  • Reverse matrix converters, which can step up voltages, are suitable for applications with source voltages that are lower than load voltages, such as generator systems. Reverse matrix converter topologies are advantageous because they do not require additional components to conventional matrix converters. In this paper, a detection method and a post-fault modulation strategy to operate a converter as close as possible to its desired normal operation under the open-switch fault condition in the rectifier stage are proposed. An open-switch fault in the rectifier stage of a reverse matrix converter causes current distortions and voltage ripples in the system. Therefore, fault-tolerant control for open-switch faults is required to improve the reliability of a system. The proposed strategy determines the appropriate switching stages from among the remaining healthy switches of the converter. This is done based on reference currents or voltages. The performance of the proposed strategy is experimentally verified.

  • A single-phase step-up five-level inverter topology with a new phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) strategy is proposed in this paper. When compared with conventional single-phase five-level inverter topologies, the proposed topology can realize multilevel inversion with a double step-up ratio, a reduced number of switching devices and self-balanced capacitor voltages. When compared with the conventional PS-PWM strategy, the new PS-PWM strategy can be implemented with one carrier reduced, which makes it much easier to implement in a digital signal processor (DSP) system. Experimental results have been presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed inverter and the PS-PWM strategy.

  • An optimized PWM switching strategy for an induction motor voltage control is developed and demonstrated. Space vector modulation in voltage source inverter offers improved DC-bus utilization and reduced commutation losses and has been therefor recognized the preferred PWM method especially in case of digital implementation. An optimized PWM switching strategy for an induction motor voltage control consists of switching between the two active and one zero voltage vector by using the proposed optimal PWM algorithm. The preferred switching sequence is defined as a function of the modulation index and period of a carrier wave. The sequence is selected by using the inverter switching losses and the current ripple as the criteria. For low and medium power application, the experimental results indicate that good dynamic response and reduced harmonic distortion can be achieved by increasing switching frequency.

  • This paper presents a novel hybrid carrier based space vector modulation for cascaded multilevel inverters. The proposed technique inherits the properties of carrier based space vector modulation and the fundamental frequency modulation strategy. The main characteristic of this modulation are the reduction of power loss, and improved harmonic performance. The carrier based space vector modulation algorithm is implemented with a TMS320F2407 digital signal processor. A Xilinx Complex Programmable Logic Device is used to develop the hybrid PWM control algorithm and it is integrated with a digital signal processor for hybrid carrier based space vector PWM generation. The inverter offers less weighted total harmonic distortion and it operates with equal electrostatic and electromagnetic stress among the power devices. The feasibility of the proposed technique is verified by spectral analysis, simulation, and experimental results.

  • The control performance of hybrid PWM inverter using a phase current measurement is presented in this paper. The hybrid PWM technique consists of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) and six-step voltage control operation. The SVPWM is performed to reduce the harmonic components in the low speed region, and the six-step modulation is applied to increase the maximum speed of the IPMSM in the high speed region. Therefore, it is possible to obtain a great performance in both the low speed range and high speed range. However, the six-step modulation cannot be completely implemented, since the inverter that includes the lag-shunt sensing method has an immeasurable current region. In this paper, a quasi-six-step modulation using a modified voltage vector is proposed. The validity and usefulness of the proposed PWM technique is verified by MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results.

  • A new pulse width modulation method based on predictive current control strategy is proposed to modulate matrix converters. The predictive current controller utilizes a discrete-time model to predict the future values of output currents and generates proper duty-ratios ta minimize the output current errors. The proposed method uses continuous carrier and establishes a predictive current controller to predetermine duty ratio signal for directly generating gating signals an thus is named "predictive current control PWM(PCCPWM)". The modulation algorithm nd the required equations are derived by using average concept over one switching period. Thus it can be easily extended to other matrix converter topologies, especially with neutral connections, such as sing le-phase ad two-phase matrix converters. The feasibility and validity of the proposed strategy are verified by computer simulation and experimental results.

  • A digital self-sustained phase shift modulation (DSSPSM) strategy that allows for good soft switching and dynamic response performance in the presence of step variations is presented in this paper. The working principle, soft switching characteristics, and voltage gain formulae of a LLC converter with DSSPSM have been provided separately. Furthermore, the method for realizing DSSPSM is proposed. Specifically, some key components of the proposed DSSPSM are carefully investigated, including a parameter variation analysis, the start-up process, and the zero-crossing capture of the resonant current. The simulation and experiment results verify the feasibility of the proposed control method. It is observed that the zero voltage switching of the switches and the zero current switching of the rectifier diodes can be easily realized in presence of step load variations.

  • In this paper, an advanced Pulse Width Modulation Inverter strategy for driving a variable-speed induction motor is introduced. A switching pattern making use of the near-proportionality of voltage and frequency in AC machines operating with constant flux was computed. At low magnitudes and ow frequencies of the fundamental, many more harmonics are eliminated than at high magnitudes and frequencies. In order to keep the inverter switching frequency constant over the output frequency range, the chopping frequency is diminished as the frequency of the fundamental increases. Using these modulation strategy, the harmonics components of PWM inverter are efficiently eliminated.

  • A novel general direct duty ratio pulse width modulation strategy is proposed to modulate matrix converters. By using average concept over one switching period, the modulation algorithm and the required equations are derived to synthesize the desired output voltage and to achieve the controlled input power factor. The proposed method use continuous carrier and the predetermined duty ratio signal for directly generating gating signals an thus is named "direct duty ratio PWM(DDPWM)". The feasibility and validity of the proposed strategy are verified by experimental results.
