The present paper gives a review of the recent development of a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) available for both particle size measurements and production of monodisperse particles in the nanometer range. Operating principles of a general DMA are introduced as well as characteristics of highly functional DMAs such as those capable of classifying particles in a measurement range as broad as 1-1000nm at low pressures. Some examples of DMA applications are also described.

A well defined electro-spraying and electro-static precipitator(ESP) experiment is carried out to investigate the charging characteristics of the submicron particles and the monodisperse particles. The basic idea is that the highly charged electro-sprayed droplets will be produced into the gas when the Coulombic repulsive force on the surface is higher than the surface tension of the spraying liquid. During this process many highly charged smaller droplets or ions, if the droplets are completely dried out, will be produced in the space. These charged species will be attached ion the particles and then eventually charge the particles. These charged particles will be easily collected with ESP. The experimental results show that the atomizer generated particles with geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 62nm are charged more than 90% even at the mean face velocity of 2.5m/s at the charging zone.

A new unipolar aerosol charger was developed by using an indirect photoelectric charging. The charger consists of two coaxial tubes, the inner UV lamp wrapped with stainless mesh and the outer Al cylinder. In this study, the effects of flow rate, particle size, and electric field were examined to search the optimal charging conditions with experimental and numerical methods. Monodisperse NaCl particles were fed into an annular space and the particles were charged by negative ions generated from Al plate exposed to the UV light. According to experimental results, the average number of elementary charge on particles increases from 2.5 to 5.5 as particle size increases from 50nm to 130nm at 2.5 L/min and 100V. The average number of elementary charge on particles was maximized at 25V as the electric potential between the stainless mesh and Al plate was varied from 0V to 400V.
We have introduced the Pickering emulsion systems to generate novel confining geometries for the selforganization of monodisperse polymer microspheres using nanoparticle-stabilized emulsion droplets encapsulating the building block particles. Then, through the slow evaporation of emulsion phases by heating, these microspheres were packed into regular polyhedral colloidal clusters covered with nanoparticle-stabilizers made of silica. Furthermore, polymer composite colloidal clusters were burnt out leaving nonspherical hollow micro-particles, in which the configurations of the cluster structure were preserved during calcination. The selfassembled porous architectures in this study will be potentially useful in various applications such as novel building block particles or supporting materials for catalysis or gas adsorption.
Steady shear response of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) system containing porous mono-disperse magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) spheres synthesized by solvothermal method is demonstrated. In applied magnetic field the interaction between the spherical particles leads to form strong columnar structures enhancing the yield strength and viscosity of the MRFs. The yield strengths of the MRFs also scale up with the concentration of magnetic particles in the fluid. Considering magnetic dipolar interaction between the particles the magneto-mechanical response of the MRFs is explained. Unlike metallic iron particles, the low-density corrosion resistant soft-ferrimagnetic $Fe_3O_4$ spherical particles make our studied MRF system efficient and reliable for shock-mitigation/vibration-isolation applications.
We have successfully synthesized relatively monodisperse and cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde (M-F) microspheres by dispersed polycondensation and subsequent pH adjustment with serum replacement cleaning. The average particle sizes (equation omitted): weight-average and (equation omitted) : number-average), the polydispersity index (equation omitted), the number of particles N$\_$p/ and the gel content of the M-F microspheres were observed by varying the pH, the surfactant concentration, and the polymerization temperature. We observed that both the pH and the polymerization temperature were predominant factors in determining (equation omitted) and N$\_$p/, but the effect that the temperature and pH had on the gel content ( > 94% for all samples) was negligible. The exponents of the slopes of plots of N$\_$p/ versus pH and surfactant concentration were -10 and 0.6, respectively. Particle nucleation and growth were achieved within short periods; the incessant coagulation occurred even in the presence of surfactants.
Uniform sized-porous poly(acrylonitrile-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PAN) microgels were synthesized by seed polymerization using monodisperse polystyrene seed particles. The effect of weight ratios of monomer/seed (M/S) and diluent/monomer (DIM), concentration of crosslinking agent and the type of diluent was investigated on the formation of PAN microgels. The particle size distribution of PAN microgels was found to be monodisperse in that the weight ratio of M/S is less than 50. More porous microgels were formed and the interstices between small sized interior microspheres present inside of PAN microgels were also smaller with increasing crosslinking agent concentration. Well-developed pore structure was found to be in that weight ratio of D/M is 1 and toluene is used as a diluent.
Anisotropic particles have been issued in various fields due to their unique physical properties. Herein, a novel dynamic phase separation method (DPS) is introduced to fabricate anisotropic acorn-like nanoparticles. DPS consists of two dynamic conditions; solvent evaporation and nonsolvent induced precipitation. The bottom layer is controlled by feeding the water as a non-solvent diluent, and the phase separation of the upper layer relies on the diffusion and evaporation of a volatile good solvent. At this condition, the acorn-like particles were fabricated. Under a closed box filled with water (spontaneous phase separation), monodisperse polystyrene (PS) particles were synthesized. At the coexistence between DPS and spontaneous phase separation, the sizes of cap and particle were changed. Also, the volume of PS solutions influences on the particle shape. Since the unique structures could be utilized into various applications, if advanced techniques such as membrane-based controlled water feeding is developed, monodisperse acorn-like particles could be tuned.
Monodisperse microparticles has been particularly enabling for various applications in the encapsulation and delivery of pharmaceutical agents. The microfluidic devices are attractive candidates to produce highly uniform droplets that serve as templates to form monodisperse microparticles. The microfluidic devices that have micro-scale channel allow precise control of the balance between surface tension and viscous forces in two-phase flows. One of its essential abilities is to generate highly monodisperse droplets. In this paper, a microfluidic approach for preparing monodisperse polycaprolactone (PCL) microparticles is presented. The microfluidic devices that have a flow-focusing generator are manufactured by soft-lithography using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The crucial factors in the droplet generation are the controllability of size and monodispersity of the microdroplets. For this, the volumetric flow rates of the dispersed phase of oil solution and the continuous phase of water to generate monodisperse droplets are optimized. As a result, the optimal flow condition for droplet dripping region that is able to generate uniform droplet is found. Furthermore, the droplets containing PCL polymer by solvent evaporation after collection of droplet from device is solidified to generate the microparticle. The particle size can be controlled by tuning the flow rate and the size of the microchannel. The monodispersity of the PCL particles is measured by a coefficient of variation (CV) below 5%.

Particle collection characteristics of the MOUDI cascade impactor has been studied for coarse particles in the range of 2 to 20$mu extrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter. A vibrating orifice aerosol generator was empolyed to generate monodisperse test aerosols. The oleic acid and sodium chloride(NaCl) particles were used as test aerosols. Aluminum foil and Teflon filter were selected as impaction media. The sampling flow rate was changed from 25 to 35L/min. Particle collection efficiency for single stage was examined for liquid particles. The stage response was obtained experimentally for the cascade impactor composed of three stages and a backup filter. The results showed that most of particle collection efficiencies measured in this work are similar to the efficiency curves obtained by Marple et al.(1991). For particles less than cut-off size of the stage, the collection efficiencies of solid particles are similar to those of loquid particles. However, the collection efficiency of solid particles decreases with mereasing particle diameter for the particles greater than the actual cut-off size of the impactor. The particle collection efficiency increases with increasing sampling flow rate at the same particel size. However, the collection efficiency curves seem not to be greatly shifted with the flow rate. The stage responses obtained by direct measurements in this work are in good agreement with those derived from the collection efficiency curves for single stage.
