In steel-making processes of iron and steel industry, the purity and quality of steel can be dependent on the amount of CO contained in the molten metal. Recently, the supersonic oxygen jet is being applied to the molten metal in the electric furnace and thus reduces the CO amount through the chemical reactions between the oxygen jet and molten metal, leading to a better quality of steel. In this application, the supersonic oxygen jet is limited in the distance over which the supersonic velocity is maintained. In order to get longer supersonic jet propagation into the molten metal, a supersonic coherent jet is suggested as one of the alternatives which are applicable to the electric furnace system. It has a flame around the conventional supersonic jet and thus the entrainment effect of the surrounding gas into the supersonic jet is reduced, leading to a longer propagation of the supersonic jet. The objective of the present study is to investigate the supersonic coherent jet flow. A computational study is carried out to solve the compressible, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The computational results of the supersonic coherent jet are compared with the conventional supersonic jet.

In this regard, gasdynamics mechanism about why the combustion phenomenon surrounding the supersonic jet causes the jet core length to be longer is not yet clarified. The present study investigates the major characteristics of the supersonic coherent jet, compared with the conventional supersonic jet. A computational study is carried out to solve the compressible, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The simulated die-casting process in which the traditional plaster casting process is combined with Rapid Prototyping technology is being used to produce Al, Mg, and Zn die-casting prototypes. Unlike in the die-casting process, molten metal in the conventional plaster casting process is fed via a gravity pour into a mold and the mold does not cool as quickly as a die-casting mold. The plaster castings have much larger and grosser grain structure as compared as the die-castings and the thin walls of the plaster mold cavity may not be completely fillet Because of lower mechanical properties induced by the large grain structure and incomplete Idling, the conventional plaster casting process is not suitable for the trial die-casting Process. In this work, an enhanced trial die-casting process has been developed in which molten metal in the plaster mold cavity is vibrated and pressurized simultaneously. Patterns for the casting are made by Rapid Prototyping technologies and then plaster molds, which have runner system, are made using these patterns. Imparted pressurized vibration to molten metal has made grain structure of castings much finer and improved fluidity of the molten metal enough to obtain complete filling at thin walls which can not be filled in the conventional plaster casting process.
In this study, a device was used to conduct heat to the riser by combining a cylindrical heater with the riser to maintain the molten metal above a certain temperature while continuously compensating for the shrinkage phenomenon that occurs as the molten metal solidifies in the product area. A cylindrical heater is coupled to the riser portion of the upper part of the upper mold, and a heater portion mold is formed between the riser and the cylindrical heater. The cylindrical heater is connected to a controller to control the temperature and a power supply. The cylindrical heater conducts a heat source to the molten metal located on the riser and can continuously compensate for the shrinkage of the cast product by heating the molten metal located on the riser or maintaining it at a constant temperature. The block without a riser had a large shrinkage cavity at the top, and the top became concave due to shrinkage. There is no shrinkage in the block with the Ø100 mm riser. Blocks that did not apply heaters to the Ø50 mm riser experienced shrinkage around the riser and also at the bottom. There is no shrinkage in the block with the Ø50 mm riser to which the heater was applied.
Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) is a new additive process producing three-dimensional metal components or tools directly from CAD data, which aims to take mold making and metalworking in an entirely new direction. It is the blending of five common technologies: lasers, CAD, CAM, sensors and materials. In the resulting process, alternatively called laser cladding, an industrial laser is used to locally heat a spot on a tool-steel work piece or platform, forming a molten pool of metal. A small stream of powdered tool-steel metal is then injected into the metal pool to increase the size of the molten pool. By moving the laser beam back and forth, under CNC control, and tracing out a pattern determined by a computerized CAD design, the solid metal part is eventually built line-by-line, one layer at a time. DMD produces improved material properties in less time and at a lower cost than is possible with traditional fabrication technologies.
The purpose of this study is to prepare a high-strength Fiberglass Reinforced Metal (FRM). Aluminum covering over carbon fibers (CF) was made to increase their wettability to molten aluminum. A cylindrical sputtering apparatus was used for the covering. One tow of carbon fibers was placed along the central axis of the cylindrical target. Aluminum was uniformly coated around the carbon fiber tow. But in case of CF without sizing treatment, aluminum spread into the inside of the tow. Preforms of carbon fiber/aluminum composite were made by impregnating carbon fiber with molten aluminum. Contact angle of molten aluminum to the aluminum-coated carbon fiber was about $30^{\circ}$. The fractured section of preform was observed by SEM, which showed that molten aluminum wetted the outer part of the tow well but had not penetrated into the center, and that adhesion between CF and aluminum matrix was in good condition.
In the steel industries, direct rolling process for production of strip from molten metal has been investigated to simplify processes, to minimize energy consumption, and to improve quality of the strip. In this study, two kinds of practicable scale cooling rollers are proposed. And heat transfer analysis of pool region and cooling roller considering flow of molten metal and roll rotation respectively using the finite element method are performed to obtain the proper initial condition and to observe cooling characteristics of cooling roller. From the results, variations of solidification final points and temperature distribution in roller are observed quantitatively according to roll rotation.
This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.
