Resistance to Macrolide, Lincosamide and Streptogramin Antibiotics in Staphylococci Isolated in Istanbul, Turkey

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and genetic mechanisms of erythromycin resistance in staphylococci. A total of 102 erythromycin resistant non-duplicate clinical isolates of staphylococci [78. coagulase negative stapylococci (CNS), 24 Staphylococcus aureus] were collected between October 2003 and August 2004 in Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in Turkey. The majority of the isolates were from blood and urine specimens. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined by the agar dilution procedure and the resistance phenotypes by the double disk induction test. A multiplex PCR was performed, using primers specific for erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), and msrA genes.. Among the 78 CNS isolates, 57.8% expressed the $MLS_{B}-constitutive$, 20.6% the $MLS_{B}-inducible$, and 21.6% the $MS_B$ phenotypes. By PCR, 78.2% of these isolates harbored the erm(C) gene, 8.9% erm(A), 6.4% erm(B), and 11.5% msrA genes. In S. aureus, the constitutive $MLS_B$ (58.3 %) was more common than the inducible phenotype (20.8%). erm(A) was detected in 50% and erm(C) in 62.5% of the isolates, while 37.5% contained both erm(A) and erm(C). erm(C)-associated macrolide resistance was the most prevalent in CNS, while ermC) and erm(A, C) was the most prevalent in S. aureus.

  • This paper proposed a distributed web environment for developing robot services using a 4-legged robot and MSRS. The proposed development environment of the robot services enabled a high-level complicated robot application to operate in a distributed web environment by implementing robot functions as services which can be run on network nodes using Microsoft MSRS. The environment has been also implemented using a 4-legged robot, Genibo as a robot platform. In experiment, we showed the developed robot services are enable to be executed and configured dynamically and support a remote monitoring in a distributed web environment. Finally the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed environment has been verified by creating a robot application using the developed robot services in Visual Program Language which helps student to create a complicated robot application system easily.

Residual Stress Redistribution on Welds of Nuclear Component by Mechanical Stress Relieving Methods (기계적 응력이완 방법에 의한 원전기기 용접부의 잔류응력 재분포)

  • Residual stresses, which can be produced during the welding process, play an important role in an industrial field. Welding residual stresses are exerting negative effect on the fatigue behavior and integrity of structure. In this study, as a result of the thermal elasto-plastic finite element analysis for the welds of a nuclear component, the residual stress distributions are estimated for as-welded condition. Also, finite element techniques are developed to simulate the relaxation of the residual stresses according to the various mechanical stress relieving(MSR) loads such as hydrostatic pressure loading, tensile pipe-end loading, and mechanical stress improvement process(MSIP) loading. Finally, the results of residual stress redistributions for various loading conditions are compared and reviewed qualitatively and quantitatively to find an optimum loading condition.

  • Human actions can be recognized from depth sequences. In the proposed algorithm, we initially construct depth, motion maps (DMM) by projecting each depth frame onto three orthogonal Cartesian planes and add the motion energy for each view. The body part of the action (BPoA) is calculated by using bounding box with an optimal window size based on maximum spatial and temporal changes for each DMM. Furthermore, feature vector is constructed by using BPoA for each human action view. In this paper, we employed an ensemble based learning approach called Rotation Forest to recognize different actions Experimental results show that proposed method has significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on Microsoft Research (MSR) Action 3D and MSR DailyActivity3D dataset.

The Controversy Surrounding the Use of Underwater Drones and the Position of Korea (수중드론 운용에 관한 국제법적 논란과 대한민국의 전략)

  • On 15 December 2015, China seized an underwater drone belonging to the U.S. in the South China Sea. The underwater drone was then about to be retrieved by the Bowditch, a U.S. naval ship.Although China returned the underwater drone to the U.S. on 20 December 2016, the incident resulted in the considerable controversy involving the use of underwater drones. The reason for this is that the seizure of the underwater drone happened in the exclusive economic zone (hereafter referred to as "EEZ") of the Philippines. Part XIII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (hereafter referred to as "UNCLOS") governs the matters of marine scientific research (hereafter referred to as "MSR"). If a State intends to use an underwater drone in the EEZ of another coastal State for the purpose of MSR, the former has to obtain the consent of the latter in accordance with relevant provisions included in Part XIII of the UNCLOS. However, it is not obvious whether the consent of a coastal State should be required to launch an underwater drone in the EEZ of the State for the purpose of hydrographic surveying or military surveying. Maritime powers such as the U.S. regard hydrographic surveying or military surveying as part of "other internationally lawful uses of the sea related to these freedoms, such as those associated with the operation of ships, aircraft and submarine cables and pipelines" found in Article 58(1) of the UNCLOS, or part of the freedom of the high seas. This interpretation is not incompatible with the implications that the UNCLOS has. Nevertheless, Korea cannot accept this kind of interpretation that is supported by maritime powers. The freedom of hydrographic surveying or military surveying could imply that the EEZ of Korea would be full of underwater drones launched by China, Japan or even Russia. Hence, Korea should claim that the data collected for the purpose of MSR cannot be distinguished from that collected for the purpose of hydrographic surveying or military surveying. This means that hydrographic surveying or military surveying without the consent of a coastal State in the EEZ of the State should not be permitted.

