Red mud is a waste material formed during the production of alumina when the bauxite ore is subjected to caustic leaching. It is a brick-red colored highly alkaline (pH 10-12) sludge containing mostly oxides of iron, aluminum, titanium, and silica. Red mud, due to its high aluminum, iron, and calcium contents, has been suggested as a cheap adsorbent for removal of toxic metals (e.g., As, Cr, Pb, Cd) as well as for water or wastewater treatment. The basic advantage of red mud is its versatility in application. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of red mud on stabilization and fixation of heavy metals (such as Pb, Cu, C $r^{6+}$, Cd, Zn) contained in the Al-coating sludge and soil. The results showed that the concentration of heavy metals leached from the treated sludge and soil was low, meeting the regulatory permit level.
Mineral compositions of 69 southeastern Yellow Sea surface sediments collected at the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) cruise in 2010, were determined using the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Southeastern Yellow Sea surface sediments are composed of major minerals (quartz 49.1%, plagioclase 13.0% and alkali feldspar 9.3%), clay minerals, calcite, and aragonite. Illite (9.4%) is the most abundant clay mineral, chlorite (4.6%) is the second, and kaolinite (0.8%) is few. Quartz and alkali feldspar contents are high in coarse-grained sediments, whereas amphibole and clay mineral contents are high in fine-grained sediments. Quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, chlorite, and kaolinite contents are higher, and illite content is lower in mud zone 1 corresponding to south margin of Central Yellow Sea Mud than in mud zone 2, a part of Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud. Difference of mineral composition between two mud zone suggests that source of fine sediment may be different in two mud zone and Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud might be largely supplied from the Keum and Youngsan rivers in southern part of the west coast in the Korean Peninsula.
COD and sulphide contents in the superficial mud in three oyster farms, one near Gajo-do in Chinhae Bay, the second near Eup-do in Koseong Bay and the third near Eogu in Keoje Bay, around the Chungmu area have been monthly determined for seven months from May through November in 1978. Bottom water was also checked for chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, COD and sulphide. In general, large amounts of COD and sulphide in the superficial mud were found in the summer season, COD was 38.1 mg/g dry mud in the farm near Gajo-do, 32.3 mg/g near Eup-do and 25.1 mg/g in Eogu farm and sulphide was 0.313 mg/g dry mud, 0.517 mg/g and 0.132 mg/g respectively. COD and sulphide contents in the farms near Gajo-do and Eup-do were a little over the upper level of the eutrophic range, that is, 30 mg/g dry mud in COD and 0.3 mg/g dry mud in sulphide. It shows that the above two oyster farms were already eutrophicated. However, among three oyster farms no clear difference in bottom water was found.

In this study, sediment cores from unvegetated tidal flats in the Hampyeong Bay (west coastal wetland) and Dongdae Bay (south coastal wetland) were sampled, the blue carbon stock in the sediments was calculated, and the characteristics of the blue carbon stock were analyzed based on particle size of the sediments. The sediments in the Hampyeong Bay tidal flat had large particle size and low mud content, and the Dongdae bay tidal flat had small particle size and high mud content. The organic carbon content and blue carbon stock in the sediments were higher in the Dongdae tidal flat than in the Hampyeong Bay tidal flat. As a result of the regression function, in both the Hampyeong Bay and Dongdae Bay tidal flats, the sediments had the smaller particle size and higher mud contents the higher the organic carbon content and blue carbon stock. The sediments with smaller particle size had the larger specific surface area, so were feasible to adsorb and store more organic matters.
Environmental monitoring was conducted to identify the characteristics and patterns of sedimentary environments of tidal flats in 12 areas on the west coast of Korea. The habitat of the mud shrimp Upogebia major contained higher organic and mud contents compared to the habitat of the manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. In particular, the mud content increased from 84.38% to 89.18% in the Seongam-4 area, where the mud shrimp and manila clam coexist, and the mean grain size exhibited a finer particle size, from 5.48 Φ to 5.80 Φ. In the mud shrimp habitat, the sediment mud content was > 60% and the mean grain size was > 5 Φ. Additionally, the mud shrimp only inhabited open coast tidal flat areas. The management of shellfish aquaculture farms by physical methods should be continued based on comparison of the sedimentary environments in the Boryeong and Seongam areas in response to the damage to the mud shrimp habitat.

