  • The usage of sandwich structure is extensively increasing in lightweight protective structures due to its low density and other useful properties. Sandwich panels made of metal sheets with unfilled cellular cores are found to exhibit lower deflections by comparing to an equivalent monolithic plate of same metal and similar mass per unit density. However, the process of localized impact on solid structures involving plastic deformation, high strain rates, temperature effect, material erosion, etc. does not hold effectively as that of monolithic plate. In present work, the applications of the sandwich plate with corrugated core have been extended to develop optimized lightweight armour using foam as medium of its core by explicit finite element analysis (FEA). The mechanisms of hardened steel projectile penetration of aluminum corrugated sandwich panels filled with foams have been numerically investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). A comparative study is done for the triangular corrugated sandwich plate filled with polymeric foam and metallic foam with different densities in order to achieve the optimum penetration resistance to ballistic impact. Corrugated sandwich plates filled with metallic foams are found to be superior when compared to the polymeric one. The optimized results are then compared with that of equivalent solid and unfilled cores structure to observe the effectiveness of foam-filled corrugated sandwich plate which provides an effective resistance to ballistic response. The novel structure can be the alternative to solid aluminum plate in the applications of light weight protection system.

  • Precast concrete(P.C.) large panel structures have usually weaker stiffness at joints than that of monolithic in-situ reinforced concrete structures. But structural designers do not in general take into account this characteristics of P.C. large panel structures and use the same analytical models as for the monolithic structure. Therefore, the results of analysis obtained by using these models may be quite different from those actually occurring in real P.C. structure. In this study, the change in force and stress distribution and deflections of structure caused by applying lower shear stiffness at vertical joints are investigated through trying several finite element modeling schemes specific for P.C. structures, Finally, for engineers in practice, a simplified model, which takes account of the effect of lower shear stiffness at vertical joints, is proposed with the understanding on possible amount of errors.

  • Electrical coupling of monolithic 3D inverter(M3D-INV) consisting of Junctionless FET(JLFET) was investigated. Depending on the thickness of Inter Layer Dielectirc (ILD) between top and bottom JLFETs, $N_{gate}-N_{gate}$ capacitance and transconductance $g_m$ are changed by the gate voltage of bottom JLFET. Therefore, when using a stacked structure with the ILD below tens nm, AC electrical coupling between two transistors in M3D-INV should be considered.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the optical properties of pre-colored dental monolithic zirconia ceramics of various thicknesses sintered in a microwave and those in a conventional furnace. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A2-shade of pre-colored monolithic zirconia ceramic specimens ($22.0mm{\times}22.0mm$) in 3 thickness groups of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mm were divided into 2 subgroups according to the sintering methods (n=9): microwave and conventional sintering. A spectrophotometer was used to obtain CIELab color coordinates, and translucency parameters and CIEDE2000 color differences (${\Delta}E_{00}$) were measured. The relative amount of monoclinic phase ($X_m$) was estimated with x-ray diffraction. The surface topography was analyzed by atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope. Statistical analyses were conducted with two-way ANOVA (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. There were small interaction effects on CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, and TP between sintering method and thickness (P<.001): $L^*$ (partial eta squared ${{\eta}_p}^2=0.115$), $a^*$ (${{\eta}_p}^2=0.136$), and TP (${{\eta}_p}^2=0.206$), although higher $b^*$ values were noted for microwave sintering regardless of thickness. Color differences between two sintering methods ranged from 0.52 to 0.96 ${\Delta}E_{00}$ units. The $X_m$ values ranged from 7.03% to 9.89% for conventional sintering, and from 7.31% to 9.17% for microwave sintering. The microwave-sintered specimen demonstrated a smoother surface and a more uniform grain structure compared to the conventionally-sintered specimen. CONCLUSION. With reduced processing time, microwave-sintered pre-colored dental monolithic zirconia ceramics can exhibit similar color perception and translucency to those by conventional sintering.

