  • Previous approaches to sizing the carrier spacing for voice-oriented cellular systems have been based on the outage requirement. However, such a design paradigm needs to be changed as the performance of most upcoming cellular systems employing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) techniques is more sensitive to throughput than outage. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to determining the carrier spacing which is based on a throughput criterion. The proposed method reflects well the characteristics of throughput-sensitive cellular systems that transport multimedia traffic. Numerical results show that our approach requires less carrier spacing, thus leading to more efficient spectrum utilization.

  • Recently the researches on modular multi-level converter (MMC) are being highlighted because high quality and efficient power transmission have become key issues in high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. This paper proposes an improved pre-charging method for the sub-module (SM) capacitor of MMC-based HVDC systems, which operates in the nearest level control (NLC) modulation and does not need additional circuits or pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified through computer simulations for a scaled 3-phase 10kVA MMC with 12 SMs per each arm. Hardware experiments with a scaled prototype have also been performed in the lab to confirm the simulation results.

  • This article proposes a Four-Quadrant Analog Multiplier (4-QAM) applying switched-capacitor and pulse-width amplitude modulation (PWAM) principles. The features of the presented circuit are that it can function as analog multiplier with a wide dynamic range of input signal and no disturbing from deviation of carrier frequency of PWM signal. In addition, the circuit detail is simpler than that of the previously proposed circuits. It is then easy and applicable for employing it into Integrated Circuit (IC) realization to especially operate in low-frequency and low-power applications. The experimental results granted are in correspondence to the theoretical analysis.

  • A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating in the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) is considered a strong future candidate for indoor wireless communication. However, its performance seems to be relatively unsatisfactory when compared to wireless local area network (WLAN) communication using millimeter waves. To improve the performance of VLC, numerous technologies have been proposed so far, in both electrical and optical domains. Among the proposals, optical beamforming (OB) is an optical-domain technology that can concentrate light in a specific direction or on a target spot. It can significantly improve VLC performance and can be widely used, because it does not depend on electrical modulation schemes. Therefore, this review discusses the concept, principle, and types of OB, the structure of a VLC system using OB, performance results of OB, and the combination of OB with electrical signal modulation in VLC. OB is expected to be one of the key techniques in future VLC implementations, similar to radio-frequency beamforming in millimeter-wave communication.

  • Due to their performances and inherent benefits, especially in medium-voltage and high-power applications, multilevel inverters have received an increasing attention in real world industrial applications. The present paper deals with a review of the main multilevel inverter topologies as well their most common derived and hybrid structures quoted in previous research works. It also encompasses an investigation on voltage harmonic elimination and THD estimation. For that reason, the paper summarizes the most relevant modulation techniques used so far to enhance the output voltage quality. Theoretical formulas evoked in the literature, for calculating the output voltage THD upper and lower bounds are reported and verified by adequate simulations.

  • It is general opinion that the future mobile multimedia networks will use different standards and a prospective solution to this problem will be software defined radio (SDR) techniques. SDR provides the flexibility to support multiple air interfaces and signal processing functions at the same time. Especially, digital signal processors and FPGAs are widely used for implementation of these adaptive and flexible functions of a baseband modem for SDR applications. Also, it is known that the modulation schemes of OCQPSK (Orthogonal Complex QPSK) and HPSK (Hybrid PSK) are used for IMT-2000 services of cdma2000 and WCDMA, respectively. Thus, in this paper, we design and implement an OCQPSK / HPSK modem using a DSP chip of Texas Instrument's TMS320C6701. One modulation scheme is operated by adaptive selection between the two schemes and 5 physical traffic channels differentiated by orthogonal codes are implemented in one DSP chip and each channel has 1Mbps data rates and 8Mcps chip rates.

  • A high-performance rectifier is introduced in this study. The proposed rectifier combines the conventional pulse width modulation, soft commutation, and instantaneously average line current control techniques to promote circuit performance. The voltage stresses of the main switches in the rectifier are lower than those in conventional rectifier topologies. Moreover, conduction losses of switches in the rectifier are certainly lower than those in conventional rectifier topologies because the power current flow path when the main switches are turned on includes two main power semiconductors and the power current flow path when the main switches are turned off includes one main power semiconductor. The rectifier also adopts a ZCS-PWM auxiliary circuit to derive the ZCS function for power semiconductors. Thus, the problem of switching losses and EMI can be improved. In the control strategy, the controller uses the average current control mode to achieve fixed-frequency current control with stability and low distortion. A prototype has been implemented in the laboratory to verify circuit theory.

  • In this paper, an appropriate modulation method was implemented as their results presented in details and verified by the simulations. The data compensation method at momentary high noise occurrence by using retransmission request techniques that uses error checking was discussed. Finally, application of other modulation method by detection of error rate per bit according to variation of channel error caused by electric equipment that is connected to power line was studied.
