  • Aluminum source in an Al-Fe coating reacts with molten carbonate and develops a protective $LiAlO_2$ layer on the coating surface during operation of molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC). However, if aluminum content in an Al-Fe coating decreases to a critical level for some reasons during MCFC operation, a stable and continuous $LiAlO_2$ protective layer can no longer be maintained. The aluminum content in an Al-Fe coating can be depleted by two different processes; one is by corrosion reaction at the surface between the aluminum source in the coating and molten carbonate, and the other is inward-diffusion of aluminum atoms within the coating into a substrate. In these two respects, therefore, the decreasing rate of aluminum concentration in an Al-Fe coating was measured, and then the influences of these two aspects on the lifetime of Al-Fe coating were investigated, respectively.

  • The performance of fuel cell/gas turbine hybrid systems is highly affected by system configuration. In this study, the performance of a hybrid system combining a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and an indirectly fired gas turbine was predicted. Firstly, general performance trends of the hybrid system depending on major design parameters were examined. Then, the most feasible design options with the least impact on the MCFC stack design conditions were drawn. The economic advantage of the hybrid system over the basic MCFC only system was evaluated.

  • Integration of various bottoming cycles such as the gas turbine (GT) cycle, organic Rankine cycle, and oxy-fuel combustion cycle with an molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) power-generation system was analyzed, and the performance of the power-generation system in the three cases were compared. Parametric analysis of the three different integrated systems was carried out under conditions corresponding to the practical use and operation of MCFC, and the optimal design condition for each system was derived. The MCFC/oxy-combustion system exhibited the greatest power upgrade from the MCFC-only system, while the MCFC/GT system showed the greatest efficiency enhancement.

  • Fuel cells are currently attracting tremendous interest because of their huge potential in stationary applications, in terms of substantiality of our energy use. They also offer environmental advantages, combining significantly higher efficiency with very much lower emission of SOx, NOx, and residual hydrocarbons, and significantly reduced $CO_{2}$ emissions compared to conventional power generation. The molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) was introduced from Fuel Cell Energy(FCE), which the one MCFC was operating by LNG and the other was operating by ADG. The ADG contains normally CH4, CO2 and various impurities such as sulfur compounds and siloxanes. Using the ADG as a fuel, MCFC have the potential to provide significant environmental and economic benefits. However, such impurities would be harmful to fuel cells. In this work, a purification process for the ADG was designed and installed in order to utilize the gas as a fuel for MCFC.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out for the electrochemical reaction, mass and heat transfer characteristics of the Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) stack. The effects of cooling air channel and water gas shift reaction were taken into account. The current density distribution of electrodes, the molecular fractions of reactant gasses and three dimensional temperature distribution can be calculated and shown by several lines of equivalent values. The results have been compared with the existing ones, and reasonable agreement has been obtained. To examine the influence of changing parameters, such as the composition of reactant gases, the target average current density, the utilization of reactant gases, the cooling air inlet temperature and flow rates, the computer simulation has been done. The analysis method and computer program developed in this study will be greatly helpful to design and verify the optimum operating condition of MCFC stack.

  • Metallic bipolar plate for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of the shielded slot plate and the center plate. Among these, the center plate plays an important role in gas sealing. Therefore, manufacturing of the center plate is considered one of the key issues in MCFC. The center plate is manufactured by bending process. In bending process, springback and recoiling are two main problems. By using the modified punch shape with 'step', springback and recoil are reduced. The aim of this article is to find the effect of modified punch shape. So, the bending stress along thickness direction and material direction were investigated using FEM.

  • The Tancheon wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) in Seoul using anaerobic digestion to reduce the outlet sludge produces anaerobic digester gas which contains 65% $CH_4$ and 35% $CO_2$. The gas purification equipment was installed and operated to use Anaerobic Digester Gas(ADG) as a fuel for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC). The processes consist of the desulfurizer and the adsorption tower to remove $H_2S$ and siloxane in the gas. The gas purification equipment removed virtually over 95% of $H_2S$ and over 99% of siloxane. Results has demonstrated that the fuel cell can produce electrical output and hot water with negligible air emissions of CO, NOx and $SO_2$. The site provides the first opportunity in Korea for demonstrating Molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) which the digester gas was applied to the fuel gas.

  • Temperature characteristics in a stack of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) have been investigated with simulation based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes and experimental way. The MCFC has generally two stack structures when the natural gas is used as fuel; one is the external reforming type and the other is internal reforming type. Computer simulation at the external reforming stack suggests that the maximum temperature in the stack depends on the gas flow length. The 2 kW MCFC stack with 25 cm gas flow length showed about $675^\circ{C}$ of maximum temperature.
