  • Monitor height is one of the key factors in the VDT workstation design. Most of the previous studies have focused on traditional VDT workplace where the operators performed data entry or word processing tasks using single monitor. This study aimed to suggest proper monitor height when the main task was monitoring information from different number of information sources. Twelve male students participated in three experiments: single information source (one monitor), two information sources (one monitor and one CCTV), and three information sources (one monitor, one CCTV and a window). Subjects performed monitoring tasks for 10 minutes with 3 different monitor center heights : 89.0 cm (Low), 111.3 cm (Middle), and 124.8 cm (High). Surface EMG signals of five neck muscles, subjective discomfort ratings, preference, and working postures were recorded. Results indicated that the middle height was proper for one monitor condition, but the low monitor height was recommended for more than two information sources.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the personal exposure to $PM_{10}$ by body parts for the development of dust monitoring wearable device for swine farmers. Methods: Tasks were classified by using motion pictures taken by action cameras attached to swine farmers. Concentrations of $PM_{10}$ were measured by attaching direct-reading instruments at the head, neck and waist of worker. Differences of $PM_{10}$ exposure between body parts were analyzed with linear regression. Results: We identified three tasks(vaccination, moving pigs, and manure treatment). $PM_{10}$ concentration during vaccination was the highest among the tasks, and the body part showing the highest concentration of $PM_{10}$ was the waist regardless of task. In all tasks, the closer distance between the body parts, the higher were the R-squared values(vaccination 0.4221, moving pigs 0.6990, and manure treatment 0.2164). Conclusions: We presumed that $PM_{10}$ concentrations were affected by the parts of the body in which they were measured. In order to develop swine farmer's wearable device for monitoring dust concentration in air, the determination of the positions of monitoring sensor to ensure accurate measurement is essential. Considering the results of this study, wearable sensor should be positioned at the waist.

  • The theory of signal detection has been applied to a wide range of practical situation for a long time, including sonar detection, air traffic control and so on. In general, in this theory, sensitivity parametric index d' and bias parametric index $\beta$ are used to evaluated the performance of vigilance. These indices use observer's response "hit" and "false alarm" to explain and evaluate vigilance, but not considering reaction time. However, the reaction time of detecting should be considered in measuring vigilance in some supervisory tasks such as unlimited monitoring tasks (e.g., supervisors in nuclear plant). There are some researchers have used the segments of reaction time to generate a pair of probabilities of hit and false alarm probabilities and plot the receiver operating characteristic curve. The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative vigilance-measuring model by fuzzy sets, which combined the concepts of hit, false alarm and reaction time. The model extends two-values logic to multi-values logic by membership functions of fuzzy sets. A simulated experiment of monitoring task in nuclear plant was carried out. Results indicated that the new vigilance-measuring model is more efficient than traditional indices; the characteristics of vigilance would be realized more clearly in unlimited monitoring task.

  • With the help of a small wearable device, patients reside in an isolated village need constant monitoring which may increase access to care and decrease healthcare delivery cost. As the number of patients' requests increases in simultaneously manner, the web service gateway located in the village hall encounters limitations for performing them successfully and concurrently. The gateway based RESTful technology responsible for handling patients' requests attests an internet latency in case a large number of them submit toward the gateway increases. In this paper, we propose the design tasks of the web service gateway for handling concurrency events. In the procedure of designing tasks, concurrency is best understood by employing multiple levels of abstraction. The way that is eminently to accomplish concurrency is to build an object-oriented environment with support for messages passing between concurrent objects. We also investigate the performance of event-driven architecture for building web service gateway using node.js. The experiments results show that server-side JavaScript with Node.js and MongoDB as database is 40% faster than Apache Sling. With Node.js developers can build a high-performance, asynchronous, event-driven healthcare hub server to handle an increasing number of concurrent connections for Remote Healthcare Monitoring System in an isolated village with no access to local medical care.

  • In Linux, real-time tasks are supported by separating real-time task priorities from non-real-time task priorities. However, this separation of priority ranges may not be effective when real-time tasks make the system calls that are taken care of by the kernel threads. Thus, Linux is considered a soft real-time system. Moreover, kernel threads are configured to have static priorities for throughputs. The static assignment of priorities to kernel threads causes trouble for real-time tasks when real-time tasks require kernel threads to be invoked to handle the system calls because kernel threads do not discriminate between real-time and non-real-time tasks. We present a dynamic kernel thread scheduling mechanism with weighted average priority inheritance protocol (PIP), a variation of the PIP. The scheduling algorithm assigns proper priorities to kernel threads at runtime by monitoring the activities of user-level real-time tasks. Experimental results show that the algorithms can greatly improve the unexpected execution latency of real-time tasks.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the metacognitive abilities of low and middle-achievers in elementary school. Forty-nine low-and fifty middle-achieving 6th graders were selected from two elementary schools in Seoul. The tower of Hanoi with three discs was used to explore the children's abilities. The subjects were asked to move the three discs on a post to another post five times. All children's performances on the Hanoi tower were video taped. KEDI-WISC, an intelligence test was also used to see whether the children's intelligence scores affect their performances. The results showed that: (1) there was no significant difference between the two groups in the rate of success for the tasks; (2) low-achievers took more time to finish the tasks than middle-achievers, but the time difference decreased dramatically after the first trial; (3) no significant differences was found in self monitoring abilities, though the low-achievers needed more time to start monitoring themselves; (4) low-achievers had much more difficulty in representing the tasks; (5) the IQ scores of the middle-achievers were significantly higher than the low-achievers, but the IQ scores of low achievers were more scattered than those of middle-achievers; that is, IQ scores significantly affected the performance of the children.

  • Recently, due to the personalization and customization of data, Internet-based services have increased requirements for real-time processing, such as real-time AI inference and data analysis, which must be handled immediately according to the user's situation or requirement. Real-time tasks have a set deadline from the start of each task to the return of the results, and the guarantee of the deadline is directly linked to the quality of the services. However, traditional container systems are limited in operating real-time tasks because they do not provide the ability to allocate and manage deadlines for tasks executed in containers. In addition, tasks such as AI inference and data analysis basically utilize graphical processing units (GPU), which typically have performance impacts on each other because performance isolation is not provided between containers. And the resource usage of the node alone cannot determine the deadline guarantee rate of each container or whether to deploy a new real-time container. In this paper, we propose a monitoring technique for tracking and managing the execution status of deadlines and real-time GPU tasks in containers to support real-time processing of GPU tasks running on containers, and a node list management technique for container placement on appropriate nodes to ensure deadlines. Furthermore, we demonstrate from experiments that the proposed technique has a very small impact on the system.