  • PURPOSE. To assess the degree of conversion (DC) and light irradiance delivered to light-cured and dual-cured cements by application of different light sources through various types of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cured and dual-cured resin cement specimens with 1.5-mm thicknesses (n=300, 10/group), were placed under four types of crystalline core structure (Vita Enamic, Vita Suprinity, GC Ceresmart, Degudent Prettau Anterior). The specimens were irradiated for 40 seconds with an LED Soft-Start or pulse-delay unit or 20 seconds with a QTH unit. DC ratios were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after curing the specimen at 1 day and 1 month. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (for paired comparison) and the Kruskal-Wallis H test (for multiple comparison), with a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. DC values were the highest for RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cure specimens polymerized with the LED Soft-Start unit. The combination of the Vita Suprinity disc and RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement yielded significantly higher values at both timepoints with all light units (all, P<.05). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the DC of RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement was improved significantly by the use of Vita Suprinity and the LED Soft-Start light unit. We strongly recommend the combined use of an LED light unit and dual-cure luting cement for monolithic ceramic restorations.

  • The internal pressure capacity of a modular containment structure requires analysis to prevent the release of radioactive material in the case of an accident. To analyze the capacity, FEM models were prepared while considering the tendon arrangements and the contact surfaces between precast concrete modules, and then static analyses were carried out. The changing characteristics in the displacement and stress under step-wise loading were analyzed, along with the effects of selected parameters. For comparison, the capacity of a monolithic containment structure was also analyzed. Parametric analyses were done to suggest ranges of parameters such as the tendon force, tendon spacing, tendon location in concrete thickness direction, friction coefficient, and concrete thickness. The tendon force and frictional force provide a combined effect between contact surfaces of modules. The same level of internal pressure capacity can be secured even in the modular containment structure as in the monolithic containment structure by increasing the tendon force with additional tendons.

  • In this paper, the open ring type DGS(Defected Ground Structure) resonator, applicable to MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit), is proposed to improve phase noise characteristics of RF oscillator. This resonator is planar type, therefore, it easy to design miniaturrized., and takes relatively high Q value. Modeling the equivalent parameter of resonator is needed, when designing the RF oscillator with resonator. The mathematical method to solve the equivalent parameter of the resonator from the measured results of resonator is introduced in this paper. To verify the method, DGS resonator with 5.8 GHz center frequency is fabricated, for measuring characteristics and calculating the equivalent parameter. The result from this process is compared with the data of the ADS simulation, and as a result both were identical.

  • In this work, using a ${\pi}$-type multiple coupled microstrip line structure (MCMLS) and RCR (Resistor Capacitor Resistor) structure, we fabricated ultra-compact and high isolation Wilkinson power divider on GaAs MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit). The line length of the Wilkinson power divider was reduced to about ${\lambda}$/46, and its size was 0.304 [$mm^2$], which is 12.1 % of conventional one. Compared with conventional Wilkinson power divider, isolation characteristic of the proposed Wilkinson power divider was highly improved by using RCR insertion method. The proposed Wilkinson power divider showed good RF performances in C/X band.

  • Sintering characteristics and electrical properties of xPb(Mg$_{1}$8/Te$_{1}$8/Mn$_{1}$4/Nb$_{1}$2/) $O_{3}$-(1-x) Pb (Zr$_{1}$2/ $Ti_{1}$2/) $O_{3}$ (x=0.075, 0.1, 0.125) ceramics are investigated. A sintering temperature of ceramics could be reduced to 950.deg. C by a reaction between PbO and B site compound material. The physical properties of 0.1Pb(Mg, Te, Mn, Nb) $O_{3}$ - 0.9Pb(Zr, Ti) $O_{3}$ bulk ceramic with 3wt% glass frit(0.857PbO-0.143W $O_{3}$) were following : den = 7.95 g/cm$^{3}$, T$_{c}$=340.deg. C, .epsilon.$_{33}$= 754, k$_{31}$=0.3 and Q.=1780. The 3-layer piezoelectric transformer by using a tape casting method showed a good monolithic structure, and its voltage setup ratio was 2.5 times higher than that of a single device by using bulk ceramics.s.s.
