Robust Design of Pulse Oximeter Using Dynamic Control and Motion Artifact Detection Algorithms

  • Arterial oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) monitoring for newborns requires special attention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Newborns have very low photo-plethysmogram (PPG) amplitudes and their body movements are difficult to contain. Hardware design and its associated signal processing algorithms should be robust enough so that faulty measurements can be avoided. In this study, improved designs were implemented to deal with low perfusion, motion artifact, and the influence of ambient light. Dynamic range was increased by using different LED intensities and a feedback system. To minimize the effects of motion artifact and to discard other unqualified data, four additional algorithms were used, which were based on dual-trace detection, continuity of DC level, morphology of PPG, and simultaneity check of $SpO_2$. Our $SpO_2$ system was tested with newborns with normal respiration in the NICU. Our system provided fast, real-time responses and 100% artifact detection was accomplished under 84% of $SpO_2$.

  • In this paper, we implemented the surveillance camera system capable of day and night shooting. To this end, it is designed to capture clear images even at night using a CMOS image sensor as well as an IR-LED. In addition, a relatively simple motion detection algorithm was proposed through color model separation. Motions can be detected by extracting only the H channel from the color model, dividing the image into blocks, and then applying the block matching method using the average color value between consecutive frames. When motions are detected during filming, an alarm sounds automatically and a day and night motion detection system is implemented that can capture and save the event screen to a PC.

  • This paper propose scene change detection algorithm using coefficient of forward prediction macro-block, backward prediction macro-block, and intra-coded macro-block on getting motion estimation. Proposed method detect scene change with correlation according picture type forward two picture or forward and backward two picture on video sequences. Proposed algorithm is high accuracy and can detect all scene change on video, and detect to occur scene change on P, B, I-picture.

Bubble-type Motion Detector Using a Pulsed-mode Oscillator and Delay Line (펄스 모드 발진기와 지연선로를 이용한 버블형 동작감지기)

  • This paper presents a new motion detector that has a bubble-layer detection zone using a pulsed-mode oscillator and delay line. The proposed motion detector controls the bubble-layer detection zone with pulse width of transmitted signals and creates IF signals only by reflected signals from the target within the detection zone whose position is determined by time delay of the delay line. The fabricated motion detector uses the pulsed-mode voltage controlled oscillator as a signal source which has a center frequency of 8 GHz, pulse width of 2 nsec and pulse period of 30 nsec. It successfully makes the bubble-layer detection zones at 1 m, 3 m and 5 m distant from itself using two delay lines with 7 nsec and 12 nsec delay, and is also demonstrated to detect the target within the detection zones.

  • Gap junctions are distributed within various cells and function as electrical synapses by freely exchanging small molecules. In the retina, the practical role of gap junctions in an animal's motion detection has not been investigated very much. In this study, optometer response (OMR) was used to Investigate the effects of drugs which modulate electrical synapses between retinal ceils. An Injection of carbenoxolone, 8-Br-cAMP, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or 8-Br-cGMP decreased goldfish's OMR in both light and dark conditions. In light conditions, an intravitreal injection of dopamine, SKF-38393 or eticlopride decreased OMR and that of SCH-23390 increased it. In dark conditions, the injections produced opposite results: dopamine, SKF-38393 and eticlopride increased OMR and SCH-23390 caused OMR to decrease. These results indicate that gap junctions between retinal cells have an Important role in goldfish's motion detection.

  • We propose a feature map method to detect a collision for a motion-based game. The feature map can be made an optimally reduced motion data using subtraction image and virtual ball images according to image size and condition. And we calculate the overlapped ratio between moving image data and objects. This ratio is an invariant for detection even though image size is changed. And we compare this ration with collision detection constant, the feature map can detect fast collisions as well as the collided direction. To evaluate the method, we implemented a motion-base game that consists of a web cam, a player, an enemy, and some virtual balls, and we obtained some valid results for our method for the collision detection. The results demonstrated that the proposed approach is robust, and they can be used as a basic collide detection algorithm for a motion-based game where the size and the position of characters are continuously changing.

  • This paper presents an efficient region-based motion segmentation method for segmenting of moving objects in a traffic scene with a focus on a Video Monitoring System (VMS). The presented method consists of two phases: motion detection and motion segmentation. Using the adaptive thresholding technique, the differences between two consecutive frames are analyzed to detect the movements of objects in a scene. To segment the detected regions into meaningful objects which have the similar intensity and motion information, the regions are initially segmented using a k-means clustering algorithm and then, the neighboring regions with the similar motion information are merged. Since we deal with not the whole image, but the detected regions in the segmentation phase, the computational cost is reduced dramatically. Experimental results demonstrate robustness in the occlusions among multiple moving objects and the change in environmental conditions as well.

  • Recently, intelligent surveillance camera systems are needed popularly. However, current researches are focussed on improvement of a single module rather than implementation of an integrated system. In this paper, we implemented a wireless surveillance camera system which is composed of face detection, and using motion sensor. In our implementation, we used a camera module from SHARP, a pair of wireless video transmission module from ECOM, a pair of ZigBee RF wireless transmission module from ROBOBLOCK, and a motion sensor module (AMN14111) from PANASONIC. We used OpenCV library for face dection and MFC for implement software. We identified real-time operations of face detection, PTT control, and motion sensor detecton. Thus, the implemented system will be useful for the applications of remote control, human detection, and using motion sensor.

Robust Features and Accurate Inliers Detection Framework: Application to Stereo Ego-motion Estimation

  • In this paper, an innovative robust feature detection and matching strategy for visual odometry based on stereo image sequence is proposed. First, a sparse multiscale 2D local invariant feature detection and description algorithm AKAZE is adopted to extract the interest points. A robust feature matching strategy is introduced to match AKAZE descriptors. In order to remove the outliers which are mismatched features or on dynamic objects, an improved random sample consensus outlier rejection scheme is presented. Thus the proposed method can be applied to dynamic environment. Then, geometric constraints are incorporated into the motion estimation without time-consuming 3-dimensional scene reconstruction. Last, an iterated sigma point Kalman Filter is adopted to refine the motion results. The presented ego-motion scheme is applied to benchmark datasets and compared with state-of-the-art approaches with data captured on campus in a considerably cluttered environment, where the superiorities are proved.

Implementation and Verification of Deep Learning-based Automatic Object Tracking and Handy Motion Control Drone System (심층학습 기반의 자동 객체 추적 및 핸디 모션 제어 드론 시스템 구현 및 검증)

  • In this paper, we implemented a deep learning-based automatic object tracking and handy motion control drone system and analyzed the performance of the proposed system. The drone system automatically detects and tracks targets by analyzing images obtained from the drone's camera using deep learning algorithms, consisting of the YOLO, the MobileNet, and the deepSORT. Such deep learning-based detection and tracking algorithms have both higher target detection accuracy and processing speed than the conventional color-based algorithm, the CAMShift. In addition, in order to facilitate the drone control by hand from the ground control station, we classified handy motions and generated flight control commands through motion recognition using the YOLO algorithm. It was confirmed that such a deep learning-based target tracking and drone handy motion control system stably track the target and can easily control the drone.
