In this study, the effects of chill layers occurred in shot sleeve on the molten metal filling were analyzed through computer simulation and the behavior of chill layers with temperature variation of shot sleeve set from 200 to $280^{\circ}C$ was also investigated. The simulation results showed the chill layers set in the in-gates during the injection process change the main filling direction and cause turbulent flow pattern, resulting in porosities inside the castings. The amount of chill layers with the increasing temperature of shot sleeve was considerably reduced. And particularly, at the setting temperature of $280^{\circ}C$ by heat control unit, the big reduction in chill layers, excellent trimmed surface and the highest densification were achieved, suggesting that as the optimal sleeve condition in diecasting, especially for the highly complex parts like valve body.
Al2O3/metal composites were fabricated by oxidation and reaction of molten Al-alloy into two types of commercial Al2O3-SiO2 fibrous insulation board. The growth rate, composition and microstructure of these materials were described. An AlZnMg(7075) alloy was selected as a parent alloy. Mixed polycrystalline fiber and glass phase fiber were used as a filler. The growth surface of an alloy was covered with and without SiO2. SiO2 powder was employed as a surface dopant to aid initial oxidation of Al-alloy. Al-alloy, SiO2, fiber block and growth inhibitor CaSiO3 were packed sequentially in a alumina crucible and oxidized in air at temperature range 90$0^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of composite layer was calculated by measuring the mass increasement(g) per unit surface($\textrm{cm}^2$). XRD and optical microscope were used to investigate the composition and phase of composites. The composite grown at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and with SiO2 dopant showed rapid growth rate. The growth behavior differed a little depending on the types of fiber used. The composites consist of $\alpha$-Al2O3, Al, Si and pore. The composite grown at 100$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited better microstructure compared to that grown at 120$0^{\circ}C$.
The effect of wheel surface condition on solidification behavior of Al-Cu ribbon was investigated in order to establish extreme levels of heat extraction. The condition of wheel surface was changed either by heating the wheel surface up to $200^{\circ}C$ or by coating boron nitride(BN) onto the the rim of a wheel. Heating the wheel surface up to $200^{\circ}C$ improved the wetting behavior between the molten metal and the rotating wheel, leading to an increase in the ratio of columnar structure to the entire thickness of Al-4.3wt%Cu and Al-33.2wt%Cu ribbons. For Al-4.3wt%Cu ribbon, assuming one grain as a single heterogeneous nucleation event at the contact point, the nucleation density with the wheel surface heated to $200^{\circ}C$, was $4{\times}10^6/mm^2$, and in the cases of BN coating with thin and thick layers, $10^5/mm^2$ and $5{\times}10^4/mm^2$, respectively. The largest cooling capacity of the wheel corresponded to the heated wheel surface, and as the thickness of BN coating layer increased, the cooling capacity of the wheel gradually decreased.
External reactor vessel cooling (ERVC) for in-vessel retention (IVR) has been considered one of the most useful strategies to mitigate severe accidents. However, reliability of this common idea is weakened because many studies were focused on critical heat flux whereas there were diverse uncertainties in structural behaviors as well as thermal-hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, several key factors related to molten corium behaviors and thermal characteristics were examined under multi-layered corium formation conditions. Thereafter, systematic finite element analyses and subsequent damage evaluation with varying parameters were performed on a representative reactor pressure vessel (RPV) to figure out the possibility of high temperature induced failures. From the sensitivity analyses, it was proven that the reactor cavity should be flooded up to the top of the metal layer at least for successful accomplishment of the IVR-ERVC strategy. The thermal flux due to corium formation and the relocation time were also identified as crucial parameters. Moreover, three-layered corium formation conditions led to higher maximum von Mises stress values and consequently shorter creep rupture times as well as higher damage factors of the RPV than those obtained from two-layered conditions.

A newly designed Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in a quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction (W-tip-Quartz- REF) was fabricated and its electrochemical performance was compared with a conventional Pyrex tube-based Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode (Py-REF). The results of the electrochemical potential measurements with the W-tip-Quartz- REF and the Py-REF in the LiCl-KCl eutectic melts for a wide temperature range proved that the oxide layer on the surface of the tungsten metal tip provided a high ionic conduction. Stability of our newly designed W-tip- Quartz-REF was tested by measuring a junction potential for 12 hours at 700${^{\circ}C}$. The results of the cyclic voltammetric measurement indicated that the Ag/$Ag^+$ reference electrode in the quartz tube with a tungsten tip junction can provide a good performance for a wide temperature range.

