  • To investigate the serum neutralizing antibodies against Ibaraki disease virus in the western area of Kyunggi province, a sero-epidemiological survey was done from August 1995 to March 1996. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. An overall prevalence of the neutralizing antibodies agaist Ibaraki virus was as high as 68.6% (218 positive reactors amomg 318 heads of dairy cattle). 2. It showed the regional differences with 60.5${\ulcorner}$(46/76) in Koyang, 75.2% (100/133) in Paju and 66.1% (72/109) in Kimpo. 3. It also appeared with a seasonal difference showing 74.4% of prevalence with the mean titer higher than 60 during the mosquito season (from August to November) and 58.6% of prevalence with the mean titer 22 after the mosquito season to March. 4. Any cross reactions between Ibaraki and bluetongue viruses were not detected in the ELISA and AGID tests.

  • The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis produces toxin inclusions that are deleterious to target insect larvae. These toxins are believed to interact with a specific receptor protein(s) that is present on the gut epithelial cells of the larvae. In various insect species (in particular those belonging to the lepidopteran class), aminopeptidase N (APN) is one of the two receptor proteins that are considered to be involved in toxin-receptor interactions. However, in mosquitoes, the nature and identity of the receptor protein is unknown. Here, using RT-PCR, we identified two isoforms of the APN transcripts in the Aedes aegypti mosquito larval midgut. These results are congruent with a previous report of multiple isoforms of the APN gene expression in lepidopteran larvae. Which of the two isoforms (or other yet unidentified receptor proteins) is involved in the killing of mosquito larvae remains to be elucidated.

  • The Zika virus, a flavivirus related to dengue and Japanese encephalitis was discovered in the Zika forest in Uganda, 1947. Since Zika virus was first reported in Brazil in May 2015, infections have occurred in at least 40 countries, especially in the Americas. Zika virus infection usually is asymptomatic or causes mild illness, but may be related to severe clinical manifestations, particularly microcephaly and Guillain-$Barr{\acute{e}}$ syndrome. Although the possibility of autochthonous Zika virus transmission in South Korea is low, the imported cases and Zika virus-transmitting mosquito should be adequately monitored and promptly managed. In addition, enhancing preparedness for Zika virus infection are needed.

  • B. sphaericus 1593 K-5 synthesize a potent entomicidal toxin against mosquito larvae. B. sphaericus EcoRl DNA fragment carrying the biocidal activity was clonied and expression in E. coli JM83. For the construction of a recombinant plasmid bearing the toxin activity the DNA of B. sphaericus was partially digested by the EcoRl. The EcoRl DNA fragments were ligated to plasmid pUC 8-EcoR1 site. The transformants were selected on LB plates containing X-gall and ampicilline. The transformants were bioassayed against mosquito larvae of which two clones showed biocidal activity. The two clones were redigested with Eco R1 and analyzed by 0.7% agarose gel electrophorsis.

  • Poor subsistence farmers who live in a semi-arid area of northern Ethiopia build irrigation systems to overcome water shortages. However, there is a high risk of malaria transmission when increased standing water provides more favorable habitats for mosquito breeding. This is a serious problem because there are many barriers to malaria control measures and health care systems in the area. Using a causal loop diagram and computer simulations, the author attempted to visually illustrate positive and negative feedbacks between mosquito and human populations in the context of Simret, which is a small village located in northern Ethiopia and is generally considered a malaria-free area. The simulation results show that the number of infectious mosquitos increases to 17,215 at its peak, accounting for 3.5% of potentially dangerous mosquitos. At the same time, the number of sick people increases to 574 at its peak, accounting for 15% of local population. The malaria outbreak is controlled largely because of a fixed number of vulnerable people or local population that acts as an intermediate host.

  • The repellent activity of methanol extracts from 8 aromatic medicinal plant species and a steam distillate against blood-starved Aedes aegypti (L.) females was laboratory examined by skin test and compared with that of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (deet). Reponeses varied according to Plant species. At a dose of $0.1mg/\textrm{cm}^2$, potent repellency against adult mosquitoes was obtained with extracts of Cinnamomum camphora (94.1 %) Cinnamomum cassia bark (91.2%), Eugenia caryophyllata flower bud (72.2%), and Tilia amurensis (69.4%). Repellent activity of these plant extracts was comparable to that of deet (83.4%). The plants described merit further study as potential mosquito-repellent agents.

  • Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a vaccine-preventable mosquito-borne disease caused by infection with the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). JEV has five genotypes, including genotype V (GV), which is considered ancestral to the other genotypes. The first GV strain, GV Muar, was isolated from a Malayan patient in 1952 and GV did not reappear for 57 years until GV XZ0934 was isolated from a mosquito sample in China. Since 2010, 21 GV strains have been identified in Republic of Korea (ROK). Both GV Muar and GV XZ0934 are more pathogenic than other GI/GIII strains and are serologically distinct. However, because the ROK's GV strains have not been experimentally tested, their characteristics are not known. Characterization of the ROK's isolates is needed to enable development of effective GV strain-based vaccines to protect against GV infections.
