As ESS safety issues increase recently, there is a need to more precisely monitor the temperature of the ESS. In this paper, DTS technology for temperature monitoring of ESS batteries is introduced and the temperature measurement principle is explained. The temperature of the battery module is measured using the DTS system, and the thermal deviation between battery cells inside the battery module is analyzed. In order to analyze how thermal imbalance affects the charging and discharging performance of the battery, an accelerated degradation test was conducted. Cycle life characteristics analysis, battery surface temperature change, and AC impedance characteristics were conducted to analyze how the performance of battery cells differs according to temperature conditions.

Impedance-based damage detection method has been known as an innovative tool with various successful implementations for structural health monitoring of civil structures. To monitor the local critical area of a structure, the impedance-based method utilizes the high-frequency impedance responses sensed by piezoelectric sensors as the local dynamic features. In this paper, current advances and future challenges of the impedance-based structural health monitoring are presented. Firstly, theoretical background of the impedance-based method is outlined. Next, an overview is given to recent advances in the wireless impedance sensor nodes, the interfacial impedance sensing devices, and the temperature-effect compensation algorithms. Various research works on these topics are reviewed to share up-to-date information on research activities and implementations of the impedance-based technique. Finally, future research challenges of the technique are discussed including the applicability of wireless sensing technology, the predetermination of effective frequency bands, the sensing region of impedance responses, the robust compensation of noise and temperature effects, the quantification of damage severity, and long-term durability of sensors.
An ubiquitous healthcare monitoring system for elderly person at home was designed for continuous healthy monitoring of elderly person or patients. Human vital signals, such as ECG and body temperature, were monitored by terminal PC or PDA via ECG and temperature sensor nodes on the patient's body. From the ECG data, the heart rate, tachycardia, bradycardia and arrhythmia were diagnosed on the terminal PC or PDA to assist doctor's or nurse's aid or patient itself to monitor the patient's condition and give medical examination. Artificial judgement support system was designed in server computer and the system support a doctor or nurser for management or treatment of the patient. This system can be applied to vital signal monitoring system for solitude elderly person at self house or home health care service part. And this ubiquitous healthcare system can reduce the medical expenses in coming aging or aged society.
Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is a type of pipe corrosion in which the pipe thickness decreases depending on the fluid flow conditions. In nuclear power plants, FAC mainly occurs in the carbon steel pipes of a secondary system. However, because the temperature of a secondary system pipe is over 150 ℃, in situ monitoring using a conventional ultrasonic non-destructive testing method is difficult. In our previous study, we developed a waveguide ultrasonic thickness measurement system. In this study, we applied a waveguide ultrasonic thickness measurement system to monitor the thinning of the pipe according to the change in pH. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute installed FAC-proof facilities, enabling the monitoring of internal fluid flow conditions, which were fixed for ~1000 h to analyze the effect of the pH. The measurement system operated without failure for ~3000 h and the pipe thickness was found to be reduced by ~10% at pH 9 compared to that at pH 7. The thickness of the pipe was measured using a microscope after the experiment, and the reliability of the system was confirmed with less than 1% error. This technology is expected to also be applicable to the thickness-reduction monitoring of other high-temperature materials.

Unexpected equipment defects can cause a huge economic losses in the society at large. Although condition monitoring can provide solutions, the signal processing algorithms must be developed to predict mechanical failures using data acquired from various sensors attached to the equipment. The signal processing algorithms used in a condition monitoring requires high computing efficiency and resolution. To improve condition monitoring on a wireless sensor network(WSN), data visualization can maximize the expressions of the data characteristics. Thus, this paper proposes the extraction of visual feature from temperature data over time using condition monitoring based on a WSN to identify environmental conditions of equipment in a large-scale infrastructure. Our results show that time-frequency analysis can visually track temperature changes over time and extract the characteristics of temperature data changes.
Purpose: To continuously monitor soil and climatic properties, a data acquisition system (DAQ) was developed and tested in plum farms (Gyewol-ri and Haechang-ri, Suncheon, Korea). Methods: The DAQ consisted of a Raspberry-Pi processor, a modem, and an ADC board with multiple sensors (soil moisture content (SEN0193), soil temperature (DS18B20), climatic temperature and humidity (DHT22), and rainfall gauge (TR-525M)). In the laboratory, various tests were conducted to calibrate SEN0193 at different soil moistures, soil temperatures, depths, and bulk densities. For performance comparison of the SEN0193 sensor, two commercial moisture sensors (SMS-BTA and WT-1000B) were tested in the field. The collected field data in Raspberry-Pi were transmitted and stored on a web server database through a commercial communications wireless network. Results: In laboratory tests, it was found that the SEN0193 sensor voltage reading increased significantly with an increase in soil bulk density. A linear calibration equation was developed between voltage and soil moisture content depending on the farm soil bulk density. In field tests, the SEN0193 sensor showed linearity (R = 0.76 and 0.73) between output voltage and moisture content; however, the other two sensors showed no linearity, indicating that site-specific calibration is important for accurate sensing. In the long-term monitoring results, it was observed that the measured climate temperature was almost the same as website information. Soil temperature information was higher than the values measured by DS18B20 during spring and summer. However, the local rainfall measured using TR 525M was significantly different from the values on the website. Conclusion: Based on the test results obtained using the developed monitoring system, it is thought that the measurement of various parameters using one device would be helpful in monitoring plum growth. Field data from the local farm monitoring system can be coupled with website information from the weather station and used more efficiently.
Most of the fossil power plants firing lower grade coals are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. The poor combustion conditions are directly related to the gas flow deviation in upper furnace and convection tube-bank but a less reported issue related to in large-scale oppose wall fired boilers. In order to develop a on-line combustion monitoring system and suggest an alternative heat flux estimation method at tube bank, which is very useful information for boiler design tool and blower optimizing system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' temperature and tube metal temperature were monitored by using a spatially distributed sensors grid which located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule region. At these locations. the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. Test results showed that the flue gas monitoring method is more proper than metal temperature distribution monitoring for real time combustion monitoring because tube metal temp. distribution monitoring method is related to so many variables such as flue gas, internal flow unbalance, spray etc., Heat flux estimation at the tube bank with flue gas temp. and metal temp. data can be alternative method when tube drilling type sensor can't able to use.

Due to the fact that bare FBG sensors are very fragile, bare FBG sensor is not properly applied in practical infrastructures as it is not suitable to the rudeness of construction. Therefore packaged FBG sensors are developed for construction application. Since FBG senses strain and temperature simultaneously, temperature compensation for FBG strain sensors is indispensable. In this paper, temperature compensation techniques for steel sleeve packaged FBG sensors are brought forward. And its application on monitoring concrete beam was carried to test the feasibility of the temperature compensation technique. Temperature compensation technique used in this paper is feasible to be extended to structure health monitoring in civil engineering especially in large infrastructures etc.
It is well known that the electrical impedance of biological tissues is very sensitive to their temperature. In this paper, we have analyzed the effects of temperature change on the phase of magnetic resonance images obtained with external current injection. It has been found that the local phase in the current injected magnetic resonance image can be changed noticeably when local temperature change appears at a part of the tissue. At the experiments with a 0.3 Tesla MRI system, we observed the local phase changes at the phantom images when the phantom temperature was varied between 25 -45$^{\circ}C$. We think that the current injection MRI technique can be used for in-vivo monitoring of the temperature inside biiological tissues if the relation between the local temperature and phase can be quantified.
