  • The larvicidal activities of Piper nigrum fruit methanol extracts and its constituents against larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, were investigated using the leaf dipping method. Administering the P. nigrum methanol extract resulted in 100 and 97% mortality against diamondback moth larvae at 5.0 and 2.5 mg/mL concentrations, respectively. Larvicidal activities of the P. nigrum fruit-derived piperidine alkaloids, piperine, and N-isobutylamide, as well as pellitorine, guineensine, pipercide, and retrofractamide A against P. xylostella varied according to test compound. Based on the 48 h $LC_{50}$ values, the most toxic compound to diamondback moth larvae was guineensine (0.013 mg/mL) followed by retrofractamide A (0.020mg/mL), pipercide (0.033mg/mL), and pellitorine (0.046 mg/mL). The $LC_{50}$ value of piperine was >0.5 mg/mL.

  • The investigation of electroantennogram (EAG) using insect antennad has been primarily focused on the measurement of insect pheromone. Insect has highly specialized olfactroy receptors inside their antennae. In this paper, EAG was applied to detect general oborants and the feasibility of this system for the olfactroy biosensor was investigated. Electroantennogram measurement was carried out using the antennae of male silkworm moth, bombyx mori, and ammonia gas as the model odorant. EAG parametres including peak ampiltude increased linearly with the ammonia concentration and the reproducible electrical signals were generated at least for 2 hrs after the antenna was cut off from the sulkworm moth.

  • The species composition of the parasitoid complex and the degree of parasitism by each species were analyzed for gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) populations in the increasing phase. Total of 7,826 mid-late instar larvae and pupae were collected and reared from two collection sites in Gangwon Province, Korea. Two tachinid flies (Blepharipa schineri and Parasetigena silvestris), and the ichneumonid wasp (Coccygomimus disparis) were the most abundant parasitoids, in the order of decreasing importance. Other parasitoids occurring included Coteisa melanoscelus, Cotesia scheaferi, Glyptapanteles liparidis, Brachymeria lasus, and Exorista spp. The low incidence of the NPVirus is hypothesized to be an important factor in determining degree of parasitism rate by P. silvestris and B. schineri, and their relative dominance in the parasitoid complex.

  • Male-specific protein (MSP) is a soluble protein which is accumulated in high amounts In the hemolymph and other organs of adult male wax moth. The MSP was purified from adult male wax moth by gel filtration and reversed Phase column chromatography, and its amino acid sequence was determined. Three internal amino acid sequences of MSP were obtained by the in-gel digestion method using trypsin because of its blocked N-terminus. (omitted)

  • We surveyed moths on Gageodo island in the southwestern sea of the Korean Peninsula over three years (2009, 2012, 2013) and found a total of 253 species in 18 families. Geometridae had the greatest species richness, with 63 species, followed by Noctuidae, Erebidae, Crambidae and Sphingidae. The annual changes in species richness and abundance were not different and seasonal occurrence of species showed a unimodal pattern in which the numbers of species and individuals increased from April and May, peaked in June and decreased to September and October. Seven moth species (Pyralidae: Herculia drabicilialis Yamanaka, Didia striatella (Inoue); Crambidae: Clupeosoma pryeri (Butler), Demobotys pervulgalis (Hampson), Yezobotys dissimilis (Yamanaka), Syllepte cissalis Yamanaka; Erebidae: Hypena sinuosa (Wileman)) are reported for the first time in Korea.

  • Moth diversity of Mt. Duryunsan and its neighboring area, Haenam, Jeonnam, collected from 2001 to 2004 is presented. A total of 498 species were identified and a logarithmic equation to the species accumulation data provided a good fit $(R^2=0.98;$ y=218.52 LN (x)+161.88), predicting that 665 moth species are expected after ten years of collecting. Yearly species accumulation data showed that the moth faunal composition was changing by the appearance and disappearance of species: $94\~119$ species were newly collected in the following years; and $32\~90$ species were not collected in the following years. The fourth year was the most species-rich with 250 species. The need of long- term research of speciose insect taxa is briefly discussed.

  • The seasonal occurrence of smaller clearwing moth (Synanthedon tenuis) was monitored with sex pheromone traps in sweet persimmon orchards in Gimhae and Jinju in 1998, 2001, and 2002. Results indicated that it occurred in two generations a year. The first generation of the moth occurred from mid-May to early July, and the second one_from late July to late September, showing the peaks in early June and early to mid-August, respectively.

  • Inter-regional difference in median lethal concentration of Bacillus thuringiensis diamondback moth was disclosed to be high. Pyungchang strain showed at most 41 times resistance compared to KN-IA strain of which $LC_{50}$ value was 5.5 ppm. and Oksan strain Showed 11 times resistance. The JMC strain, susceptible to pyrethroids, also showed 12 times resistance against B.T., suggesting difference in resistance mechanism between pyrethroid and B.t.

  • Survival analysis with life span of silkworm moth was investigated from 277 varieties preserved and maintained in Korea. Ten varieties showed long and short life span were selected for the investigation of the longevity in response to mating and surviving. The density distributions of average life span of female and male in all varieties used was 8.3days about 13%. The frequency of average survival according to life span survived 178 varieties(64.3%)for 5-10 days in male, but the female was survived 147 varieties(53%) for 10-15days. Average longevity of unmated female and male were respectively 9.5days and 9.0 days, and female survived 0.5 days longer than male. On the other hand, average longevity of mated female and male were 8.8 days and 7.7 days, respectively. It was found that mating activities affected significantly to the adult life span, especially to that of males than that of females.

  • In organic Chinese cabbage fields, Commercial Bacillus thuringiensis products are used widely against diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella. We conducted the study to determine the effective spray-interval of commercialized B. thuringiensis against diamond back moth on Chinese cabbages. Chinese cabbage leaves were collected 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 10days after treatment in first trial and 0, 2, 4, 7, 9, 11days after treatment. We compared the insecticidal property of sprayed B. thuringiensis and the density of it on surface of Chinese cabbages using collected leaves. The insecticidal property maintained high until nine days after commercial B. thuringiensis products sprayed.
