  • The heavy equipment such as tracter has been studied to improve rather the performance of engine than comfort. The mufflers of tracters have various specifications according to their uses. The exact analysis of various mufflers is needed to reduce the level of exhaust moise, a major noise source of engine, to improve the ride quality of tracter. In this study, a software based on Green's function is developed to predict the performance of sound transmission loss for a muffler according to the locations of inlet/outlet pipes. The locations of inlet and outlet pipes can be fixed at different position individually. The conventional muffler has the locations of inlet/outlet pipes on the direction of longitudinal axes. On other hand, the inlet and outlet pipes may be located at the circumferential surface of a test muffler such as one of tracter. The software is verified by analysis and experiment on current muffler of tracter and the improvement technique is proposed to reduce the level of exhaust noise.

  • The common practice to reduce the compressor noise is installing a muffler. The noise reduction performance of the muffler is the most critical one for the total noise characteristics of the compressor. In this paper, a simple impedance approach using the concept of transmissibility is employed for the acoustic analysis of the muffler, It is known that transmissibility is directly related to insertion loss, and thus transmissibility can Indicate the correct performance of the muffler. The analysis result is supported by a Finite Element Model. In addition, some experiments conducted also show that the transmissibility is mildly related to the measured sound pressure outside the compressor.

  • Current Optical Disk drive is dominating high share gradually in information storage device market through development of great skill. These technologies can achieve not only improvement of transmission speed but also elevation of recording/reproduction technology. However, these present state cause not only the increase of vibration in structural viewpoint but also problem of serious noise while the ODD becomes high speed/high performance. Specially, air-born noise is being bigger than structural-born noise as disk rotation speed increases gradually. The object of this research is that reduce the air-born noise in optical disk drive by reducing a quantity of flow by using a miniaturized muffler. The micro muffler is a miniaturized muffler. The muffler is used widely by solution to reduce air-born noise which is generated by flow. According to frequency band of the noise source, it can be applied by muffler of various forms. In this research, we examined the noise characteristics of the micro muffler and applied it by noise reduction solution of the ODD. It could get an excellent noise reduction in high frequency band by using the micro muffler than the opened case through the decrease of an inner flow. But it could not get a noise reduction in low frequency band through the decrease of an inner flow.

  • As high performance and high speed have been accomplished by technology of optical disk drive. optical disk drives have gradually high percentage of the market share in market of storage devices. This technology helps to improve the quality of record/reproduction. However, simultaneously it causes various problems in the structural aspect and increases noise largely. Especially at high speed, dominant noise is more influenced by fluid noise than by structure-borne noise. The purpose of this study is that reduce the air-born noise in optical disk drive as it decreases a quantity of flow by using a micro muffler. The micro muffler is a miniaturized muffler. The muffler is used widely by solution to reduce air-borne noise which is generated by flow. According to frequency band of the noise source, it can be applied by muffler of various forms. • The rotary compressor is widely used for the air conditioner because it is efficient and compact. In recent, the need for silent compressors is much stronger than the past. The new type muffler was invented to reduce noise level and to improve sound quality. The new type muffler that has two side discharge holes represents much lower overall noise level, especially noise levels around 1KHz than the old type one that has one center discharge hole in acoustic spectra and dynamic pressure spectra. The noise reduction effects of the new type muffler were verified by noise tests for rotary compressors and air conditioners.