This paper aims to recycle red mud from a byproduct in the alumina industry as an alternative raw material for depleted natural resources. In order to apply red mud as a ceramic material, red mud ceramics were prepared according to mixing and temperature in a laboratory environment. Compared with KS L 4201 in terms of compression ratios and absorptions, it is found that two kinds of conditions for one type and three conditions for two types meet the standard. When red mud is used as a clay brick raw material, the substitution ratio of red mud is 10% or less, and the firing temperature is considered to be appropriate at $1200^{\circ}C$. In order to apply red mud to clay brick raw material in actual field, various samples and firing temperature should be considered in the future.
A successful oil well drilling depends largely on a good mud Program. During drilling, mud provides sufficient hydrostatic pressure, removes drill cuttings and cools drill bits. Mud additives are always required to provide sufficient hydrostatic pressure to ensure borehole stability. Barium Sulphate ($BaSO_4$) also known as barite is the prevalent weighting material but there is needed to develop local materials to augment the use of Barite. The present search is concerned on the early Carboniferous succession exposed in Um Bogma Formation, west central Sinai, Egypt as a new weighting agent in drilling fluids. The increases in the cost of drilling fluids and a shortage of using barite have introduced the locale dolomite as alternative weighting materials. The rheological properties of mud drilling samples weighted by local dolomite samples are being examined and investigated to know its potential to be used as a weighting material in drilling mud. Two mud samples were prepared which comprised of fresh water, caustic soda, bentonite and the weighting material. The weighting materials are added to achieve the required density. The first sample: Water-based mud with commercial barite of density between 10.00 lb/gm and 18.00 lb/gm. The second sample: Water-based mud with dolomite of density between 10.00 lb/gm and 18.00 lb/gm. These samples were analyzed and the density, rheological properties, aging of barite and dolomite and solid contents were investigated. At 10.00 lb/gm, the yield point of dolomite was $20.00lb/100ft^2$ and barite $22.00lb/100ft^2$ while the 10 second gel strength of dolomite was $30.00lb/100ft^2$ and $22.00lb/100ft^2$ for barite. Similarly, little difference was observed in plastic and apparent viscosities. At 10.00 lb/gm, the plastic and apparent viscosities of dolomite were 8.00 cp and 20.00 cp while barite was 8.00 cp and 24.00 cp. The result show that dolomite mud sample gave a little higher yield point and gel strength than barite mud sample. Therefore, dolomite has the potential to be used as weighting material in drilling mud in place of barite thereby enhancing the local content initiative of the government. When dolomite is sourced locally and used it will reduce overall mud and drilling costs.
On farm demonstration of urea treatment (5 kg urea dissolved in 60 litre water/100kg) of straw was performed at 6 different sites and treated straw was stored by three different methods i.e., plastic covered, mud plastered and existing farmers technique (mud plastered on the top and open from sides) to determine the best storage method in field. Untreated and treated samples were taken after 5 week storage period and subjected to crude protein, crude fibre and cell wall constituents analysis. In situ dry matter digestibility of straw was measured by nylon bag technique in buffalo bulls. Crude protein content increased by 100 to 153 percent in treated straw stored by different methods. Maximum increase in crude protein of treated straw was noticed in mud plastered method. Urea treatment of straw resulted in significant decrease in crude fibre contents in all the storage methods. Treatment of straw enhanced the in situ digestibility by 25-49 percent and maximum digestibility (53%) was found in mud plastered storage method. It was concluded that the mud plastered storage method for urea treated straw was found to be the best at farm level.

The artificial aggregates (AAs) composing of 2 wastes, coal bottom ash and dredged soil (7 : 3, weight ratio) were fabricated as a function of red mud contents,0~30 wt% using direct sintering method at $1050{\sim}1250^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, and those physical properties were evaluated. Especially, in order to analyze the red mud addition effect on the bloating phenomenon of AAs manufactured, the specific gravity and water absorption were measured and studied linked with the microstructural observation results. The lightening of AAs was enhanced due to increased bloating with increasing temperature and red mud contents. The AAS sintered at $1050{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ showed well-developed black-coring structure, but for the specimens containing red mud sintered over $1200^{\circ}C$ generated excessive liquid and gas caused by reduction of $Fe_2O_3$, thus the black-coring part was gradually burst open out of shell of AAs. Particularly, all specimens containing 30 wt% red mud was burst up when sintered over $1100^{\circ}C$. The AAs containing no red mud sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ had a specific gravity of about 1.2 and those containing 20 wt% had below 1.0 which are characters of lightweight aggregate.
In this study, we examined the physical properties of cement mortar by replacing a part of the amount of fine aggregate in moist mud flat. I analyzed the possibilities of using bricks. Flow measurement results show that the flow value increases as the mixing ratio of cement and fine aggregate increases and the flow value decreased as the replacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased. Chloride contents were also found to decrease with decreasing substitution rate of moist mud flats. As a result of the compressive strength measurement, the compressive strength increased in inverse proportion as the displacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased in most mixing ratio. As a result of tensile strength measurement, the tendency was similar to compressive strength and the intensity increased as the replacement ratio of moist mud flats decreased.
