to improve the performance of multiple access schemes, we propose to apply the novel TH sequences as well as to increase the number of TH positions. The simulation results show that our novel multiple access schemes significantly improve the performance against MUI.
