The Waimea Basin is located on the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a highly productive area with intense water use with multi-stakeholder interest in water. Irrigation from the underground aquifers here makes up the largest portion of used water; however the same aquifers are also the key urban and industrial sources of water. The Waimea/Wairoa Rivers are the main sources of recharge to the underlying aquifers and also feed the costal springs that highly valued by the community and iwi. Due to the location of the main rivers and springs close to the urban centre the water resource system here has high community and aesthetic values. Recent enhanced hydrological modelling work has shown the water resources in this area to be over allocated by 22% for a 1:10 year drought security for maintaining a minimalistic flow of 250 l/s in the lower Waimea River. The current irrigated land area is about 3700 hectares with an additional potential for irrigation of 1500 hectares. Further pressures are also coming on-line with significant population growth in the region. Recent droughts have resulted in significant water use cutbacks and the threat of seawater intrusion in the coastal margins. The Waimea Water Augmentation Committee (WWAC) initiated a three year stage 1 feasibility study in 2004/2005 into the viability of water storage in the upper parts of the catchment for enhancing water availability and its security of supply for consumptive, environmental, community and aesthetic benefits downstream. The project also sought to future proof water supply needs for the Waimea Plains and the surrounding areas for a 50 - 100 year planning horizon. The broad range stage 1 investigation programme has identified the Upper Lee Catchment as being suitable for a storage structure to provide the needs identified and also a possibility for some small scale hydro electricity generation as well. The stage 2 detailed feasibility investigations that are underway now (2007/2008), and to be completed in two years is to provide all details for progressing with the next stage of obtaining necessary permits for construction and commissioning a suitable dam.

The DISCOVER Project (${\underline{D}}istributed$${\underline{I}}nformation$${\underline{S}}ervices$ for ${\underline{C}}limate$ and ${\underline{O}}cean$ products and ${\underline{V}}isualizations$ for ${\underline{E}}arth$${\underline{R}}esearch$) is a NASA funded Earth Science REASoN project that strives to provide highly accurate, carefully calibrated, long-term climate data records and near-real-time ocean products suitable for the most demanding Earth research applications via easy-to-use display and data access tools. A key element of DISCOVER is the merging of data from the multiple sensors on multiple platforms into geophysical data sets consistent in both time and space. The project is a follow-on to the SSM/I Pathfinder and Passive Microwave ESIP projects which pioneered the simultaneous retrieval of sea surface temperature, surface wind speed, columnar water vapor, cloud liquid water content, and rain rate from SSM/I and TMI observations. The ocean products available through DISCOVER are derived from multi-sensor observations combined into daily products and a consistent multi-decadal climate time series. The DISCOVER team has a strong track record in identifying and removing unexpected sources of systematic error in radiometric measurements, including misspecification of SSM/I pointing geometry, the slightly emissive TMI antenna, and problems with the hot calibration source on AMSR-E. This in-depth experience with inter-calibration is absolutely essential for achieving our objective of merging multi-sensor observations into consistent data sets. Extreme care in satellite inter-calibration and commonality of geophysical algorithms is applied to all sensors. This presentation will introduce the DISCOVER products currently available from the web site, http://www.discover-earth.org and provide examples of the scientific application of both the diurnally corrected optimally interpolated global sea surface temperature product and the 4x-daily global microwave water vapor product.

