  • Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films were fabricated on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate by the sol-gel method using a sol containing poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). PVP in alkoxide solutions can suppress the condensation reaction in gel films during heat treatment, and increase the viscosity of alkoxide solutions. Single-phase PZT films as thick as 1 ${\mu}m$ were deposited by repetitive coating with successive third-step heat treatments at 150$^{\circ}C$, 350$^{\circ}C$ and 650$^{\circ}C$. After heat treatment, the films were crack free, and optically transparent. As a result, we demonstrated a PZT film with a PVP molar ratio of 0.5, which has a permittivity of 734, a dielectric loss of 0.042, a $P_r$ of 40.5 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ and an $E_c$ of 156 kV/cm.

  • Actinomycosis is chronic, granulomatous, suppurative and fibrosing disease caused by Actinomyces. Actinomyces are anaerobic, G(+), non-acid-fast, branched, filamentous bacteria. The most commonly found microorganism is Actinomyces israelii. Common site for isolation of actinomyces are dental plaque, dental caries, calculus, and tonsillar crypt. A breach in the integrity of the mucosa by direct trauma or following a fracture, tooth extraction, root canal therapy or some intraoral surgical procedure is thought to be the most likely portal of entry. This is a case report of 23 years old male with cervicofacial actinomycosis developed after extraction and treated with surgical excision and antibiotics.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the histopathological pattern of cysts. We reviewed the hospital chart, out-patient chart, roentgenogram, histopathologic report and operation report of 152 patients who had been diagnosed as cyst and treated at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Korea university hospital between Jan. 1, 1995 and Dec. 31, 1998. And then we studied clinically with regard to pathological classification, age and sex distribution, anatomical distribution and so on. The results were as follows : 1. In pathologic classification, radicular cyst (97cases, 64%), dentigerous cyst (35cases, 23%), odontogenic keratocyst (8cases, 5.3%) were dominant among cases of cyst. 2. The pattern of age distribution in cases of radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratocyst was similar to that found in previous studies. The peak incidence was in the second decade (27%) and third decade (29%) in overall cases. 3. The male-to-female ratio was 1.9 : 1. 4. Radicular cyst occured most frequently in the maxillary incisor teeth area, dentigerous cyst in mandibular wisdom teeth area, and odontogenic keratocyst in mandibular molar area.

  • Numb chin syndrome, or mental neuropathy is a rare sensory neuropathy characterized by abnormal sensation such as hypoesthesia, paresthesia, or dysesthesia in the chin and lower lip innervated by the mental nerve. Sensory neuropathy of mental nerve is somewhat familiar to dentists because it can occur following nerve damage by trauma or dental treatment such as implant surgery or third molar extraction. It can also result from dental causes including abscess or osteomyelitis. However, it can be the first sign of the systemic disease or malignancy if it is not related to dental causes. In this study, we present the case of a patient who present with hypoesthesia and pain in chin area without other symptoms and is later diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the clinical features and treatment results on 55 temporomandibular disorder patients who had treated by conservative treatment using occlusal splint. The results were as follows; 1. The ratio of men to women was about 1:2.2 and most of the patients were second and third decades. 2. Pain was the most frequent symptom, followed by clicking and mouth opening limitation. 3. The number of acute and chronic groups on the basis of 6 months duration of symptoms were similar. 4. Most of patients had Angle's Class 1 molar relationships(78.2%), followed by Class 3 and Class 2. 5. Centric Relation splints were used alone for treatment of 34 patients and 21 patients were treated with Centric Relation splints and Anterior Repositioning splints. The treatment duration of the patients who had complained pain was average 9.8 weeks and 6 patients of them had slight pain continuously during follow-up. 6. Eleven patient's maximum mouth opening who had mouth opening limitation was improved from 30. 7mm to 43.0mm during procedures.

  • Dentigerous cysts are the most common type of developmental odontogenic cysts. They form as a result of a separation of the follicle from around the crown of an unerupted tooth. Usually this lesion can be asymptomatic. Such cysts are often discovered accidently on inspection of x-rays. In other advanced cases, cortical bone expansion, displacement of teeth, secondary infection can be observed. The treatment of dentigerous cyst is enucleation. And according to size, location of lesion and environmental structure marsupialization can be considered. However, Marsupialization takes long treatment time and, cystic tissues are remained so secondary surgery may be needed for total removal., Risks of oroantral fistula, damage on maxillary sinus wall and infraorbital nerve can be considered as complications of conventional surgical treatment of cysts located in maxillary sinus. We treated third molar origin dentogerous cyst located in maxillary sinus removing endoscopically both the tooth and an associated dentigerous cyst. We report our clinical experience with literature review.

  • Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of autogenous fresh demineralized tooth (auto-FDT) graft prepared at the chairside for alveolar bone grafting during dental implant surgery. Methods: In total, 38 patients requiring both tooth extraction (for endodontic or periodontal reasons or third molar extraction) and alveolar bone regeneration for dental implant placement were included. Within 2 h after clean extraction, the teeth were prepared at the chairside to serve as bone graft material. In the same sitting, blocks or chips of this graft material were used to reconstruct defects at the osteotomy site simultaneously with or before implant placement. Twelve months after prosthesis fabrication and placement, the clinical findings and implant success rates were evaluated. Histological studies were randomly conducted for selected cases. Results: Clinical evaluation showed favorable wound healing with minimal complications and good bone support for the implants. No implant was lost after 12 months of function following prosthetic rehabilitation. Histological examination revealed new bone formation induced by the graft material. Conclusions: Chairside preparation of autogenous fresh demineralized teeth after extraction can be a useful alternative to the use of autogenous bone or other graft materials for the immediate reconstruction of alveolar bone defects to facilitate subsequent implant placement.

  • An in vitro study was performed in order to evaluate the restoring methods in the endodontically treated molar teeth. 68 extracted teeth were divided into 4 groups according to the restoring techniques. The teeth of first group were restored by amalgam. Those of second group were restored by the stainless steel post and amalgam. The teeth of the third group were restored by the amalgam with crown. The teeth of the fourth group were restored by the stainless steel post and amalgam core with crown. All the specimens were tested and measured for the fracture load by means of the Instron (UTM-111-500 Toyo Baldwin Co., LTD. Japan) and the Pressure Instrument (Yonsei University, Department of Metal Engineering.) The results were as follows; 1. There were no statistical differences in the fracture loads between the amalgam restoration and post-amalgam core restorative techniques. 2. The techniques of amalgam core with crown showed lower fracture loads those of post and amalgam core with crown. 3. In the crowned teeth, they presented higher fracture loads than those without crown.

  • A 27-year-old female was referred to our hospital postpartum due to rapid aggravation of facial swelling. She was diagnosed with osteomyelitis on clinical, radiological, and histopathological examinations, but the possibility of malignancy was not excluded. Clinical signs and symptoms such as facial swelling and discomfort were improved with four months of antibiotics treatment. This is as case of an osteomyelitis progressed from infected extraction socket in a woman with physiological changes of pregnancy. Decreased immunological response, increased sex hormone and calcium regulatory hormones regulate the response of the bone infection. We report this case for helping the diagnosis of unusual from of osteomyelities in pregnancy and postpartum.
