  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) often uses small beam segments. The heterogeneity effect is well known for relatively large field sizes used in the conventional radiation treatments. However, this effect is not known in small fields such as the beamlets used in IMRT. There are many factors that can cause errors in the small field i.e. electronic disequilibrium and multiple electron scattering. This study prepared geometrically regular heterogeneous phantoms, and compared the measurements with the calculations using the Convolution/Superposition algorithm and Monte Carlo method for small beams. This study used the BEAM00/EGS4 code to simulate the head of a Varian 2300C/D. The commissioning of a 6MV photon beam were performed from two points of view, the beam profiles and depth doses. The calculated voxel size was 1${\times}$1${\times}$2$\textrm{cm}^2$ with field sizes of 1${\times}$1$\textrm{cm}^2$, 2${\times}$2$\textrm{cm}^2$, and 5${\times}$5$\textrm{cm}^2$. The XiOTM TPS (Treatment Planning System) was used for the calculation using the Convolution/Superposition algorithm. The 6MV photon beam was irradiated to homogeneous (water equivalent) and heterogeneous phantoms (water equivalent + air cavity, water equivalent + bone equivalent). The beam profiles were well matched within :t1 mm and the depth doses were within ${\pm}$2%. In conclusion, the dose calculations of the Convolution/Superposition and Monte Carlo simulations showed good agreement with the film measurements in the small field.

  • Nonparametric procedures in randomized block design was proposed by Friedman (1937) as a general alternative. This method is used to find out the difference in treatment effect. It can cause a loss of inter block information using the ranking in each block. This paper proposed nonparametric procedures using an aligned method proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (1962) to reduce block information based on joint placement suggest by Jo and Kim (2013) in a randomized block design. We also compared the power of the test of the proposed procedures and established method through a Monte Carlo simulation.

  • The maximum likelihood(ML) estimation has excellent accuracy for frequency estimation of multiple sinusoids, but the maximum likelihood function requires much loss owing to the high nonlinearity. This paper presents a simplified maximum likelihood estimation, in order to improve the nonlinearity of the maximum likelihood estimation for frequencies of sinusoids in signals. This method is applied to the frequency estimation of sinusoidal signals corrupted by white or colored measurement noise. Monte-carlo simulations are conducted for the comparison of ML method with the best MFBLP method, in terms of sampled mean, root mean square and relative bias. The power spectral density and the position of frequency in unit circle are appeared in figures.

  • In a previous article, for analyzing a stochastic activity network, Cho proposed a method for estimating the moments (mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis) of the project completion time under the assumption that the durations of activities are independently and normally distributed. Developed in the present article is a method for estimating those moments for stochastic activity networks which allow any type of distributions for activity durations. The proposed method uses the moment matching approach to discretize the distribution function of activity duration, and then a discrete inverse-transform method to determine activity durations to be used for calculating the project completion time. The proposed method can be easily applied to large-sized activity networks, and computationally more efficient than Monte Carlo simulation, and its accuracy is comparable to that of Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Mack and Skillings (1980) proposed a nonparametric method in a randomized block design with replications. This method employs the mean of observations instead of each observation. However, it has the inherent disadvantage that there may be a loss of information. In this paper, we proposed a nonparametric method that employees an aligned method and linear placement statistics to supplement its weakness. A Monte-Carlo study is performed to compare the power of the proposed method with previous methods.

  • Typical Nonparametric methods for randomized block design with replications are two methods proposed by Mack (1981) and Mack and Skillings (1980). This method is likely to cause information loss because it uses the average of repeated observations instead of each repeated observation in the processing of each block. In order to compensate for this, we proposed a test method using linear placement statistics, which is a score function applied to the joint placement method proposed by Chung and Kim (2007). Monte Carlo simulation study is adapted to compare the power with previous methods.

  • This study presents the nonlinear responses of a hinged-clamped beam under broadband random excitation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system or nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the joint moments of response coordinates. Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure schemes are used to close the infinite coupled moment equations. The closed equations are then solved for response statistics in terms of system and excitation parameters. The case of two mode interaction is considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. Monte Carlo simulation is used for numerical verification.

  • In order to shield the neutrons affecting the background of Low Level Gamma Ray Spectrometer, a neutron shielder was designed. The method used in this study for neutron shielding was the deceleration of fast neutrons by high density polyethylene(HDPE) and the absorption of those slowing-down neutrons by $B_4C$. The calculation results of neutron Interaction in HDPE using Monte Carlo simulation code MCNP4B showed that the thermal-neutron flux was maximum at 10 cm thickness of HDPE. The results also showed that 95% of the thermal neutrons were absorbed by 2 mm thickness of $B_4C$ absorber Consisted of 30 w% $B_4C$ and 70 w% polymer. The results of the Monte Carlo calculation were in good agreement with the experimental value obtained by a neutron shielding apparatus designed for this purpose.

  • In this paper, we consider an interference scenario and interference simulation method of intra-wireless vessel communications using SEAMCAT (Spectrum Engineering Advanced Monte-Carlo Analysis) simulator. The interference between electromagnetic equipment and low power radio apparatus can deteriorate a stability of vessel system and it is necessary to analyze the interference probability between radio devices. The proposed simulation method in the 13.56MHz ISM frequency band shows that the interference effect can be minimized when the distance between the devices is greater than 4.7m and 2.7m in case that the victim receiver (VR) are RFID and remote control(RC) toy, respectively. The proposed interference scenario and simulation method are expected to be helpful in the interference probability analysis and regulation policy in the ISM frequency band.

  • As the use of radiation for medical purposes increases, the exposure dose of medical workers is also increasing. To reduce this dose, various studies on changing the shielding material have been conducted. Recently, a new method to reduce the dose at the entrance of the radiation treatment room was proposed by using the photoelectric effect that occurs when the radiation is scattered. Because this method is particularly effective for low-energy photons, in this study, a slit-type structure was proposed as a excellent shielding structure against scattered x-ray in a general photography room, and was evaluated the shielding effect by Monte Carlo simulation. As a result of the calculation, this study found that in the case of a structure in which steel plates with a thickness of 2 mm and a width of 5 cm are stacked at 2 mm intervals, a shielding effect was approximately 99.9% or more, excluding the heights of the floor and the patient where scattering occurs directly.
