The intension of this study is to produce ordinary portland cement using ash, both bottom ash and fly ash, obtained from municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWI). We used limestone, waste molding sand, shale, slag from converting furnaces and fly ash as main raw materials and mixed them, setting the lime saturation factor (LSF) within 91.0, the silica modulus (SM) within 2.40, and iron modulus (IM) within 1.80. We conducted tests adding bottom ash alone 1, 2 and 3% by weight, respectively, and a mixture of bottom ash 0.9% and fly ash 0.1 % by weight. The result of analysis on clinker shows that the more ash is added, the lower the burnability index (B.I.) falls, lowering the mineral evolution of calcium silicate accordingly. From the measurement of compressive strength we have learned that the more ash is used, the lower the strength becomes.
In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 ${\mu}m$. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODE I. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODE II stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE III stage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODE I stage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODE II and then was happened at MODE III. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.
Tensile properties including Young's modulus and tear strength were measured for four different rubber compounds; natural rubber(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS) as a function of temperature and degree of cure. To see the effect of over cure, a measurement was made of the tensile strength and swelling behavior of the over-cured rubber compounds. Young's modulus, E, was found to have linear dependency on the degree of cure for all rubber compounds. EPDM and BIMS showed the highest and lowest slopes, respectively. The slope of NR and SBR lay between EPDM and BIMS. Tear strength, Gc, decreased in the order of NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM. As the cure time was extended the degree of cure of NR and SBR decreased, while that of BIMS increased. EPDM showed little change in the degree of cure.
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most widely adopted silicon-based organic polymeric elastomers. Elastomeric nanostructures are normally required to accomplish an explicit mechanical role and correspondingly their mechanical properties are crucial to affect device and material performance. Despite its wide application, the mechanical properties of PDMS are yet fully understood. In particular, the time dependent mechanical response of PDMS has not been fully elucidated. Here, utilizing state-of-the-art PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping (PFQNM) together with Force Volume (FV) and Fast Force Volume (FFV), the elastic moduli of PDMS samples were assessed in a time-dependent fashion. Specifically, the acquisition frequency was discretely changed four orders of magnitude from 0.1 Hz up to 2 kHz. Careful calibrations were done. Force data were fitted with a linearized DMT contact mechanics model considering surface adhesion force. Increased Young's modulus was discovered with increasing acquisition frequency. It was measured 878 ± 274 kPa at 0.1 Hz and increased to 4586 ± 758 kPa at 2 kHz. The robust local probing of mechanical measurement as well as unprecedented high-resolution topography imaging open new avenues for quantitative nanomechanical mapping of soft polymers, and can be extended to soft biological systems.
Purpose: In this study, an analysis of the differences between the elastoplastic analysis and the numerical analysis and a study of the design ground constant recalculation method to derive similar trends in the analysis results were conducted. Method: The relational expression between the ground reaction force coefficient and the ground deformation coefficient at the time when the wall displacement becomes the same according to shallow excavation and deep excavation was derived. Result: Based on the measurement results, reverse analysis was performed to re-calculate the ground properties suitable for the site ground, and as a result of comparing and verifying the wall displacement using the derived formula and the literature formula, the proposed formula showed the most similar value. Conclusion: If the proposed formula is used, it will be helpful in practice because it is possible to infer the most similar ground properties to the actual at the time of design.
