  • Anthricin (Deoxypodophyllotoxin), a naturally occurring flavolignan, has well known anti-cancer properties in several cancer cells, such as prostate cancer, cervical carcinoma and pancreatic cancer. However, the effects of Anthricin are currently unknown in oral cancer. We examined the anticancer effect and mechanism of action of Anthricin in human FaDu hypopharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells. Our data showed that Anthricin inhibits cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner ($IC_{50}$ 50 nM) in the MTT assay and Live & Dead assay. In addition, Anthricin treated FaDu cells showed marked apoptosis by DAPI stain and FACS. Furthermore, Anthricin activates anti-apoptotic factors such as caspase-3, -9 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), suggesting that caspase-mediated pathways are involved in Anthricin- induced apoptosis. Anthricin treatment also leads to accumulation of the pro-apoptotic factor Bax, followed by inhibition of cell growth. Taken together, these results indicate that Anthricn-induced cell death of human FaDu hypopharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells is mediated by mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathway. In summary, our findings provide a framework for further exploration on Anthricin as a novel chemotherapeutic drug for human oral cancer.

  • Injury of the musculocutanous nerve can be associated with a proximal humeral fracture or shoulder dislocation, and injury of the brachial plexus. However, injury of this nerve associated with a humeral shaft fracture has rarely been reported. Diagnosis of the musculocutaneous nerve injury is difficult because its sensory loss is ill-defined, and examination of elbow flexion is difficult when it is associated with fractures. We report an unusual case of musculocutaneous nerve injury in a 27 years old woman who had multiple injuries including a humerus shaft fracture, an ipsilateral radius shaft fracture, and an associated radial nerve laceration. Diagnosis of the musculocutaneous nerve injury was delayed because combined fractures of the humerus and radius prevented proper examination of the elbow motion and nerve grafting of the radial nerve delayed early elbow motion exercise. Delayed exploration of the musculocutaneous nerve 6 months after trauma showed complete rupture of the nerve at its entry into the coracobrachialis muscle and the defect was successfully managed by sural nerve graft.

  • 3D travel time tomography was conducted to characterize the subsuface structure in the valley area. In this study, an area($200m{\times}200m$), where borehole informations were available to aid in the interpretation, was covered with wide source/receiver coverage. In data acquisition, both hole to hole and reverse VSP array was employed. For the inversion, 3D seismic traveltime tomography algorithm based on Fresnel volume was implemented. When compared 3D velocity cube with the geological survey and drilling logs, both results were matched well. From this, we concluded that 3D seismic travel time tomography has enough potential to the field application.

  • In this paper a polarimetric airborne SAR measurement has been used to study the radar polarimetric characteristics in the intertidal area on the south coastof the Korea. The L-band NASA/JPL airborne SAR (AIRSAR) data, which were acquired on the intertidal zone during PACRIM-II Korea campaign on September 30, 2000, were used for this research. The most intertidal zones of Yeoja Bay are composed of muddy soils with high silt and clay percentage. Models of microwave scattering from rough surfaces, i.e., semi-empirical model, and Extended Bragg model, were applied to investigate the surface characteristics of intertidal zones.

  • This paper presents the occurrence and characteristics of the basaltic andesite-siltstone peperite in the lower part of the Gyehwari Formation (Cretaceous), Buan-gun, Jeonbuk province, SW Korea. The peperite is associated with tabular basaltic andesite body, concordantly intercalated with red siltstone and silty sandstone interbeds of floodplain facies. Development of the peperite along the upper margin of the andesite and its textural transition from a dispersed blocky type inward into a closely packed type collectively indicate an intrusive origin (?sill) of the andesite. Magma intrusion and subsequent peperite formation suggest an active syndepositional volcanism since the early stage of evolution of the Gyehwa Basin. The andesite is dated at Late Cretaceous (Santonian) by K-Ar whole-rock radiometric method.

