Motion Capture of the Human Body Using Multiple Depth Sensors

  • The movements of the human body are difficult to capture owing to the complexity of the three-dimensional skeleton model and occlusion problems. In this paper, we propose a motion capture system that tracks dynamic human motions in real time. Without using external markers, the proposed system adopts multiple depth sensors (Microsoft Kinect) to overcome the occlusion and body rotation problems. To combine the joint data retrieved from the multiple sensors, our calibration process samples a point cloud from depth images and unifies the coordinate systems in point clouds into a single coordinate system via the iterative closest point method. Using noisy skeletal data from sensors, a posture reconstruction method is introduced to estimate the optimal joint positions for consistent motion generation. Based on the high tracking accuracy of the proposed system, we demonstrate that our system is applicable to various motion-based training programs in dance and Taekwondo.

  • The hybrid control system for a wheeled mobile robot with nonholonomic constraints to perform a cluttered environment maneuver is proposed. The proposed hybrid control system consists of a continuous state system for the trajectory control, a discrete state system for the motion and orientation control, and an interface control system for the interaction process between the continuous dynamics and the discrete dynamics The continuous control systems are modeled by the switched systems with the control of driving wheels, and the digital automata for motion control are modeled and implemented by the abstracted motion of mobile robot. The motion control tasks such as path generation, motion planning, and trajectory control for a cluttered environment are investigated as the applications by simulation studies.

복잡 환경에서 가로막힌 물체 잡기를 위한 작업-모션 계획의 연계 (Task and Motion Planning for Grasping Obstructed Object in Cluttered Environment)

  • Object manipulation in cluttered environments remains an open hard problem. In cluttered environments, grasping objects often fails for various reasons. This paper proposes a novel task and motion planning scheme to grasp objects obstructed by other objects in cluttered environments. Task and motion planning (TAMP) aims to generate a sequence of task-level actions where its feasibility is verified in the motion space. The proposed scheme contains an open-loop consisting of three distinct phases: 1) Generation of a task-level skeleton plan with pose references, 2) Instantiation of pose references by motion-level search, and 3) Re-planning task based on the updated state description. By conducting experiments with simulated robots, we show the high efficiency of our scheme.

Technology Trends for Motion Synthesis and Control of 3D Character

  • In this study, we study the development and control of motion of 3D character animation and discuss the development direction of technology. Character animation has been developed as a data-based method and a physics-based method. The animation generation technique based on the keyframe method has been made possible by the development of the hardware technology, and the motion capture device has been used. Various techniques for effectively editing the motion data have appeared. At the same time, animation techniques based on physics have emerged, which realistically generate the motion of the character by physically optimized numerical computation. Recently, animation techniques using machine learning have shown new possibilities for creating characters that can be controlled by the user in real time and are expected to be developed in the future.

벌새의 비행메커니즘과 유동특성에 대한 2차원 수치해석 연구 (A Two-dimensional Numerical Study of Hummingbird's Flight Mechanisms and Flow Characteristics)

  • 벌새(Selasphorus rufus)의 날갯짓 운동에 의한 양력발생 및 추력발생 메커니즘을 이해하고자 2차원 수치해석을 수행하였다. 날갯짓 운동의 궤적은 풍동 실험에서 관찰된 결과를 모델링하여 해석하였다. 비행속도에 따라 날갯짓 운동 궤적이 달라지고, 그 결과 양력 및 추력의 발생 메커니즘이 변화하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 이를 통하여 비행속도를 저속비행과 고속비행으로 구분하여 물리적인 이해를 하고자 하였다. 양력발생의 경우에는 기존의 날갯짓 비행의 주된 양력발생 메커니즘인 앞전와류효과(Leading Edge Vortex Effect), 실속지연(Delayed Stall), 후류포착(Wake capture)등의 메커니즘을 확인하였으며, 벌새에서 유일하게 관찰되는 Upstroke에서의 양력발생 메커니즘을 유동특성 분석을 통하여 확인하였다. 추력발생의 경우에는 벌새의 골격 구조, 와류형성 및 압력구배에 따른 합력 성분의 분해를 통하여 이해할 수 있었다.

