  • A muffler design in the exhaust system is critical to provide fur low noise in shipboard spaces. In an attempt to effectively design the low noise muffler, it Is important to evaluate the performance of the muffler considering not only the noise, but also pressure drop as well. For this purpose, a test system of large exhaust mufflers fur ship propulsion systems was designed based on ISO 7235. The substitution test fur determining both the insertion loss and pressure drop of mufflers was carried out. A ship exhaust muffler is considered as a test example and the insertion loss and pressure drop were obtained.

  • Passive type mufflers installed on every car haute inherent problem of lowering engine power and fuel efficiency caused by backpressure which is byproduct of complex internal structure. Recent improvements like installing a calve to change exhaust gas path depending on power requirement and rpm have only marginally improved performance. Tremendous amount of recent research works on active exhaust noise control have failed to commercialize because of numerous physical and economical reasons. In this paper, a unique seal-active muffler using difference of transmission paths is presented. In this system exhaust pipe is divided into two and joined again downstream. Exhaust noise is reduced by destructive interference when two-divided noise join again with transmission paths'difference which is half of the wavelength of a main noise frequency. One divided path has a sliding mechanism to change length thereby transmission path length difference is adjusted to entwine rpm change. The proposed system has minimal backpressure and does not need a secondary sound source like a speaker so it can overcome many problems of failed active noise control methods. We have verified proposed system's superior performance by simulation and comparison experiment with passive mufflers.

  • In this paper, implementation of active mufflers using multiple channel adaptive IIR filter is presented. Usually, recursive LMS(RLMS) algorithms for adaptive IIR filters are highly efficient than filtered-X LMS(FXLMS) algorithms, when the order of both algorithms are the same. However, RLMS algorithms usually diverge before the algorithms arenot yet converged. So, the prefilters are presented to improve the stability by pulling the poles of feedback control transfer function in the beginning of active noise control and returning the original poles after the filters converge. The engine noises of diesel engine automobiles and gasoline engine automobiles are analyzed and the mathematical model of an active muffler is derived. Computer simulations and experiments are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed systems.

  • Cylindrical chamber mufflers with an extended inlet or outlet are extensively used in many application fields to reduce the propagated noise in ducts. The basic attenuation effectivencess in the low frequency region can be explained by the reactive wave action inside the expansion chamber associated with the geometric configurations of the inlet and outlet locations, and the area expansion of the jacket. In this study, an acoustic analysis is carried out for a concentric extended pipe inserted into a simple expansion chamber. An algebraic equation is derived by using the eigenfuction expansion and orthogonality principle in which the acoustic pressures and particle velocities defined on each subdivided surface are expressed by the separable coordinates. By using the proposed analytical method, transmission losses are predicted for several configurations of the concentric extended systems and they agree very well with experimental results.

  • The transmission loss(TL) has been widely used as the acoustic performance index of industrial mufflers. Industrial mufflers usually consist of several partitions with perforated plate. In this study, firstly, the computational model for a typical industrial muffler was performed and validated by comparing with the experimental results. Secondly, the effects of the porosity of the perforated plates on the acoustical TL were investigated and the database of the tendencies were set up. Finally, on the basis of these tendencies, the modified muffler with better TL than conventional one could be suggested.

  • The specific noise level of 18 rotary compressor mufflers were measured and these data were analyzed by the Taguchi robust design method and the neural network. The optimal design value obtained by the neural network generally showed good agreement with that by the Taguchi method. The effects of eight important design variables on the specific noise level were discussed.