  • The analysis of ocean environment offers us essential information for ocean exploration. But ocean environment has a lot of environmental variables such as the movements of nodes by an ocean current, corrosion by salt water, attenuation of radio wave, occurrences of multi-path and difficulty of sensor nodes' deployment. It is accordingly difficult and complex to gather and process the environmental information through ocean data communication due to these constraints of ocean environment unlike the terrestrial wireless networks. To overcome these problems, we organized ocean communication network for monitoring underwater environment by real experiment in Gyeongpoho similar to ocean environment. Therefore, this paper aims at overcoming major obstacles in ocean environment, effectively deploying sensor nodes for ocean environment monitoring and defining an efficient structure suitable for communication environment by the implementation of ocean environment monitoring system in Gyeongpoho.

  • As the paradigm which emphasizes nurturing creative elites is introduced, more attention has been paid to children playing and their creativity. This change means that the importance of creativity is emphasized in the education of children, and furthermore, playgrounds which focus on creativity and imagination are needed. Therefore, this study examines the spatial characteristics of playgrounds for children and suggested strategies to improve them. There are five spatial characteristics of a creative playground: aesthetics, being eco-friendly, exploration, challenging and variable. Through the five characteristics, playgrounds were analysed based on ten expressive elements and the results are summarized: Creative playgrounds for children should have an attractive design with sculptural elements which stimulate children to be excited through associable shapes and abstract colors. Second, shelter type structures and a flexible flow design are needed so that children can feel free and be encouraged to explore in diverse ways. Third, as playgrounds for children provide spaces for rest in addition to play, organic facilities and eco-friendly materials for the rest space should to be used. Fourth, as childhood is a period when emotional, cognitive and physical development are achieved, organic geographical features and atypical facilities should be provided so that children can acquire extensive skills and join in physical activities. Finally, creative playgrounds for children should have mobile or variable facilities which consider the characteristics of children who want to do diverse activities and play different games. This study analysed playgrounds for children and suggested strategies to improve them. For successful design and use of creative playgrounds, it is suggested that intensive research on them and consultation with experts should be considered.

  • Korea augmentation satellite system (KASS), which is a satellite-based augmentation system tailored for Korea, was launched for development in 2014. SBAS is a standard for aviation but it can also be utilized in non-aviation applications. The type and content of transmitted in SBAS data format are restricted. In order to utilize SBAS in fields that require the precision within centimeters, additional information has to be transmitted. It is important that data transmitted in nonstandard SBAS data not affect any operation of SBAS equipment. In this paper, we propose a non-standard SBAS data transmission method applicable to non-aviation applications that does not affect aviation SBAS receivers.

  • Purpose: Now the CT scanner and PACS program proved to be an excellent instrument for detection and localization of most facial foreign bodies above certain minimum levels of detectability. The severity of injury in penetrating trauma on the face is often underestimated in physical examination. Wood, with its porous consistency and organic nature, provides a good medium for microbial agents. This is a report of our recent experience with wooden foreign bodies in the parotid gland imaged with CT. Methods: A 9-year-old boy was referred for evaluation of possible retained foreign body within his face. One day earlier, he had fallen, face down approximately 1 miter onto ground. He had subsequently undergone an exploration of his right parotido-masseteric area at an outside hospital with repair of a right facial laceration. Enhanced 2 mm axial and coronal CT scans were obtained through the face. Axial and coronal CT images were obtained with a General Electric(Milwaukee, Wis) 9800 CT scanner at 130 kV, 90 mA, with a 2 mm section thickness. Results: We finally decided the linear "gas" attenuation was a foreign body because of its linear configuration, which did not conform to that of an anatomic structure, and on the basis of articles that described a wood foreign body in the orbit as having the appearance of air. We found that wood was hypoattenuating($-464{\pm}27HU$). Conclusion: We recommend this type of software program for CT scanning for any patient with an injury on the face in which a foreign body is suspected.
