Theoretical analysis of stress-strain behavior of multi-layer RC beams under flexure

  • In this study, obtaining theoretical stress-strain curves and determining the parameters defining the equivalent rectangular stress block were aimed for 3 and 4-layered rectangular Reinforced Concrete (RC) cross-sections subjected to flexure. For these aims, the analytical stress-strain model proposed by Hognestad was chosen for the concrete grades (20 MPa≤fck≤60 MPa) used in this study. The tensile strength of the concrete was neglected and the thickness of the concrete layers in the compression zone of the concrete cross-section was taken as equal. In addition, while concrete strength was kept constant within each layer, concrete strengths belonging to separate layers were increased from the neutral axis towards the outer face of the compression zone of the concrete cross-section. After the equivalent rectangular stress block parameters were determined by numerical iterations, variations of these parameters depending on concrete strength in layers and layer numbers were obtained. Finally, some analytical equations have been proposed to predict the equivalent stress block parameters for the 3 and 4-layered RC cross-sections and validities of these proposed equations were shown by different metrics in this study.

The Study of Modified van der Waals Interactions on Free Vibration of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Multi-elastic Beam Model (다중 탄성 빔 모델을 사용한 다중벽 탄소 나노튜브의 자유 진동에 미치는 수정된 반데르발스 상호작용에 대한 연구)

  • Resonant frequencies and the associated vibrational modes of multiwall carbon nanotubes are studied in this paper. The analysis is based on a multiple-elastic beam model, considering intertube radial displacements and the related internal degrees of freedom. Especially, van der Waals interaction is modified considering both all interaction between each layers in multi-wall carbon nanotubes and curvature effect. The results show that modified van der Waals interaction could significantly affect the natural frequencies of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In particular, non-coaxial intertube resonance will be excited at the higher resonant frequencies of multiwall carbon nanotubes.

Field Emission characteristics of Multi-layered Diamond-Like carbon films (다층구조 유사다이아몬드 박막의 전계방출 특성연구)

  • We have studied the field emission characteristics of multi-layered diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films deposited by vertical electrodes type plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition with CH$_4$ and H$_2$ mixture. We deposited a thin layer of DLC on the p$^{+}$-Si substrate and then turned off plasma before another deposition of a new DLC layer. The thickness and the number of DLC layers are varied. The emission characteristics of multi-layered DLC films were compared with conventional one. The multi-layered DLC film shows higher emission current than conventional one.e.

  • Since the wall thickness can be up to 6" or greater, welds must be made in many layers, each layer containing several passes. However, the welding time for the conventional welding processes such as SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding) can be required many hours. The aim of this paper is to develop a high speed welding system with multi-torch and laser vision sensor for increasing the production speed on the line and to remove the need for the operator so that the system can run automatically for the complete multi-torch multi-layer weld. It was shown that the developed laser vision sensor and analysis of arc blow for multi-torch were effective for multi-pass seam tracking and stable arc. A new automated multi-torch welding systems for thick wall applications has been proved in several production lines.

  • Recently, the application of viscoelastic material in the field of vibration isolation has gradually increased due to its achievement in structural damping capacity, and many of the theoretical and experimental study has been carried out. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of the visoelastically supported cantilever beam, of which govering equation is based on the Bernoulli- Euler equation, is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Expression for stiffness of multi-layered viscoelastic materal has been developed using variables such as frequency and number of layers, and further, based on this expression, damping characteristic of the beam is investigated with experimental verification.

  • Wire brushing, which is a typical surface preparation method for roll bonding, has recently been highlighted as a potentially effective method for surface nanocrystallization. In the present study, the microstructure evolution and hardness of the wire-brushed surface and roll-bonded interface of a 1050 aluminum sheet were investigated. Wire brushing formed protruded layers with a nanocrystalline structure and extremely high surface hardness. After roll bonding, the protruded layers remained as hard layers at the interface. Due to their hardness and brittleness the interface hard layers, can affect the interface bonding properties and also play an important role determining the mechanical properties of multi-layered clad sheets.

  • Simplification of the buffer architecture in the fabrication of coated conductors is required because the deposition of multi-layers leads to a longer production time and a higher cost of coated conductors. In this study, a single layered buffer deposition of $CeO_2$ for low cost coated conductors has been tried using thermal evaporation technique. l00nm-thick $CeO_2$ layers deposited by thermal evaporation were found to act as a diffusion layer. $0.4{\mu}m$-thick SmBCO superconducting layers were deposited by thermal co-evaporation on the $CeO_2$ buffered Ni-W substrate. Critical current of $55.4 A/cm^2$ was obtained for the SmBCO coated conductors.

Failure and Phase Transformation Mechanism of Multi-Layered Nitride Coating for Liquid Metal Injection Casting Mold

  • Ti-Al-Si target and Cr-Si target are sputtered alternately to develop a multi-layered nitride coating on a steel mold to improve die-casting lifetime. Prior to the multi-layer deposition, a CrN layer is developed as a buffer layer on the mold to suppress the diffusion of reactive elements and enhance the cohesive strength of the multi-layer deposition. Approximately 50 nm CrSiN and TiAlSiN layers are deposited layer by layer, and form about three ㎛-thickness of multi-layered coating. From the observation of the uncoated and coated steel molds after the acceleration experiment of liquid metal injection casting, the uncoated mold is severely eroded by the adhesion of molten metallic glass. On the other hand, the multi-layer coating on the mold prevents element diffusion from the metallic glass and mold erosion during the experiment. The multi-layer structure of the coating transforms the nano-composite structured coating during the acceleration test. Since the nano-composite structure disrupts element diffusion to molten metallic glass, despite microstructure changes, the coating is not eroded by the 1,050 ℃ molten metallic glass.

Development of an Algorithm for Automatic Finding the Sick or the Dead Layers in the Multi-tier Layer Battery (고단 직립식 산란계 케이지내의 병계 및 폐사계의 유무를 자동 판정하기 위한 영상처리알고리즘 개발)

  • The objectives of this study were to develop an image processing algorithm for finding the sick or the dead layers(SDL) rearing in the multi-tier layer battery, which is a core technology of remote monitoring systems for layers, and to test the performance of algorithm developed in the experimental poultry housing. Based on the literature study and experiment, the standing up of layer was set as a criterion for judging layers whether sick or dead. Then, by the criterion set, an algorithm was developed. The image processing algorithm developed was tested how well it could and SDL at the experimental poultry housing. Test results showed that its monitoring correctness of layers standing up in the cages having all healthy layers was $92\%$, and $96\%$ in the cages having SDL. Therefore, it would be concluded that the image processing algorithm developed in this study was well suited to the purpose of development.

  • The well-known back-propagation algorithm for multi-layered neural network has successfully been applied to pattern c1assification problems with remarkable flexibility. Recently. the multi-layered neural network is used as a powerful data mining tool. Nevertheless, in many cases with complex boundary of classification, the successful learning is not guaranteed and the problems of long learning time and local minimum attraction restrict the field application. In this paper, an Improved learning procedure of multi-layered neural network is proposed. The procedure is based on the generalized delta rule but it is particular in the point that the architecture of network is not fixed but enlarged during learning. That is, the number of hidden nodes or hidden layers are increased to help finding the classification boundary and such procedure is controlled by entropy evaluation. The learning speed and the pattern classification performance are analyzed and compared with the back-propagation algorithm.