We measured mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, effective bending modulus and nominal fracture strength of nanohoneycomb structures using an Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) and a Nano-Universal Testing Machine(UTM). Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) films are well suited as nanohoneycomb structures because of the simple fabrication process, high aspect ratio, self-ordered hexagonal pore structure, and simple control of pore dimensions. Bending tests were carried out for cantilever structures by pressing AFM tips, and the results were compared with three-point bending tests and tensile tests using a Nano-UTM. One side of the AAO films is clogged by harrier layers, and looks like a face material of conventional sandwich structures. Analysis of this layer showed that it did not influence the bending rigidity, and was just a crack tip. The present results can act as a design guideline in applications of nanohoneycomb structures.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of instrument compliance on the polymerization shrinkage stress measurements of dental composites. The contraction strain and stress of composites during light curing were measured by a custom made stress-strain analyzer, which consisted of a displacement sensor, a cantilever load cell and a negative feedback mechanism. The instrument can measure the polymerization stress by two modes: with compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is allowed, or without compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is not allowed. A flowable (Filtek Flow: FF) and two universal hybrid (Z100: Z1 and Z250: Z2) composites were studied. A silane treated metal rod with a diameter of 3.0 mm was fixed at free end of the load cell, and other metal rod was fixed on the base plate. Composite of 1.0 mm thickness was placed between the two rods and light cured. The axial shrinkage strain and stress of the composite were recorded for 10 minutes during polymerization. and the tensile modulus of the materials was also determined with the instrument. The statistical analysis was conducted by ANOVA. paired t-test and Tukey's test (${\alpha}<0.05$). There were significant differences between the two measurement modes and among materials. With compliance mode, the contraction stress of FF was the highest: 3.11 (0.13). followed by Z1: 2.91 (0.10) and Z2: 1.94 (0.09) MPa. When the instrument compliance is not allowed, the contraction stress of Z1 was the highest: 17.08 (0.89), followed by FF: 10.11 (0.29) and Z2: 9.46 (1.63) MPa. The tensile modulus for Z1, Z2 and FF was 2.31 (0.18), 2.05 (0.20), 1.41 (0.11) GPa, respectively. With compliance mode. the measured stress correlated with the axial shrinkage strain of composite: while without compliance the elastic modulus of materials played a significant role in the stress measurement.
Elastic behavior of the railway roadbed which supports the repeating dynamic loads of the train is mainly affected by the shear modulus of the upper roadbed. Therefore, shear wave velocity estimation of the uniformly compacted roadbed can be used to estimate the elastic behavior of the railway roadbed. The objective of this study is to suggest the relationship between the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) of the upper roadbed in order to estimate the shear wave velocity by using the dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT). To ensure the reliability of the relationship, the dynamic cone penetration test and the measurement of the shear wave velocity are conducted on the constructed upper roadbed. As a method for measurement of the shear wave velocity, cross hole is used and then the dynamic cone penetration test is performed at a center point between the source and the receiver of the cross hole. As a result of the correlation of the dynamic cone penetration index and the shear wave velocity at the same depths, the shear wave velocity is estimated as a form of involution of the dynamic cone penetration index with a determinant coefficient above 0.8. The result of this study can be used to estimate both the shear wave velocity and the strength of the railway roadbed using the dynamic cone penetrometer.

This study is performed to establish a non-destructive evaluation method for metal matrix composite using ultrasonic technique. The specimen is made of SiC/AC8A metal matrix composite by squeeze-casting method. Three kinds or reinforced particles are prepared as 4.86, 8.09 and $11.44{\mu}m$ to investigate the effect of size on the mechanical and ultrasonic properties of metal matrix composite. In addition, four different volume fractions (14, 22.5, 27.5, 35%) of reinforced particles are prepared per each size to examine the effect of volume fraction on the ultrasonic properties. From this specimen, the availability and precision of measurement of Young's modulus are examined and the evaluation method for microstructure of metar matrix composite using the speed of sound and attenuation factor is also reviewed. The results show that the Young's modulus measured by ultrasonic method is as effective as that measured by mechanical method. It is also known that the size and volume fraction of reinforced fiber are precisely evaluated using the speed of sound and attenuation factor.

We have investigated reliable inspection methods for finding the defects generated during the manufacturing process of lightweight, large-aperture satellite telescope mirrors using silicon carbide, and we have measured the basic physical properties of the mirrors. We applied the advanced ceramic material (ACM) method, a combined method using liquid-silicon penetration sintering and chemical vapor deposition for the carbon molded body, to manufacture four SiC mirrors of different sizes and shapes. We have provided the defect standards for the reflectors systematically by classifying the defects according to the size and shape of the mirrors, and have suggested effective nondestructive methods for mirror surface inspection and internal defect detection. In addition, we have analyzed the measurements of 14 physical parameters (including density, modulus of elasticity, specific heat, and heat-transfer coefficient) that are required to design the mirrors and to predict the mechanical and thermal stability of the final products. In particular, we have studied the detailed measurement methods and results for the elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and flexural strength to improve the reliability of mechanical property tests.
