In this study, a series of triaxial tests to Jeju basalt were carried out and then shear strength parameters of rock were estimated by the Lade's three-dimensional failure criterion. Also, the characteristics of shear strength parameters and failure plane which were estimated by the three-dimensional failure criterion were analyzed and this failure criterion was compared with the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The variables of ${\eta}_1$ and m are derived from the relationship between ($I_1^3/I_3-27$) and ($P_a/I_1$) during the failure period using the Lade's three-dimensional failure criterion. The failure plane size of Tracy-basalt has the largest plane and that of Scoria has the smallest plane among other octahedral planes which is the three-dimensional failure plane. Also, the failure plane of Tracy-basalt is formed as a triangle and that of Scoria is formed as a circle among other octahedral planes. As the result of comparison with the triaxial test results and the Lade's failure envelope and the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope, the Lade's failure envelope matched up under higher stress, while the Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope matched up under lower stress. Also, the Lade's three-dimensional failure plane is larger than the Mohr-Coulomb three-dimensional failure plane. It means that the shear strength parameters estimated by the Lade's failure criterion is larger than that of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.

In this study, the effect of water content condition was investigated on the Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters which are commonly used as the input data in the soil slope analysis. For the purpose, a series of direct shear test was conducted in different water content conditions on the two types of weathered soils and a dam core material, obtained from the domestic slope construction sites and the dam construction site, respectively. The comparisons between the values of the Mohr-Coulomb ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$, estimated from the relationships between the normal stress and the peak shear stress for the samples in the four different water content conditions (i.e., dry side, optimum, wet side, and saturated), showed that overall, the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased gradually while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ did not vary much with increasing the water content. A rough estimate for the varying ratio of the values of ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$ indicated that the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased by every 25% of the $c_{peak}$ values in dry side, while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ were constant, as the water content condition changed from dry, optimum, and wet to saturated, respectively.

The real strength evvelope for soils without cemetation goes through the origin and is curved. The Mohr -Coulomb failure criterion with the strength parameters c' and ø' from conventional tests overestimates the shear strength available at low normal stresses. The results of laboratory tests interpreted in terms of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion are not appropriate for evaluation of surficial slope stability , because the range of effective normal stresses in the field are not used in the laboratory tests.
Determination of mobilized shear strength parameters (that identify stresses on the failure plane) is required for analyzing the stability by limit equilibrium method. Generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) and Mohr-Coulomb (MC) failure criteria are usually used for obtaining stresses on the plane of failure. In the present paper, the applicability of these criteria for determining the stresses on failure plane is investigated. The comparison is based on stresses on the real failure plane which are obtained from the Mohr stress circle. To do so, 18 sets of data (consist of principal stresses and angle of failure plane) presented in the literature are used. In addition, the values account for (VAF) and the root mean square error (RMSE) indices were calculated to check the determination performance of the obtained results. Values of VAF and RMSE for the normal stresses on the failure plane evaluated from MC are 49% and 31.5 where for GHB are 55% and 30.5, respectively. Also, for the shear stresses on failure plane, they are 74% and 36 for MC, 76% and 34.5 for GHB. Results show that the obtained stresses and angles of failure plane for each criterion differ from real ones, but GHB results are closer to the empirical results. Also, it is inferred that results are affected by the failure envelope not real failure plane. Therefore, obtained shear strength parameters are not mobilized. Finally, a multivariable regressed relation is presented for determining the stresses on the failure plane.
The stability of the designed rock slope is analysed based on two kinds of shear strength model. Besides the deterministic analysis, a probabilistic approach on Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to deal with the uncertain characteristics of the discontinuity and the results obtained from two models are compared to each other. To carry out the research of characteristics of the discontinuity, BIPS, DOM Scanline survey data and direct shear test data are used, and chi-square test is used for determining the probability distribution function. The rock slope is evaluated to be stable in the deterministic analysis, but in the probabilistic analysis, the probability of failure is more than 5%, so, it is considered that the rock slope is unstable. In the shear strength models, the probability of the failure based on the Mohr-Coulomb model(linear model) is higher than that of the Barton model. It is supported by the fact that the Mohr-Coulomb model is more sensitive to block size than the Barton model. In fact, there is no reliable way to estimate the unit cohesion of the Mohr-Coulomb model except f3r back analysis and in the case of small block failure in the slope, Mohr-Coulomb model may excessively evaluate the factor of the safety. So, the Barton model of which parameters are easily acquired using the geological survey is more reasonable for the stability of the studied slope. Also, the selection of the proper shear strength model is an important factor for slope failure analysis.