This study is for the multi-dimensional analysis of diverse data sets for artificial reefs off the coast of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. Various data sets recorded in artificial reefs ground were integrated in new GIS software: to reveal the relationships between water temperature and fish schools; to visualize the quantitative connection between the reefs and the fish schools; and to compare the seabed types derived from two different data sources. The results obtained suggest that the application of GIS in analyzing multi-dimensional data is a better way to understand the characteristics of fish schools and environmental information around artificial reefs and particularly in the evaluation of the effectiveness of artificial reefs.
Magnetic multi-granule nanoclusters (MGNCs) were investigated as an inexpensive means to effectively remove arsenic from aqueous environment, particularly groundwater sources consumed by humans. Various size MGNCs were examined to determine both their capacity and efficiency for arsenic adsorption for different initial arsenic concentrations. The MGNCs showed highly efficient arsenic adsorption characteristics, thereby meeting the allowable safety limit of $10{\mu}g/L$ (ppb), prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and confirming that 0.4 g and 0.6 g of MGNCs were sufficient to remove 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L of arsenate ($AsO_4{^{3-}}$) from water, respectively. Adsorption isotherm models for the MGNCs were used to estimate the adsorption parameters. They showed similar parameters for both the Langmuir and Sips models, confirming that the adsorption process in this work was active at a region of low arsenic concentration. The actual efficiency of arsenate removal was then tested against 1 L of artificial arsenic-contaminated groundwater with an arsenic concentration of 0.6 mg/L in the presence of competing ions. In this case, only 1.0 g of 100 nm MGNCs was sufficient to reduce the arsenic concentrations to below the WHO permissible safety limit for drinking water, without adjusting the pH or temperature, which is highly advantageous for practical field applications.

The objective of this study is to determine the effect for the sound quality according to the noise source and to build the sound quality index of the laundry noise. In order to compare laundry noise among the influence of noise sources, we made virtual laundry noises by synthesizing an actual laundry noise and each noise source such as a dropping noise, water noise, motor noise and circulation pump noise. We conducted a listening test by customers using virtual laundry noises. As a result of listening test, we found that the dropping noise has a decisive effect on the sound quality of the laundry noise. We conducted the multi regression analysis of sound quality for the laundry noise using the statistical data processing. It is verified to the reliability of the multi regression index by comparison with listening results and index results of other actual laundry noises. This study is expected to provide a guide line for improvement of the laundry noise.
If pipes are damaged in a water distribution network (WDN), adjacent valves are closed to isolate the pipes for repair. Due to the closed valves, parts of WDN are isolated from water supply sources. The isolated area is divided into Intended Isolation Area (IIA) and Unintended Isolation Area (UIA). The IIA occurs by intention to isolate the damaged pipe, while UIA is unintentionally disconnected from the sources due to IIA. Thus, the extension of isolated area and suspended flows are mainly affected by number and location of installed valves in WDN. In this study, optimization models were developed to determine optimal valve locations in WDN. In a single-objective model, total water supply suspension is minimized, while a multi-objective model intends to simultaneously minimize the suspended flow and valve installation cost. Optimal valve placement results obtained from both models were compared and analyzed using a sample application network.

To investigate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) during production of perilla leaves, a total of 261 samples, including water, soil, surroundings of cultivation and packing, workers, and perilla leaves, was examined.. To trace the contamination sources of S. aureus related to perilla leaves, MLVA (Multi-Locous Variable number of tandem repeat Analysis), which is a very efficient method to discriminate strains with minimum molecular biology equipment was applied to S. aureus isolated from perilla leaves farms. S. aureus was isolated in perilla leaves from 9 of 38 farms at 0-2.92 log CFU/g. S. aureus was also found in working environment, including packing vinyl, worker clothes, irrigation water and hands. The patterns of MLVA of isolates from perilla leaves matched with those of isolates from packing table, irrigation water, packing vinyl, and hands. The isolates were successfully examined and determined by MLVA, thus elucidating S. aureus source and spread.

The focus of this paper is on the numerical investigation of obliquely incident wane interactions with a system composed of full submerged and floating dual buoy/vertical-flexible-membrane breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing. The fully submerged systems allow surface and bottom clearances to enable wave transmission over and under the system. The problem is formulated based on the two-dimensional multi-domain hydro-elastic linear wave-body interaction theory. The hydrodynamic interaction of oblique incident waves with the combination of the rigid and flexible bodies was solved by the distribution of the simple sources (modified Bessel function of fille second kind) tat satisfy the Helmholz governing equation. Using this computer program, the performance of various dual systems varying buoy radiuses and drafts, membrane lengths, clearances. spacing, mooring-lines stiffness, mooring types, water depth, and wave characteristics is thoroughly examined. It is found that the fully submerged and floating dual buoy/membrane breakwaters call, if it is properly tuned to the coming waves, have good performances ill reflecting the obliquely incident waves over a tilde range of wave frequency and headings.

