The kinetics of flocculation of heterodisperse suspension like those in water treatment plants and natural water system are usually described by the Smoluchowski equation, which incorporates collision frequency functions for particle collisions by Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation. These collisionfrequeney functions have been based on a rectilinear view of collisions, i.e., one that ignores short-range forces and changes in fluid motion as particles approach one another. In this research, a curvilinear approach, i.e., one that accounts for hydrodynamic forces and particle interaction in the collision of two different size particles is developed. Collision efficiency factors of each mechanism can be calculated by trajectory analysis (fluid shear and differential sedimentation) or the solution of diffusion equation (Brownian motion). The results are presented as a set of corrections to the rectilinear collision frequency functions for each mechanism.
The wear behaviors of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks moving in two different kinematic motion were investigated by conducting repeat pass rotational sliding and linear reciprocal sliding wear tests. Linear reciprocal motion wore more the polyethylene pin than did repeat pass rotational motion for both disk materials. It means that the repeated directional change of contact stresses generates more wear debris in polyethylene. For the linear reciprocal sliding tests, titanium alloy disks were damaged with some scratches after one million cycles but no surface damage was observed on the polyethylene pins. On the other hand, fur the repeat pass rotational sliding tests, all titanium alloy disks were severely abraded on the entire region of sliding track. This phenomenon can be interpreted by that stress fatigue under repeated sliding contact initiated titanium oxide layer wear particles from disk surface, and these hard particles were embedded into polyethylene pin and then they severely abraded the disk surface. From these results it can be concluded that the kinematic motion in pin-on-disk wear tests play a crucial role on the wear behaviors of UHMWPE pins against titanium alloy and stainless steef discs.
Industrial electrostatic precipitation is a very complex process, which involves multiple-way interaction between the electric field, the fluid flow, and the particulate motion. This paper describes a strongly coupled calculation procedure for the rigorous computation of particle dynamics during electrostatic precipitation. The turbulent gas flow and the particle motion under electrostatic forces are calculated by using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package FLUENT linked to a finite-volume solver for the electric field and ion charge. Particle charge is determined from both local electrical conditions and the cell residence time which the particle has experienced through its path. Particle charge density and the particle velocity are averaged in a control volume to use Lagrangian information of the particle motion in calculating the gas and electric fields. The turbulent particulate transport and the effects of particulate space charge on the electrical current flow are investigated. The calculated results for poly-dispersed particles are compared with those for mono-dispersed particles, and significant differences are demonstrated.
Nanofluid is a novel heat transfer fluid prepared by dispersing nanometer-sized solid particles in traditional heat transfer fluid to increase thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance. In this research we have considered the rheological properties of nanofluids made of CuO particles of 10-30nm in length and ethylene glycol in conjunction with the thermal conductivity enhancement. When examined using TEM, individual CuO particles have the shape of prolate spheroid of the aspect ratio of 3 and most of the particles are under aggregated states even after sonication for a prolonged period. From the rheological property it has been found that the volume fraction at the dilute limit is 0.002, which is much smaller than the value based on the shape and size of individual particles due to aggregation of particles. At the semi-dilute regime, the zero shear viscosity follows the Doi-Edwards theory on rodlike particles. The thermal conductivity measurement shows that substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity with respect to particle concentration is attainable only when particle concentration is below the dilute limit.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of particles on the heat transfer characteristics of fluids flowing in a cold water tube. Plastic beads with 3 different sizes were used as flowing particles with cold water. An experimental test section was composed of concentric double tubes having diameters of 25mm for the inner tube and 50mm for the outer tube. The materials for the inner and outer tubes are copper and PVC respectively. It was found that the particles enhanced the heat transfer coefficient by random and vortex motion in the fluid. Hence the heat transfer coefficients for the fluid with 2mm, 5mm and $2{\times}6mm$ particles were $7%{\sim}37%$ higher than the fluid without the particles.

An innovative spiral variable-section capillary model is established for piping critical hydraulic gradient of cohesion-less soils causing water/mud inrush in tunnels. The relationship between the actual winding seepage channel and grain-size distribution, porosity, and permeability is established in the model. Soils are classified into coarse particles and fine particles according to the grain-size distribution. The piping critical hydraulic gradient is obtained by analyzing starting modes of fine particles and solving corresponding moment equilibrium equations. Gravities, drag forces, uplift forces and frictions are analyzed in moment equilibrium equations. The influence of drag force and uplift force on incipient motion is generally expounded based on the mechanical analysis. Two cases are studied with the innovative capillary model. The critical hydraulic gradient of each kind of sandy gravels with a bimodal grain-size-distribution is obtained in case one, and results have a good agreement with previous experimental observations. The relationships between the content of fine particles and the critical hydraulic gradient of seepage failure are analyzed in case two, and the changing tendency of the critical hydraulic gradient is accordant with results of experiments.

Effects of porous wind fences on the wind erosion of particles from a triangular sand pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Flow visualization was carried out to investigate the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the particle size, fence porosity $\varepsilon$ and the height of sand pile. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity $\varepsilon$=30% was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles. With increasing the sand particle diamter, the threshold velocity was also increased. When the height of sand pile is lower than the fence height, threshold velocity is enhanced.

In this paper, we proposed a visualization system with ANN algorithm that traits the motion of particles that move colliding in the water, where we got a great deal of variable information and predicts the distribution of particles according to the flowing of water and the pattern of their precipitation. We adopted ART2 to detect sensitively the collision between particles in this visualzation. Various particles and their mutual collision influencing the force such as buoyancy force, gravitational force, and the pattern of precipitation are considered in this system. Flowing particles whose motion is changed with the environment can be visualized in the system presented here as they are in real water.
In this study, an optical imaging method was developed for the measurements of the sizes and velocities of droplets in sprays. Double-exposure single-frame spray images were captured by the imaging system. An image processing program was developed for the measurements of the sizes and positions of individual particles including separation of the overlapped particles and particle tracking and pairing at two time instants. To recognize and separate overlapping particles, the morphological method based on watershed segmentation as well as separation using the perimeter and convex hull of image was used consecutively. Better results in separation were obtained by utilization of both methods especially for the multiple or heavily-overlapped particles. The match probability method was adopted for particle tracking and pairing after identifying the positions of individual particles and it produced good matching results even for large particles like droplets in sprays. Therefore, the developed optical imaging method could provide a reliable way of analyzing the motion and size distribution of droplets produced by various sprays and atomization devices.

The mixing length theory is extended to close the momentum queations for two-phase turbulent flow at a first-order closure level. It is assumed that the mass fraction of the particles is of the order of unity, that the particle size is so small that the particles are fully suspended is the primary fluid, and that the relaxation time scale of the particles is of the same order as the time scale of the energy containing eddies so that the suspended particles are responsive to the fluctuating turbulent field. The bulk motion of the particles is treated as a secondary fluid with its own coefficient of momentum transport. The proposed closure is uniformly destributed acress the pipe section. Predicted velocity profiles and the friction factors are in good agreement with avaiable experimental data.
