  • The explosion of a chemical tanker ship during cargo transshipment via double-banking at Ulsan Port, resulted in major damage including fires involving nearby ships. As a follow-up measure to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents, the 'Safety Management of Dangerous Goods in Port' was established, and the designation of a transshipment pier for dangerous goods is required given the risk of explosion and the impact on major facilities in the port. This study evaluated the Fire & Explosion Index of major transshipment cargoes in Ulsan Port to design a transshipment pier based on the Explosion Risk Assessment. Based on the results of Fire & Explosion Index evaluation of styrene monomer and benzene, severe explosion risk was confirmed, and the exposure radius was calculated. Based on the results of the exposure radius, the risk range for each major pier was calculated, and 12 terminals were proposed as transshipment pier candidates considering port facilities, surrounding dangerous facilities, and residential aspects. Since the results of the study suggest transshipment piers based on the risk radius alone, maritime traffic safety, pier and mooring facilities, safety facilities and accessibility for emergency response should be considered comprehensively to designate actual transshipment piers.

  • Mokpo coastal area is connected to the adjacent a long river and two large basins. It is essential for port planning coastal zone management and environmental impact study to analyze the data related to the ship operation and variation of current and water quality due to the development of water area including dredging reclamation and estuary barrage. The Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho basins discharge much of water through water gates for the purpose of flood control and prohibit salt intrusion at the inland fresh water area. To meet this purpose discharge through the gates have been done at the period of maximum water level difference between inner river and sea level. This discharged water may cause the changes of current pattern and other environmental influences in the vicinity and inner area of semi-closed Mokpo harbor. In this study ADI method is applied to the governing equation for the analysis of the changes on current pattern due to discharged water. As the results of this study it is known that the discharging operation causes many changes including the increase of current velocity at the front water area at piers approaching passage and anchorages. Discussion made on the point of problems such as restricted maneuverability and the safety of morred vessels at pier and anchorage. To minimize this influence the linked gate operation discharging warning system and laternative mooring system are recommended.

  • Shipbuilders carry out the operation test to check the conditions of the main propulsion system and auxiliaries for moored vessel in the quoy before the sea trial. The estimation of the thrust and torque for the partially submerged propeller should be prepared to ensure the safety of mooring line and the ship. In this paper, the variations of the thrust and torque according to the shaft submergence and the propeller rotating speed in bollard pull condition are investigated with the model test and the numerical analysis. Based on these resaearch, the empirical formula representing the physical phenomena of the partially submerged propeller is derived and validated through comparison to measurement results of full-scale propellers under the quoy operation test.

  • Most of domestic shipyards are located at coastal regions which are affected by typhoons nearly every year. For effectiveness of shipbuilding, shipyards contain many facilities which are light-weighted and affected dominantly by wind. In the present paper, we analyze various wind fields over a shipyard including surrounding topology and structures to evaluate the structural safety of the facilities posed in the strong wind. Extreme wind speed for a study region was estimated by typhoon Monte Carlo simulation and then used for inlet wind speed for CFD analysis for wind load on the facilities. Considering geometrical wind effects, we assess the surface pressure of the elements as the pressure factor, the ratio of surface pressure to dynamic pressure. The results show that the simulated wind speed is greater than the design wind speed for the some facilities because of the shipyard's geometry. It also shows that surrounding topography in coastal area is needed to be considered and adjustment for design wind speed at wind load standard application is necessary for mooring ship and industry facilities.

  • This study deals with dynamic instability of a tendon moored submerged floating tunnel (SFT) due to tendon slack. In general, environmental loadings such as wave and current govern SFT design. Especially, the wave force, whose amplitude and direction continuously change, directly induces the dynamic behavior of the SFT. The motion of the floating tube, induced by the wave force, leads dynamic response of the attached tendons and the dynamic change of internal forces of the tendons significantly affects to the fatigue design as well as the structural strength design. When the severe motion of the SFT occurs due to significant waves, tendons might lose their tension and slack so that the floating tube can be transiently instable. In this study, the characteristics of dynamic instability of the SFT due to tendon slack are investigated performing hydrodynamic analysis. In addition, the effects of draft, buoyancy-weight ratio, and tendon inclination on tendon slack and dynamic instability behavior are analytically investigated.

Ultimate purpose of it is to minimize the number of crew by guaranteeing economical efficiency of shipping service. Recently, the research is being achieving to compensate various nonlinear parameters of vessel and apply it is course keeping control, track keeping control, roll-rudder stabilization, dynamic ship positioning and automatic mooring control etc. using optimizing control technique. Relation between rudder angle controlled by steering machine of vessel and ship-heading angle, and load condition of ship are nonlinear, which affect various parameters of shipping service. The speed and direction of waves, velocity and quantity of wind, which also cause the non-linearity of it. Therefore the autopilot system of ship requires the robust control algorithm can overcome various non-linearity. • The purpose in having a control rod an a buoy system is to control the motion of it. The system may be composed entirely af a single circular cylinder finder and a lang mooring anchor cable. A control rod has one function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of the effects of mutual interference, then determine the stability characteristics of the body. In this paper, the study of control-rod-attached buoy's 2-dimensional section was accomplished. model tests and numerical simulations had been carried out with different diameters of control rods. and varying the Reynolds number $Re=5,000{\sim}25,000$ based an the cylinder diameter(D=50mm) to. predict the performance af the body and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flaw field 50mm circular cylinder had been used during the whale experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

  • Shipbuilder checks the status of main engine and propeller operation before sea trial. Generally these tests are carried out at a quay during fitting out of the ship. For these tests the operator has to estimate the maximum RPM with permissible torque and thrust to ensure the safety of the mooring line and ship. In this paper, the propeller characteristics according to the draft variation for a moored ship is inveatigated. From these tests, it is shown that shaft submergence is a dominant parameter in the propeller performance at shallow shaft submergence and that the propeller performance is dependent upon the propeller RPM when the shaft submergence is kept unchanged. In this study, a simple formula of the required thrust for a given propeller shaft submergence and propeller RPM is derived. 1be propeller thrust, which is calculated by another formula in case of dtep draft, is compared with results of bollard pull test for FPSO.

  • Interest in renewable energy is rapidly growing around the world. One of the most popular renewable energy sources is solar power, and photovoltaic (PV) systems are the most representative route for generating solar energy. However, with the growing adoption of solar power systems, the demand for land on which to install these systems has increased, which has caused environmental degradation. Recently, floating PV systems have been designed to utilize idle water surface areas of dams, rivers, and oceans. Because floating PV systems will be exposed to harsh environmental stresses, the safety of such systems should be secured before installation. In this study, the structural robustness of a floating PV system was analyzed by conducting numerical simulation to investigate whether the system can withstand harsh environmental stresses, such as wind and wave loads. Additionally, conventional wind and wave load predictions based on the design method and the simulation results were compared. The comparison revealed that the design method overestimated wind and wave loads. The total drag of the PV system was significantly overestimated by the conventional design criteria, which would increase the cost of the mooring system. The simulation offers additional advantages in terms of identifying the robustness of the floating PV system because it considers real-world environmental factors.