In the present work, an electrowinning process in the LiCl-KCl/Cd system is considered to model and analyze the electrotransport of the actinide and rare-earth elements. A simple dynamic modeling of this process was performed by taking into account the material balances and diffusion-controlled electrochemical reactions in a diffusion boundary layer at an electrode interface between the molten salt electrolyte and liquid cadmium cathode. The proposed modeling approach was based on the half-cell reduction reactions of metal chloride occurring on the cathode. This model demonstrated a capability for the prediction of the concentration behaviors, a faradic current of each element and an electrochemical potential as function of the time up to the corresponding electrotransport satisfying a given applied current based on a galvanostatic electrolysis. The results of selected case studies including five elements (U, Pu, Am, La, Nd) system are shown, and a preliminary simulation is carried out to show how the model can be used to understand the electrochemical characteristics and provide better information for developing an advanced electrowinner.
The reaction of Cu metal with mixed alkali metal polyselenide flux ($KNaSe_x$) produced large plate-like crystals of $KCu_4Se_3$. The structure of $KCu_4Se_3$, determined with X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques, is tetragonal (P4/mmm, a=4.013(1))${\AA}$, c=9.712(1))${\AA}$, z=1, R=6.7%). The structure is composed $[Cu_4Se_3]_n^{n-}$double layers which are made of fused anti PbO-type Cu2Se2 layers. Temperature variable resistivity measurement on single crystal of $KCu_4Se_3$ shows metallic behavior ranging from $1.8{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ (at 300 K) to $1.0{\times}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ (at 20 K).
The curved blocks which compose the bow and stem of a ship contain many skewed joints that are inclined horizontally and vertically. Most of these joints have a large fitness error and are continuously changing their form and are not easily accessible. The welding position and parameter values should be appropriately set in correspondence to the shape and the inclination of the joints. The welding parameters such as current, voltage, travel speed, and melting rate, are related to each other and their values must be in a specific limited range for the sound welding. These correlations and the ranges are dependent up on the kind and size of wire, shielding gas, joint shape and fitness. To determine these relationships, extensive welding experiments were performed. The experimental data were processed using several information processing technologies. The regression method was used to determine the relationship between current voltage, and deposition rate. When a joint is inclined, the weld bead should be confined to a the limited size, inorder to avoid undercut as well as overlap due to flowing down of molten metal by gravity. The dependency of the limited weld size which is defined as the critical deposited area on various factors such as the horizontally and vertically inclined angle of the joint, skewed angle of the joint, up or down welding direction and weaving was investigated through a number of welding experiments. On the basis of this result, an ANN system was developed to estimate the critical deposited area. The ANN system consists of a 4 layer structure and uses an error back propagation learning algorithm. The estimated values of the ANN were validated using experimental values.

We investigated the effect of polymer sublayer on volumetric resistivity and tensile strength of carbon fiber (CF)/polyethylene composite films fabricated under high intensity electric fields. The dependence of volumetric resistivity and tensile strength of the films on the polymer sublayer thickness or mass part exhibited complex behavior according to CF content and CF layer density in the films. As the thickness of polymer sublayer increases, two groups of processes at thermo-mechanical forming stage would take effects in the properties of the films. The first group comprises the increase of polymer layer thickness having reduced CF content compared with central or upper part of the film and insufficient wetting of CF resulting in the loosened structure near upper film side. The second group, on the other hand, is the improvement of mobility of molten sublayer leading to better distribution of CF throughout the film thickness and the formation of more compact structure. The different degree of contribution of these two competing processes at varied CF content and CF layer density could explain complex dependence of the film properties on the polymer sublayer. These results are important to optimize the electrical and mechanical properties of highly conductive polymer films, which can be used as electromagnetic interference shielding materials.

The platinum anode for the electrolytic reduction process is generally surrounded by a nonporous ceramic shroud with an open bottom to offer a path for $O_2$ gas produced on the anode surface and prevent the corrosion of the electrolytic reducer. However, the $O^{2-}$ ions generated from the cathode are transported only in a limited fashion through the open bottom of the anode shroud because the nonporous shroud hinders the transport of the $O^{2-}$ ions to the anode surface, which leads to a decrease in the current density and an increase in the operation time of the process. In the present study, we demonstrate the electrolytic reduction of 1 kg-uranium oxide ($UO_2$) using the porous shroud to investigate its long-term stability. The $UO_2$ with the size of 1~4mm and the density of $10.30{\sim}10.41g/cm^3$ was used for the cathode. The platinum and 5-layer STS mesh were used for the anode and its shroud, respectively. After the termination of the electrolytic reduction run in 1.5 wt.% $Li_2O-LiCl$ molten salt, it was revealed that the U metal was successfully converted from the $UO_2$ and the anode and its shroud were used without any significant damage.
