The Early-age construction loading and changing properties of concrete, especially in the multi-story structures can affect the slab deflection, significantly. Based on previously conducted experiment on eight simply-supported one-way slabs this paper investigates the effect of concrete type, fiber type and content, loading value, cracking moment, ultimate moment and applied moment on the instantaneous deflection of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) slabs. Two distinct loading levels equal to 30% and 40% of the ultimate capacity of the slab section were applied on the slabs at the age of 14 days. A wide range of the existing models of the effective moment of inertia which are mainly developed for conventional concrete elements, were investigated. Comparison of the experimental deflection values with predictions of the existing models shows considerable differences between the recorded and estimated instantaneous deflection of SCC slabs. Calculated elastic deflection of slabs at the ages of 14 and 28 days were also compared with the experimental deflection of slabs. Based on sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, a new model is proposed and verified to predict the effective moment of inertia in SCC slabs with and without fiber reinforcing under two different loading levels at the age of 14 days.

Deflections of Reinforced concrete structures must satisfy the permissible values and it is hard to predict the due to uncertainty of deflection of the reinforced concrete structures. Thus, many researchers have suggested a number of experimental equation of deflection against the uncertainty. In a specification, a procedure to evaluate flexure deflection using effective moment of inertia and moment-curvature relation is suggested. ACI offers a method using effective moment of inertia, which has been developed by Branson. Eurocode 2(EC2) suggests a procedure to evaluate deflection of reinforced concrete structure using moment-curvature relation. In this paper, a series of experiments were conducted on the singly reinforced concrete beams which have the same reinforcement ratio and different concrete strength. Therefore, the effect of the concrete strength on the deflection of the beams was analysed. The deflections obtained from the experiment were compared with the deflections calculated with ACI code and EC2.
The objective of this study was to present creep and the effects of mechano-sorptive deflection of drift pin moment resisting joint between LVL members under changing relative humidity (RH) conditions. The LVL members with steel gusset were jointed by a square pattern of eight injected drift pin. Three diameter drift pins were used to test specimens (6mm, 10mm, and 16mm). The creep test was conducted under two constant loading conditions : one at 30 kgf(840 kgf-cm) and the other at 60 kgf(1680 kgf-cm). The experiment was conducted in an open shed outside. (1)The total rotation creep model of moment resisting joing can be expressed as the sum of the creep of controlled environment (3-parameter model), dimensional change and mechano-sorptive deflection resulting from the variable environment. (2)Mechanosorptive rotation creep is recoverable as moisture content increases during adsorption. Least squares method for linear regression analysis was performed using mechano-sorptive rotation creep as the dependent variable and moisture content as the independent variable. The slope of low moment specimens are compared with those of high moment. This means that low moment condition is more easily affected by changes in humidity than high moment conditions. (3)Although creep deflection is higher for small diameter drift pin than for large diameter drift pin, the shape of creep deflection curves for all specimens is similar.
This paper presents a numerical method for estimating the curvature, deflection and moment capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete encased steel composite beams (FRP-RCS). A sectional analysis is first carried out to predict the moment-curvature relationship from which beam deflection and moment capacity are then calculated. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental results of tests conducted elsewhere show that the proposed numerical technique can accurately predict moment capacity and deflection of FRP-RCS composite beam. The numerical results also indicated that beam ductility and stiffness are improved when encased steel is added to FRP reinforced concrete beams. ACI, ISIS and Bischoff models for deflection prediction compared well at low load, however, significantly underestimated the experimental results for high load levels.
The paper concerns topology and geometry optimization of statically determinate beams with arbitrary number of supports. The optimization problem is treated as a bi-criteria one, with the objectives of minimizing the absolute maximum bending moment and the maximum deflection for a uniform gravity load. The problem is formulated and solved using the Pareto optimality concept and the lexicographic ordering of the objectives. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm NSGA-II and the local search method are used for the optimization in the Pareto sense, whereas the genetic algorithm and the exhaustive search method for the lexicographic optimization. Trade-offs between objectives are examined and sets of Pareto-optimal solutions are provided for different topologies. Lexicographically optimal beams are found assuming that the maximum moment is a more important criterion. Exact formulas for locations and values of the maximum deflection are given for all lexicographically optimal beams of any topology and any number of supports. Topologies with lexicographically optimal geometries are classified into equivalence classes, and specific features of these classes are discussed. A qualitative principle of the division of topologies equivalent in terms of the maximum moment into topologies better and worse in terms of the maximum deflection is found.
