This study is the result between the variation of fuel moisture and the risk of forest fire through measuring the change of moisture containing ratio on-site and its average analysis for each diameter of surface dead fuels in the forest. The measurement was performed on six days from the day after a rainfall. The fuel moisture on-site was measured on the day when the accumulated rainfall was above 5.0mm, and the measurements was 2 times in spring. From the pine forest which were distributed around Samcheok and Donghae in Kangwondo, three regions were selected by loose, medium, and dense forest density, and the fuel moisture was measured on the ranges which are less than 0.6cm, 0.6-3.0cm, 3.0-6.0cm, and more than 6.0cm in the forest for six days from the day after a rainfall. The study showed that the moisture containing ratio converged on 3 - 4 days for surface deads fuels which diameter are less than 3.0cm and the convergence was made more than six days for ones which diameters are more than 3.0cm except the surface dead fuel of 3.0-6.0cm diameter of loose forest density.
A spectral formalism was applied to quantify the sampling errors due to spatial and/or temporal gaps in soil moisture measurements. The lack of temporal measurements of the two-dimensional soil moisture field makes it difficult to compute the spectra directly from observed records. Therefore, the space-time soil moisture spectra derived by stochastic models of rainfall and soil moisture was used in their record. Parameters for both models were tuned with Southern Great Plains Hydrology Experiment(SGP'97) data and the Oklahoma Mesonet data. The structure of soil moisture data is discrete in space and time. A design filter was developed to compute the sampling errors for discrete measurements in space and time. This filter has the advantage in its general form applicable for all kinds of sampling designs. Sampling errors of the soil moisture estimation during the SGP'97 Hydrology Experiment period were estimated. The sampling errors for various sampling designs such as satedlite over pass and point measurement ground probe were estimated under the climate condition between June and August 1997 and soil properties of the SGP'97 experimental area. The ground truth design was evaluated to 25km and 50km spatial gap and the temporal gap from zero to 5 days.
Soil moisture content is generally accepted as an important factor to understand the process of crop growth and is the basis of earth system models for analysis and prediction of the crop condition. To continuously monitor soil moisture changes at kilometer scale, it is demanded to create high resolution data from the current, several tens of kilometers. In this paper we described a downscaling method for Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) Soil Moisture Content (SMC) from 10 km to 30 m resolution using a soil texture and field measurements that have a high correlation with the SMC. As a result, the soil moisture variations of both data (before and after downscaling) were identical, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of SMC exhibited the low values. Also, time series analyses showed that three kinds of SMC data (field measurement, original AMSR2, and downscaled AMSR2) had very similar temporal variations. Our method can be applied to downscaling of other soil variables and can contribute to monitoring small-scale changes of soil moisture by providing high resolution data.
This study analyzed water quality data from a coniferous forest catchment in order to quantify the contributions of runoff components to stormflow, and to understand the effects of antecedent moisture conditions within catchment on the contributions of runoff components. Hydrograph separation by the twocomponent mixing model analysis was used to partition stormflow discharge into pre-event and event components for total 10 events in 2005 and 2008. To simplify the analysis, this study used single geochemical tracer with Na+. The result shows that the average contributions of event water and pre-event water were 34.8% and 65.2% of total stormflow of all 10 events, respectively. The event water contributions for each event varied from 18.8% to 47.9%. As the results of correlation analysis between event water contributions versus some storm event characteristics, 10 day antecedent rainfall and 1 day antecedent streamflow are significantly correlated with event water contributions. These results can provide insight which will contribute to understand the importance of antecedent moisture conditions in the generation of event water, and be used basic information to stormflow generation process in forest catchment.
Differential interferometric phases from JERS-1 Lband data sets show spatial variation of path-length ranging from a few mm to several cm. The variation may be caused by changes in soil moisture contents, i.e. variation of penetration depth and the swelling of soils. Although the amount of total effect caused by soil moisture is not measurable, it is clear that the soil moisture according to precipitation is another factor to be considered in DInSAR analysis. We also discuss DInSAR characteristics in a rice paddy according to irrigation conditions, and discrimination of hydrological features such as stream channels and watershed boundaries by applying DInSAR technique.
This paper presents an integrated procedure to predict the temperature and moisture distributions in hardening concrete considering the effects of temperature and aging. The degree of hydration is employed as a fundamental parameter to evaluate hydro-thermal-mechanical properties of hardening concrete. The temperature history and temperature distribution in hardening concrete is evaluated by combining cement hydration model with three-dimensional finite element thermal analysis. On the other hand, the influences of both self-desiccation and moisture diffusion on variation of relative humidity are considered. The self-desiccation is evaluated by using a semi-empirical expression with desorption isotherm and degree of hydration. The moisture diffusivity is expressed as a function of degree of hydration and current relative humidity. The proposed procedure is verified with experimental results and can be used to evaluate the early-age crack of hardening concrete.

The purpose of this study is to identify how much the MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) can explain the soil moisture simulated from SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) continuous hydrological model. For the application, ChungjuDam watershed (6,661.3 $km^2$) was adopted which covers land uses of 82.2 % forest, 10.3 % paddy field, and 1.8 % upland crop respectively. For the preparation of spatial soil moisture distribution, the SWAT model was calibrated and verified at two locations (watershed outlet and Yeongwol water level gauging station) of the watershed using daily streamflow data of 7 years (2000-2006). The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiencies for the verification at two locations were 0.83 and 0.91 respectively. The 16 days spatial correlation between MODIS NDVI and SWAT soil moisture were evaluated especially during the NDVI increasing periods for forest areas.
This study was conducted to measure the moisture content of soil using RF impedance in the range of 1 to 30MHz. Considering the water potential flow in the soils, two types of sensor such as parallel cylinder and perpendicular plate type were fabricated and tested. The capacitance and resistance of sonsors for soil samples having moisture content range of 2 to 27% were measured by Q-meter (HP4342). The higher soil moisture content was and the larger soil bulk density was, the more the capacitance of sensors increased. To eliminate the effect of bulk density on measuring soil moisture content using RF impedance, two kinds of model having the density independent functions such as the ratio of capacitance change to conductance change and weight of water and dry soils respectively were developed and estimated by regression analysis.
