Melanoidins, which were higher polymers with intense brown color, were investigated on their decolorization and degradation by ozonolysis. Amino acids linked up with melanoidins were readily separated by depolymerization of melanoidins with ozonolysis. The IR spectra of ozone-untreated MRPs showed a higher peak at $1665cm^{-1}$ (C=N) and $1600cm^{-1}$ (C=C) than the corresponding peaks of ozone-treated MRPs. Ozone-treated melanoidins with molecular weight of above 900 showed the highest nitrogen composition of all melanoidins tested. Ozone-treated melanoidins with molecular weight of 900 to 1000 were separated into five peaks on recycling preparative HPLC chromatogram. Major functional groups in ozone-treated melanoidins with molecular weight of 900 to 1, 000 were -CH$_2$-CO-, -CH$_2$-O- and CH$_2$-.

Chitosan is a useful natural polymer material in many application fields such as biomaterials, water-treatment, agriculture, medication, and food science. However, the poor solubility limits its application. In this study, the effects of radiation on chitosan were investigated using gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. The chemical structure and molecular weight analysis show similar degradation effects of chitosan powder in both gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. However, the radiation irradiated chitosan in $H_2O$ has a lower molecular weight, since the hydroxyl radicals attack the glycosidic bonds. This effect is more clearly shown in the electron beam irradiation results.
Results of isothermal torsional oscillation tests are reported on melts of linear low density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene. Prior to rheological tests, specimens were annealed at various temperatures ranging from $T_a$ = 180 to $310^{\circ}C$ for various amounts of time (from 30 to 120 min). Thermal treatment induced degradation of the melts and caused pronounced decreases in their molecular weights. With reference to the concept of transient networks, constitutive equations are developed for the viscoelastic response of polymer melts. A melt is treated as an equivalent network of strands bridged by junctions (entanglements and physical cross-links). The time-dependent response of the network is modelled as separation of active strands from and merging of dangling strands with temporary nodes. The stress-strain relations involve three adjustable parameters (the instantaneous shear modulus, the average activation energy for detachment of active strands, and the standard deviation of activation energies) that are determined by matching the dependencies of storage and loss moduli on frequency of oscillations. Good agreement is demonstrated between the experimental data and the results of numerical simulation. The study focuses on the effect of molecular weight of polymer melts on the material constants in the constitutive equations.
Purpose : UHMWPE (Ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene) is one of the most widely used material in knife protection clothes because of high strength, elasticity, and light weight. The purpose of this study is to develop the accelerated life test method and predict the lifetime for the knife protection fabric composed by UHMWPE. Methods : In this study, degradation characteristics of UHMWPE fibers and knife protection fabric for cut resistance were evaluated under the hydrolysis and photo-degradation conditions. It was found out that the degradation rate of retained tensile strength was more significant in the photo-degradation than hydrolysis. Therefore, the failure time was determined as the time that the retained tensile strength in photo-degradation is less than 50%. Considering an acceleration factor for irradiance and exposure time, the lifetime was predicted from the calculated failure time. Results : As a result of the accelerated life test, the $B_{10}$ lifetime of knife protection fabric composed by UHMWPE fibers is estimated as 2.8 years for a 90% statistical confidence level. Conclusion: Since the lifetime is predicted by the view-point of radiant exposure in this study, there is a possibility that the estimated lifetime may differ from the actual lifetime. However, it is considered as an useful methodology to estimate the long-term lifetime of knife protection fabrics.
Various cell wall polysaccharides and related enzyme activities in hot pepper fruit were determined at different stages of maturity. The uronic acid content of cell walls decreased between immature green and turning stage fruit and then increased by red ripe stage. In contrast, cellulose content of cell walls changed only a little during ripening. Total neutal sugar content of cell wall material decreased 50% and galactose content of the walls decreased about 80% by the turning stage. Polygalacturonase and ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activities, as well as total hemicellulose from isolated cell walls of ripening hot pepper fruit were studied using gel filtration chromatography. Polygalacturonase activity was not detectable but 5 isozymes of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ were resolved. The activities of the enzymes were relatively high and gel filtration showed that they differed in molecular weight. Hemicellulose content decreased during ripening and softening. The molecular weight profiles shifted from high molecular weight to low molecular weight polymers during ripening. The changes in cell walls that may be associated with fruit softening involve the alteration of hemicellulose prior to the degradation of wall-bound uronic acid. It is suggested that the decrease in cell wall galactose involved changes in turnover of new cell wall components.