Motion Field Estimation Using U-Disparity Map in Vehicle Environment

  • In this paper, we propose a novel motion field estimation algorithm for which a U-disparity map and forward-and-backward error removal are applied in a vehicular environment. Generally, a motion exists in an image obtained by a camera attached to a vehicle by vehicle movement; however, the obtained motion vector is inaccurate because of the surrounding environmental factors such as the illumination changes and vehicles shaking. It is, therefore, difficult to extract an accurate motion vector, especially on the road surface, due to the similarity of the adjacent-pixel values; therefore, the proposed algorithm first removes the road surface region in the obtained image by using a U-disparity map, and uses then the optical flow that represents the motion vector of the object in the remaining part of the image. The algorithm also uses a forward-backward error-removal technique to improve the motion-vector accuracy and a vehicle's movement is predicted through the application of the RANSAC (RANdom SAmple Consensus) to the previously obtained motion vectors, resulting in the generation of a motion field. Through experiment results, we show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of an existing algorithm.

2자유도 동작범위를 고려한 reach volume의 해석적 생성 (Analytic Generation of Reach Volume Based on Range of Two Degrees of Freedom Motion)

  • When designing workplaces or arranging controls on panel, devices and controls should be placed within the reach of operator's arm or foot to guarantee effective performances. Most of the existing research on the reach volume were based on measurements of a few subject's arm reach, and limited to Caucasian and Chinese populations. Furthermore, reach volume considering foot or trunk motion have not been investigated. Range of human joint motion and that of two degrees of freedom motion are needed to generate reach volume analytically using the sweeping algorithm. However, range of two degrees of freedom motion has not been measured up to now. Therefore, range of two degrees of freedom motion was measured in this research, where 47 college students were participated voluntarily as subjects. The results showed that the motion of one joint can be limited by the motion of another motion, that is to say, the shoulder flexion was decreased significantly when the shoulder was adducted or abducted. Second, new approximate algorithms generating reach volumes were suggested, in which range of two degrees of freedom motion was used as input data. Depending upon the body segment included such as trunk, arm and leg, three types of reach volume were provided, in which the human body was modeled as a multilink system based on the robot kinematics and the sweeping method was employed. Reach volume generated analytically in this study showed statistically reasonable results when compared with that obtained from direct measurement.

Wave energy conversion utilizing vertical motion of water in the array of water chambers aligned in the direction of wave propagation

  • As a new technical approach, wave energy converter by using vertical motion of water in the multiple water chambers were developed to realize actual wave power generation as eco-environmental renewable energy. And practical use of wave energy converter was actually to require the following conditions: (1) setting up of the relevant device and its application to wave power generation in case that severe wave loading is avoided; (2) workability in installation and maintenance operations; (3) high energy conversion potential; and (4) low cost. In this system, neither the wall(s) of the chambers nor the energy conversion device(s) are exposed to the impulsive load due to water wave. Also since this system is profitable when set along the jetty or along a long floating body, installation and maintenance are done without difficulty and the cost is reduced. In this paper, we describe the system which consists of a float, a shaft connected with another shaft, a rack and pinion arrangement, a ratchet mechanism, and rotary type generator(s). Then, we present the dynamics model for evaluating the output electric power, and the results of numerical calculation including the effect of the phase shift of up/down motion of the water in the array of water chambers aligned along the direction of wave propagation.

비디오 프레임 영상의 자유 입체 모자이크 영상 제작을 위한 부등각 모델 연구 (Affine Model for Generating Stereo Mosaic Image from Video Frames)

  • 최근 항공 비디오 영상을 이용한 고해상도 모자이크 영상제작에 대한 연구가 큰 관심사로 대두되고 있다. 그 중, 본 논문에서는 입체 모자이크 영상 제작에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 입체 모자이크 영상은 연속된 비디오 프레임 영상에서 각기 다른 촬영 각도를 가지고 있는 전방과 후방 슬라이스 영상을 추출한 후, 각각을 모자이킹하여 좌우모자이크 영상을 생성함으로써 제작되어진다. 입체 모자이크 영상을 제작하기 위해서는 프레임 영상간의 기하학적 관계를 규명할 수 있는 이동변수(motion parameters)가 결정되어져야 한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 이동변수 중, 상대적인 이동변수를 규명할 수 있는 부등각 모델을 적용하였다. 이러한 상대적인 이동변수를 사용하여 모자이크 영상을 제작하는 방법을 자유 모자이크라고 한다. 자유 모자이크 과정은 결정된 이동변수를 이용하여 첫 번째 프레임 영상을 기준으로 영상등록을 수행한 후, 전방 및 후방 슬라이스 영상 추출, 접합선 추출, 영상 모자이킹 과정을 거쳐 수행된다. 본 연구의 결과로 좌우 모자이크 영상과 이를 이용한 여색입체 모자이크 영상을 나타내었으며, 정확도 분석을 위하여 종시차 분석을 수행하였다.
