  • In this paper, we present symbol detection methods for decision feedback equalizers (DFE) in trellis coded modulation systems. The proposed symbol detectors improve symbol error rate (SER) by exploiting the coding structure of trellis coded modulation (TCM). For example, for 8-PAM signals the achieved SER with the proposed detection scheme is improved to $2{\times}10^{-5}$ from $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ of the conventional symbol-by-symbol detector under AWGN channel at 20dB SNR. This SER improvements mitigate error propagation of DFE.and produces significant over-all SER improvement for under multipath channels (for example, from 0.26 to 0.01 and 0.005 under a severe multipath channel 20dB SNR as shown in the simulation result of this paper).

  • In this paper, an iterative multiple symbol differential detection for turbo coded differential unitary space-time modulation using a posteriori probability (APP) demodulator is investigated. Two approaches of different complexity based on linear prediction are presented to utilize the temporal correlation of fading for the APP demodulator. The first approach intends to take account of all possible previous symbols for linear prediction, thus requiring an increase of the number of trellis states of the APP demodulator. In contrast, the second approach applies Viterbi algorithm to assist the APP demodulator in estimating the previous symbols, hence allowing much reduced decoding complexity. These two approaches are found to provide a trade-off between performance and complexity. It is shown through simulation that both approaches can offer significant BER performance improvement over the conventional differential detection under both correlated slow and fast Rayleigh flat-fading channels. In addition, when comparing the first approach to a modified bit-interleaved turbo coded differential space-time modulation counterpart of comparable decoding complexity, the proposed decoding structure can offer performance gain over 3 dB at BER of $10^{-5}$.

  • In this study, the reliability of nonlinear ultrasonic modulation based fatigue crack detection is improved using a feature-level data fusion approach. When two ultrasonic inputs at two distinct frequencies are applied to a specimen with a fatigue crack, modulation components at the summation and difference of these two input frequencies appear. First, the spectral amplitudes of the modulation components and their spectral correlations are defined as individual features. Then, a 2D feature space is constructed by combining these two features, and the presence of a fatigue crack is identified in the feature space. The effectiveness of the proposed fatigue crack detection technique is experimentally validated through cyclic loading tests of aluminum plates, full-scale steel girders and a rotating shaft component. Subsequently, the improved reliability of the proposed technique is quantitatively investigated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. The uniqueness of this study lies in (1) improvement of nonlinear ultrasonic modulation based fatigue crack detection reliability using feature-level data fusion, (2) reference-free fatigue crack diagnosis without using the baseline data obtained from the intact condition of the structure, (3) application to full-scale steel girders and shaft component, and (4) quantitative investigation of the improved reliability using receiver operating characteristic analysis.

  • In the paper, the differential detection techniques of 3-h CPM signals whose modulation index is varied periodically are proposed and their error performances are analyzed. We select the modulation index sets which are proper to the differential detection and propose the differential detectors which detect symbol with 3 bits per smapling period of 3T and detect a bit per sampling period of T. Applying the nonredundant error correction circuit and viterbi algorithm to differential detection of 3-h CPM. We ascertain the error performances are improved.

  • In this paper, the idea of using a multiple symbol obervation interval to improve error probability performance is applied to differential detection of MTCM(multiple trellis code modulation) with ${\Pi}$/4 shift QPSK, 8DPSK and 16DPSK. We propose two types of sliding multiple symbol differential detection algorithm, type 1 and type 2. The two types of sliding detection scheme are examined and compared with conventional(symbol-by-symbol) detection and bolck detection with these modulation formats in an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) using the Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the amount of improvement over conventional and block detection depends on the number of phases and the number of additional symbol intervals added to the observation. Computer simulagtion results are presented for 2,4,8 states in AWGN channel.

  • In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood signal detection scheme for a generalized spatial modulation system that activates only a subset of transmit antennas among multiple antennas and transmits information through the indexes of active antennas as well as through the transmit symbols. The proposed maximum likelihood receiver extracts a set of candidate solutions based on their a posteriori probabilities to lower the computational load of the robust receiver under channel information errors. Then, the chosen candidate solutions are exploited to estimate the covariance matrix of effective noise. Simulation results show that the proposed maximum likelihood detection scheme achieves better error performance than a receiver that does not take into account the channel information errors. It is also seen that it reduces the computational complexity with the same bit error rate performance as the conventional robust maximum likelihood receiver.

  • Recently, STC techniques have been considered to be candidate to support multimedia services in the next generation mobile radio communications and have been developed the many communications systems in order to achieve the high data rates. In this paper, we Nose the Trellis-Coded Differential Space Time Modulation system with multiple symbol detection. The Trellis-code performs the set partition with unitary group codes. The Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the unitary differential space time modulation. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER performance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose a bandwidth-efficient channel coding scheme using the turbo trellis-coded modulation with multiple symbol detection. The turbo code can achieve good bit error rates (BER) at low SNR. That comprises two binary component codes and an interleaver. TCM codes combine modulation and coding by optimizing the euclidean distance between codewords. This can be decoded with the Viterbi or the symbol-by- symbol MAP algorithm. But we present the MAP algorithm with branch metrics of the Euclidean distance of the first phase difference as well as the Lth phase difference. The study shows that the turbo trellis-coded modulation with multiple symbol detection can improve the BER performance at the same SNR.

  • In this study, an algorithm for blind modulation detection in EDGE systems is presented. EDGE introduces an 8PSK modulation to provide high-speed data rates in addition to the existing GSM system. A transmitter may switch dynamically the modulation and coding schemes for transmission of data according to the channel quality. To decode the data correctly, the receiver has to detect using only training sequence which modulation is being used. Basically the property of one radio block composed of four bursts to detect effectively the modulation scheme even under severe conditions is used. More specifically, the reference value calculated for received burst is accumulated with previous reference value to minimize statistically the false detection probability in one radio block. Also each burst data having different modulation from the modulation of the fourth burst is set to zero to improve the decoding performance because the reference of the fourth burst has the highest reliability.

  • A new low-complexity differential detection technique, fractional multi-bit differential detection (FMDD), is proposed in order to improve the performance of continuous phase modulation (CPM) signals such as Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) and Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK). In comparison to conventional one-bit differential detected (1DD) GFSK, the FMDD-employed GFSK provides a signal-to-noise ratio advantage of up to 1.8 dB in an AWGN channel. Thus, the bit-error rate performance of the proposed FMDD is brought close to that of an ideal coherent detection while avoiding the implementation complexity associated with the carrier recovery. In the adjacent channel interference environment, FMDD achieves an even larger SNR advantage compared to 1DD.