A hybrid bridge deck is proposed, which includes steel bars, concrete and glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) plates with channel sections. The steel bar in the negative moment region can increase the flexural stiffness, improve the ductility, and reduce the GFRP ratio. Three continuous decks with different steel bar ratios and a simply supported deck were fabricated and tested to study the mechanical performance. The failure mode, deflection, strain distribution, cracks and support reaction were tested and discussed. The steel bar improves the mechanical performance of continuous decks, and a theoretical method is proposed to predict the deformation and the shear capacity. The experimental results show that all specimens failed with shear failure in the positive moment region. The increase of steel bar ratio in the negative moment region can achieve an enhancement in the flexural stiffness and reduce the deflection without increasing GFRP. Moreover, the continuous deck can achieve a yield load, and the negative moment can be carried by GFRP plates after the steel bar yields. Finally, a nonlinear analytical method for the deflection calculation was proposed and verified, with considering the moment redistribution, non-cracked sections and nonlinearity of material. In addition, a simplified calculation method was proposed to predict the shear capacity of GFRP-concrete decks.
Ductility is very important parameter in seismic design of RC members such as beams where it allows RC beams to dissipate the seismic energy. In this field, the curvature ductility has taken a large part of interest compared to the deflection ductility. For this reason, the present paper aims to propose a general formula for predicting the deflection ductility factor of RC beams under mid-span load. Firstly, the moment area theorem is used to develop a model in order to calculate the yield and the ultimate deflections; then this model is validated by using some results extracted from previous researches. Secondly, a general formula of deflection ductility factor is written based on the developed deflection expressions. The new formula is depended on curvature ductility factor, beam length, and plastic hinge length. To facilitate the use of this formula, a parametric study on the curvature ductility factor is conducted in order to write it in simple manner without the need for curvature calculations. Therefore, the deflection ductility factor can be directly calculated based on beam length, plastic hinge length, concrete strength, reinforcement ratios, and yield strength of steel reinforcement. Finally, the new formula of deflection ductility factor is compared with the model previously developed based on the moment area theorem. The results show the good performance of the new formula.
This investigation is aimed to develop a model of experimental-computation determination of a support moment of a cantilever beam loaded with concentrated force at its end including the optimal choice of coordinates of deflection data points and parameters of transformation of deflection data in case of insufficient accuracy of the assignment of initial parameters (support settlement, angle of rotation of the bearing section) and cantilever beam length. The influence of distribution and characteristics of sensors on the cantilever beam on the accuracy of determining the support moment which improves in the course of transition from the uniform distribution of sensors to optimal non-uniform distribution is shown. On the basis of the theory of inverse problems the method of transformation reduction at numerical differentiation of deflection functions has been studied. For engineering evaluation formulae of uncertainty estimate to determine a support moment of a cantilever beam at predetermined uncertainty of measurements using sensors have been obtained.
Stress relaxation behaviors of the cucumber under bending moment were tested with UTM at three levels of loading rate and initial deflection ratio. Sample cucumber was selected from three cultivars of cucumber, Cheongjangmadi, Baekdadagi, and Gyeousalicheongjang, because these cultivars are the most popular grown cultivars in Korea. When the bending moment was applied to the cucumber sample, the effective span between simple supports was held a constant value of 116mm with consideration of the selected sample length. The objectives of this study were to develop the rheological models such as linear and nonlinear models of the stress relaxation for the cucumber samples, and to investigate the effects of loading rate and initial deflection ratio on the stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber. The results of this study may be summarized as follows : 1. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber could be well described by the generalized Maxwell model for each level of deflection ratio. But the stress relaxation behavior of the sample was found to be initial deflection ratio and time dependent, and it was represented the nonlinear viscoelastic model as a function of initial deflection ratio and time. 2. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber samples was very highly affected by the loading rate and the initial deflection ratio. The more loading rate and initial deflection ratio resulted in the more initial bending stress and after stress relaxation progressed more rapidly. 3. At the same test conditions, it was found that the stress relaxation rate of Cheongjangmadi was faster than that of other cultivars.
When the static load is applied to the ship's hull the deflection due to the bending moment from longitudinal direction has not been considered in the usual calculation of maximum bending moment. In fact, however, the deflection of ship's hull must be affected by the above-stated bending moment, and in this case the value of the maximum bending moment would be lessened in comparision with the result of usual calculation. In this paper, the author at first calculated the difference between the two values in case of rectangular barge, and suggested a practical criterion of longitudinal strength.