In this study, the in-situ stress, strength and stress-strain characteristics with shear parameters (UU, CU, ${\bar{CU}}$) are analytically evaluated and the stability analyses are carried out under loading/unloading conditions. The in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour may become different according to input shear parameters in finite element analyses with construction step, Especially, if the internal friction angle in Mohr-Coulomb model is set to zero, the in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour might not be properly predicted. The results from CU parameter of total stress analysis have no significant difference with the results from CU of effective stress analysis. Therefore, in the numerical analysis for soft ground, CU parameters can be applied to predict in-situ stress and stress-strain behaviors. In addition, the calculation method was proposed to determine the shear parameter of Mohr-Coulomb model, which is corresponding to the shear strength equivalent to that of in-situ soil.
This study was aimed to suggest reliable information of shear strength characteristics due to change of saturation in the landfills or slopes during rainfall infiltration. According to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, the characteristics of shear strength due to change of saturation were analyzed for the weathered residual soils which were sampled in the road construction site of Daejeon city. From the direct shear strength tests, the cohesions and the shear resistance angles were showed maximum values in the condition of optimum moisture content, and then decreased in the condition of wet side compaction. In this study, the cohesions were decreased more than 50% according to increasing saturation by infiltration for the compaction soils. But the reductions of the shear resistance angles were about $1{\sim}2^{\circ}$ which was small value, and thus the changes of the saturation were not nearly influenced the shear resistance angle. The influences of the saturation were seemed to very small for the residual strength parameters according to Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria.
Both the chemical components and the physical and mechanical properties of the compacted and undisturbed weathered granite soils were estimated to investigate the influences of the degree of weathering and saturation on the shear strength. The weathered granite soils used in this study were taken from six different sites in Korea. The results showed that the shear strength of weathered granite soil decreased with increasing the degree of weathering and saturation. Under the normal stresses less that 40kPa, the shape of Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope followed curved or hyperbolic relationship and a half of cohesion value obtained by the common shear test was observed. Using the Sueoka's method, the values of CWI were ranged from 21.5 to 31.26 which can be characterized as a completely weathered granite soil. Large decrease in shear strength and remarkable variation in dilatancy were observed in saturated granite soil compared to unsaturated soil. It was also found that the shear strength of undisturbed weathered granite soil of Pungam site can be expressed approximately by the equation of ${(\tau)_{sat}= 1.0(\tau)_{unsat}-12.48}$ and this equation can be extended to the other sites considered in this study.
This study proposes the equations evaluating the shear strength of cemented sand by analytical interpretation based on Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, and verifies them using the results of triaxial and unconfined compression tests. The internal friction angle of cemented sand is identical to that of uncemented one regardless of the stress level, while the cohesion intercept of cemented sand is constant before the breakage of cementation bonds. Therefore, the shear strength of cemented sand can be represented as a summation of the shear strength of uncemented sand and the unconfined compressive strength of cemented sand. In addition, the cohesion intercept of cemented specimen can be expressed as a function of unconfined compressive strength and friction angle. In the transition zone, assuming a constant shear strength, the equations to evaluate shear strength and cohesion intercept of cemented sand are also represented. It is observed that the predicted values using these solutions agree well with the experimental results. The experimental results also show a linear relationship between the unconfined compressive strength and the breaking point of cementation bonds.
Various geosynthetics used as liners or protection layers are installed in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill is a very important variable for the safe design of the bottom and cover systems in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between Geomembrane and Geotexile is estimated by a large direct shear test in this study, The effects of normal stress, water existing between geosynthetics and surface condition of Geomembrae, i.e. smooth or textured, were investigated. The test results show that the effect varied depending on the level of normal stress and the type of geosynthetic combinations. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion in this research. The shear strength parameters obtained from tests considering the site specific conditions such as normal stress, dry or wet, and surface condition of geosynthetic should be applied to the design of geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill to construct a safe solid waste landfill.