Recently, estuary reserovoirs have been actively constructed in Korea and also in Japan there are a large number of estuary reservoirs constructed. But most of the estuary reservoirs are located at the downstream of a river where geographical condition is best for the construction of an enclosing dam. And an effective utilization of water from the estuary reservoir seems to be difficult even if estuary reservoirs are considered to be the water resources the most available for their watershed. Studies on estuary reservoirs so far have been mainly concentrated on the physical and engineering problems of the dam construction itself. The purpose of the present study is to review the estuary reservoir planning in connection with the water resources development and to study a basis of the planning. First, the levels of water use in Korea and Japan were compared with those of other countries in the world. And then, some representative reservoirs were selected to study the roles of a reservoir and water-using conditions in the watershed. Based on the study, a survey was given on the relation between a dam construction upstream and an estuary reservoir construction downstream of a river. Finally, a comprehensive examination was made of the bases of estuary reservoir planning. (1) The estuary reservoir planning is deeply related to the plan for water use develo- pment in the watershed. After the upstream water resources were fully developed up to the most, water reso- urces development by an estuary reservoir should be started. (2) If an estuary lake has a capacity big enough, it can store flood discharge of the watershed without any loss and become a basic facility that will bring about the maxi- mum use of water from the watershed. (3) Estuary reservoirs store water used in the upstream watershed, so recycling of water use is attained by the reservoir. Water in the estuary lake is difficult to be fresh water in its long run. Therefore, estuary reservoir should be located at a place where polluted water is purified and refused. All the planning should be based on the assumption that water in the estuary lake is not fresh but polluted after a long time. (4) The estuary lake can only supply water to the lower basin directly. But the upstream area is benefited from the estuary lake by exchange of irrigation water sources between the lower and the upper area. So a large-scale exchange plan between new and existing water resources is important. By constructing estuary reservoirs and the exchange of water sources between upper and lower areas, the reasonable maximum use of water from the whole watershed is at- tained. (5) The big problem coming from the water resources development by an enclosing estuary is salt water intrusion into the lake. To maintain the estuary lake salt-free, multi-purpose use of the lake should be avoided. It is necessary to take such fundamental measures as abolition of back flow operation of gate, and the closing of the fish port and the fish ladder. The results mentioned above were found in this study and these results of this study could be used for the adequate planning of estuary reservoirs in connection with the maximum water use of the watershed.

The drinking water industry faces a growing number of difficultiesin the treatment of groundwater for drinking water production. Groundwater sources are frequently contaminated with nitrates and phosphates due to usage of chemical fertilizer In this study, feasibility of micellar enhanced ultrafiltation (MEUF) was investigated to remediate groundwater contaminated with nitrate and phosphate. Ultrafiltration membrane was cellulose acetate with molecular weight cut off (MWCO) 10,000 and celtyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) was used to form pollutant-micelle complex with nitrate and phosphate. The results show that nitrate and phosphate rejections are satisfactory. The removal efficiency of nitrate and phosphate show 80% and 84% in single pollutant system, respectively with 3 molar ratio of CPC to pollutants. In the multi-pollutant systems, the removalefficiency increased to 90 % and 89 % for nitrate and phosphate, respectively, The presence of nitrate in the solutions did not affect the removal of phosphate and that of phosphate did not affect the removal of nitrate. The concentration of CPC in the permeate and removal efficiency of CPC was a function of the concentration of CPC in the feed solutions.