  • Internal combustion engine is the main source of environmental pollutants and therefore advanced technology is required to reduce harmful elements from the exhaust gases all over the world. Especially, when the exhaust gas is released front the automotive muffler, exhaust noise has many bad influence on the surrounding environment. In order to reduce the exhaust noise, it is necessary that automotive muffler must be designed for best exhaust efficiency. The sound insulation room was installed for the analysis of an acoustics characteristics of the noise from automotive muffler, in this study. Exhaust gas noise, noise distribution characteristics, pressure and temperature of exhaust gas were investigated with the change of annulus temperature of air cooled annulus automotive muffler and cooled annulus automotive muffler. The following results were obtained with this study. From the frequency analysis of automotive muffler, high noise distribution was observed in the range $100{\sim}2000Hz$. It means that the noise in this range has an dominate influence for the overall noise. Noise reduction of automotive muffler was affected by the temperature of annulus. It is caused the result that the high temperature and pressure of exhaust gas are changed lower by the drop of annulus temperature. The tendencies of noise, the temperature and pressure of exhaust gas are similar to the performance curve of engine. Exhaust gas pressure is determined by the r.p.m. of engine and affected by the cooling performance of automotive muffler.

  • To reduce backpressure for improving engine power in exhaust system, a large difference of pressure is required, but this is in conflict with the requirement for reducing exhaust noise that needs a small pressure difference. In this paper, the controllable muffler designed by simplifying the structure of the exhaust system has a low backpressure and a proper sound specification to the rotation of engine. The exhaust system in conventional studies has been designed to have maximum noise reduction over the whole driving domain, but due to its complex structure this led to increased backpressure. If the muffler is designed according to the driving frequency, which is a dominant noise component in stationary driving speed, the backpressure is reduced due to the simplified structure of the muffler. Furthermore, a multi-mode muffler able to change structure with varied driving speed was designed.

  • We usually divide the noise of exhaust system into pulsation noise and flow noise. Pulsation noise is the shock wave to occur when the burning gas of low pressure emits and include harmonic having basic frequency as the exhaust cycle of engine. Flow noise is the noise that is produced when gas flow emits into the atmosphere through the pipe and has the character of frequency like pink noise which has the high level of high frequency component. A muffler is divided into reflective type and absorptive type. We usually use the muffler compounding the property of them. In this study, it is the case of transfer matrix method that a muffler is compounded to analyze the elements of each section according to sound wave's proceed direction. But we use simple model. So, we use finite element method that takes short time to analyze. Acoustic analysis gives us transfer matrix to use FEA of SYSNOISE and we use STAR-CD for fluid analysis. We made database that is based on analytical results about the muffler of expansion type, extended type, offset type, reverse type, and perforated type and developed the muffler design system to perform work efficiently.

  • The object of this research is limited to the reduction of compression process noise only among the main sources of compressor noise such as motor noise, compression process noise, and valve port flow noise. Thus the research is focused on the wave motion rather than the particle motion of sound wave travels. A muffler is a commonly used device to reduce the compression process noise, generated by the pressure pulsations caused by the cyclic compression process. In this research, the acoustic characteristics of the muffler are analyzed by using the normal gradient integral equation proposed by Wu and Wan. Moreover, a commercial code SYSNOISE developed by indirect variational boundary integral equation is also used to validate the results. For the noise reduction, the topology optimization technique using a genetic algorithm is used. The number, size and position of the muffler holes are considered as design variables. Compared with original design, the optimized design has very improved acoustic characteristics. Both numerical and experimental analyses are used to evaluate new design.

  • An exhaust muffler is one of the simple and effective means to meet the demand for a quiet vehicle, and it deserves a close attention to effectively reduce the engine noise. The transfer function technique is one of the tools that have been used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust muffler. In this paper we obtained a transfer function using the forward-going and backward-going components of sound pressure in the exhaust muffler, which is compatible wiht lattice filter algorithm. This form of transfer function is obtained for the basic elements of a muffler, such as uniform tube, open termin- ation, closed termination, anechoic termination, expansion, contraction, extended-tube resonator, hole, Helmholtz resonator, and concentric hole-cavity resonator. The results are combined to produce the transfer function of various types of mufflers. With this transfer function we calculate the transmission and insertion losses of mufflers, and examined the effects of various design parameters. Comparisons were made between the calculation and experimental results, which showed a good agreement, and we conclude that the transfer function of lattice form can be used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust mufflers.