Space Surveillance Radar Observation Analysis: One-Year Tracking and Orbit Determination Results of KITSAT-1, "우리별 1호"

  • The Korean Institute of Technology Satellite (KITSAT-1) is the first satellite developed by the Satellite Technology Research Center and the University of Surrey. KITSAT-1 is orbiting the Earth's orbit as space debris with a 1,320 km altitude after the planned mission. Due to its relatively small size and altitude, tracking the KITSAT-1 was a difficult task. In this research, we analyzed the tracking results of KITSAT-1 for one year using the Midland Space Radar (MSR) in Texas and the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) in Alaska operated by LeoLabs, Inc. The tracking results were analyzed on a weekly basis for MSR and PFISR. The observation was conducted by using both stations at an average frequency of 10 times per week. The overall corrected range measurements for MSR and PFISR by LeoLabs were under 50 m and 25 m, respectively. The ionospheric delay, the dominant error source, was confirmed with the International Reference of Ionosphere-16 model and Global Navigation Satellite System data. The weekly basis orbit determination results were compared with two-line element data. The comparison results were used to confirm the orbital consistency of the estimated orbits.

Excluding molten fluoride salt from nuclear graphite by SiC/glassy carbon composite coating

  • SiC coating and SiC/glassy carbon composite coating were prepared on IG-110 nuclear graphite (Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd., Japan) to strengthen its inertness to molten fluoride salt used in molten salt reactor (MSR). Two kinds of modified graphite were obtained and correspondingly named as IG-110-1 and IG-110-2, which referred to modified IG-110 with a single SiC coating and a SiC/glassy carbon composite coating, respectively. Both structure and property of modified graphite were carefully researched and contrasted with virgin IG-110. Results indicated that modified graphite presented better comprehensive properties such as more compact structure and higher resistance to molten salt infiltration. With the protection of coatings, the infiltration amounts of fluoride salt into modified graphite were much less than that into virgin IG-110 at the same circumstance. Especially, the infiltration amount of fluoride salt into IG-110-2 under 5 atm was merely 0.26 wt%, which was much less than that into virgin IG-110 under 1.5 atm (13.5 wt%) and the critical index proposed for nuclear graphite used in MSR (0.5 wt%). The SiC/glassy carbon composite coating gave rise to highest resistance to molten salt infiltration into IG-110-2, and thus demonstrated it could be a promising protective coating for nuclear graphite used in MSR.

Performance Analysis on the Multi Stage Reheater Regeneration Cycle for Ocean Geothermal Power Generation (해양지열발전용 다단재열재생사이클 성능해석)

  • In order to study the improvement of the multi stage regeneration cycles, muti-stage processes were applied to the cycles, respectively or together. The kinds of the cycles are multi stage reheater cycle (MS) and multi stage reheater regeneration cycle (MSR). Working fluid used was R134a and R245fa. Temperature of the heat source was $65^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, and $85^{\circ}C$, and temperature of the heat sink was $5^{\circ}C$. Optimization simulation was conducted for improving the gross power and efficiency with multi stage reheater regeneration cycle for ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) with changing of a heat source, kind of the working fluid, and type of the cycle. Performance analysis of the various components was simulated by using the Aspen HYSYS for analysis of the thermodynamic cycle. R245fa shows better performance than R134a. This paper showed the most suitable working fluid with changing of a heat source and the kinds of working cycle. Compared to each other, MS showed better performance at gross power and MSR showed higher cycle efficiency.

Genetic Parameters for Traits in Performance and Progeny Tests and Their Genetic Relationships in Japanese Black Cattle

  • Genetic parameters for performance traits on 409 bulls and growth and carcass traits on 591 of their steer progeny were estimated in Japanese Black cattle with Gibbs sampling. Traits of bulls included body weight at the start (BWS) and finish (BWF) of test, daily gain (DG), concentrate, roughage and TDN intake, and TDN conversion ratio. Progeny traits were BWS, BWF, DG, rib eye area, marbling score (MSR), dressing percentage and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT). In bulls, heritabilities were high for BWS (0.50) and BWF (0.63) and moderate for concentrate (0.48) and TDN intake (0.45), while in progeny, the heritability for all the studied traits was moderate to high (ranging from 0.30 to 0.73), highlighting the potential for genetic improvement of these traits. Genetic correlations between TDN intake and growth traits (BWS, BWF and DG) in bulls were highly positive (ranging from 0.77 to 0.94). The weak but negative genetic correlation (-0.20) between MSR and SFT in progeny indicated that improvement of beef marbling without increasing subcutaneous fat deposition could be possible. The estimated genetic correlations of roughage intake of bulls with body weights (BWS and BWF) and MSR of their progeny were moderate (ranging from 0.35 to 0.52). On the basis of the selection for bulls, growth traits and TDN intake correlated positively with SFT (ranging from 0.43 to 0.53) of their progeny, suggesting the necessity of controlling the increase of SFT in selection programs.

Cognitive Contrast Enhancement of Image Using Adaptive Parameter Based on Non-Linear Masking (비선형 마스킹 기법 기반의 적응적 파라미터를 이용한 영상의 인지적 대비 향상)

  • This paper proposes a cognitive contrast enhancement algorithm based on the non-linear masking to advance low cognitive contrast in dark regions of images. In order to improve brightness in dark regions of an image, we propose a new contrast enhancement algorithm based on the non-linear masking using regional adaptive parameters of an image. For performance evaluation of the proposed method, chromaticity and saturation comparison as a quantitative assessment and z-score comparison as a qualitative assessment were executed between test images and their simulated images by SSR, MSR, a conventional non-linear masking and the proposed method, respectively. As a result, the proposed method showed low chromaticity and saturation difference and improved cognitive contrast for the three methods.
