  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of the encoding and the modulation processes in the downlink and uplink of the EPCglobal Gen-2 system through the analysis and simulation. Furthermore, the synchronization issues on time and frequency domain and the preamble architecture are evaluated. By incorporating the encoding and the modulation technigue in the downlink and uplink, we assess the performance of the EPCglobal Gen-2 system. We also introduce the encoding and backscatter modulation process as well as the BER performance of FM0 code. In addition, the importance and the role of the frequency and time synchronization, such as the preamble and frame synchronization are explained. Through the simulation in the uplink on the detection probability through preamble, we find that the detection probability approaches 1 for 13 dB $E_b/N_0$.

  • In this paper, we investigated the effect of cross phase modulation(XPM) on compensation for WDM channel distortion due to chromatic dispersion, self phase modulation and XPM as a function of fiber dispersion coefficient and modulation format in 320 Gbps WDM systems. The considered WDM transmission system is based on mid-span spectral inversion(MSSI) compensation method, which has highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) as nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the mid-way of total transmission line. We confirmed that the maximum channel input power resulting 1 dB eye opening penalty is reduced due to XPM effect on channel distortion, even if MSSI method was applied to WDM system. But, we confirmed that the effect of XPM on channel distortion becomes decrease as fiber dispersion coefficient of WDM system becomes larger. Futhermore, we confirmed that NRZ is better than RZ as a modulation format for similarly compensating overall WDM channels in WDM system with large fiber dispersion coefficient in order to minimize the effect of the XPM on channel distortion.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-complexity robust maximum likelihood (ML) receiver for generalized spatial modulation. The proposed receiver performs the transmit antenna partition to lower the computational loads. After we divide the transmit antenna combinations into two parts, one of which is "the likely TAC part," and the other of which is "the unlikely TAC part", based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) filtering output. We first perform the maximum likelihood detection only in the likely TAC part. Then we evaluate the reliability of the solution found in the first search, and based its reliability we decide whether we continue the search in the unlikely TAC part. This partitioned search strategy maintains the performance of the conventional robust maximum likelihood receiver and simultaneously lowers computational loads. Through simulation, we found that our newly-proposed receiver achieves considerable gains over the conventional robust ML detector in terms of the computational loads while providing almost the same performance.

  • In an optical interferometer that uses sinusoidal modulation and quadrature detection, the amplitude and offset of the interference signal vary with time, even without considering system noise. As a result, the circular Lissajous figure becomes elliptical, with wide lines. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for compensating quadrature detection error, based on digital signal processing to deal with scaling and fitting. In scaling, fluctuations in the amplitudes of in-phase and quadrature signals are compensated, and the scaled signals are fitted to a Lissajous unit circle. To do so, we scale the average fluctuation, remove the offset, and fit the ellipse to a unit circle. Our measurements of a target moving with uniform velocity show that we reduce quadrature detection error from 5 to 2 nanometers.

  • Perception of sweet compounds is important for animals to detect external carbohydrate source of calories and plays a crucial role in feeding behavior of animals. Recent progress in molecular genetic studies provides evidence for a candidate receptor (heterodimers with taste receptor type 1 member 2 and 3: T1R2/T1R3), and major downstream transduction molecules required for sweet taste signaling. Several studies demonstrated that the sweet taste signal can be modulated by a satiety hormone, leptin, through its receptors expressed in a subset of sweet-sensitive taste cells. Increase of internal energy storage in the adipose tissue leads to increase in the plasma leptin level which can reduce activities of sweet-sensitive cells. In human, thus, diurnal variation of plasma leptin level parallels variation of taste recognition thresholds for sweet compounds. This leptin modulation of sweet taste sensitivity may influence individuals' preference, ingestive behavior, and absorption of nutrients, thereby plays important roles in regulation of energy homeostasis.

  • A scheme is proposed for measuring similarities between the binary pulse signals in the pulse-code modulation using the Integra-Normalizer. The Integra-Normalizer provides a better interpretation of the relationship between the pulse signals by removing redundant codes, which maps all possible observed signals to one of the codes to be received with relative similarities between each pair of compared signals. The proposed method provides better error tolerance than L2 metric, such as Hamming distance, since the distances between pulse signals are measured not useful for the time-delay detection in the pulse-code modulation.

  • In the embodiment of power line modem, the important elements are selection of a suitable line-coupler, choice of a modulation method good for channel environments, and an efficient data coding method etc. In this paper an appropriate modulation method was implemented their results in details and verified by the simulations. The data compensation request techniques that uses error checking was discussed. Finally, application of other modulation method by detection of error rate per bit according to vary of channel error caused by electric equipment that is connected to power line was studied.

  • In shallow water, the performance of the operating active sonar systems is usually limited by reverberation. One of the measure to overcome the negative effect of reverberation is of selecting an adequate transmission pulse. SFM(Sinusoidal Frequency Modulation) pulse has been received a considerable attention as a candidate for suppressing the reverberation effect. In this paper, we analyze the detection performance of SFM pulse with respect to modulation frequency and bandwidth. To conduct the analysis. we synthesize the signal at the receiver considering. the transmitter. the receiver, and the propagation medium characteristcs. The simulations provide the optimum modulation frequency and bandwidth under the given situation.

  • Diode laser absorption sensors are advantageous because they may provide fast, sensitive, absolute, and selective measurements of species concentration. These systems are very attractive for practical applications owing to its compactness, reasonable cost, robustness, and ease of use. In addition, diode lasers we fiber-optic compatible and thus enable simultaneous measurements of multiple species along a line-of-sight. Recent advances of room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications make it possible to be applied for combustion diagnostics based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Therefore, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor systems are now appearing for variety of applications. The objectives of this research are to develop new gas sensing system and to verify feasibility of this system. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy has been demonstrated in these experiments and has a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • Energy spreading transform (EST) based modulation is an effective technique to combat frequency-selective fading in broadband wireless communication. It performs close to the inter-symbol interference (ISI)-free matched filter bound (MFB) only at the complexity of a linear detector. Originally, EST-based modulation has been proposed for QPSK. However, to fully utilize the capacity of multipath fading channels, higher-order modulations are also necessary. In this paper, we review the EST based modulation that has originally been proposed for QPSK and discuss its extension to 8 PSK and 16 QAM. The performance of the extended system is verified through simulation in Proakis B and 8-tap fading channel. The EST based modulation for 8 PSK shows the performance which is very close to MFB and the EST based modulation for 16 QAM shows the performance gap between its receiver and MFB.
