  • In order to prepare for a future nuclear market, research for developing floating small modular reactor has been initiated with the aim of differentiating it from large nuclear power plants such as distributed power, heat supply to remote communities and sea water desalination. Depending on the characteristics of the small modular reactor, it is necessary to design a plate and shell heat exchanger that can be manufactured smaller than the U-tube recirculation method. In this study, 12 cases are selected by changing the diameter of the heat plate, the thickness of the device body and the size of the stiffener. Finite element analysis is performed by setting the stress classification lines for the point at which deformation is expected under external pressure conditions for these analysis cases. For the basic design of the plate and shell heat exchanger, the optimal conditions are derived by analyzing the tendency of stress change in the device body and stiffener.

  • Military Barracks and Bachelor Officer's Quarters are public buildings representing architectural characteristics with repeating the same room modules. These buildings require easy dismantling and reusing for the next generation' military re-organization. For these reasons, since 2005, the modular construction has been applied to military buildings. The most important factors required for modular military buildings are standardization, lowcost construction and reusable construction method. However, conventional modular building system have not been matched with these requirements. This study suggests a new modular system for Bachelor Officer's Quarters using Six-sigma design tool. To reflect the voices of customers, market study and surveys were carried out. Through the QFD, the voices of customers were converted into quality characteristics of building system for BOQ. The various design concepts meeting customer's requirement were derived by the QFD and Pugh matrix methodology. The proposed modular building system shows 80% increased factory production rate and 62% decreased weight of steel frame as compared with the conventional modular building system.

  • The modular robots are a kind of system that was developed to overcome the limitation of the movement for the mobile robot with wheels or legs. In legs type mobile robot case, they are limited for velocity and balance during moving at the uneven terrain. In wheeled mobile robot case, they are also limited to overcome dump, stair and so on. The modular robots can overcome moving limitation because of their transforming ability. However, they are researched not only driving mechanism but also combination mechanism. In this paper we proposed four kinds of unique structure for the combination and separation and also its algorithm. The effectiveness of the structure is verified with building the real structure and taking experiments to the designed modular robot

  • Recently, the modular network was proposed in a way to keep the size of the neural network small. The modular network solves the problem by splitting it into sub-problems. In this aspect, fuzzy systems act in a similar way. However, in a fuzzy system, there must be an expert rule which separates the input space. To overcome this, fuzzy-neural network has been used. However, the number of fuzzy rules grows exponentially as the number of input variables grow. In this paper, we would like to solve the size problem of neural networks using modular network with the hierarchic structure. In the hierarchic structure, the output of precedent module affects only the THEN part of the rule. Finally, the rules become shorter being compared to the rule of fuzzy-neural system. Also, the relations between input and output could be understood more easily in the Proposed modular network and that makes design easier.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the advancement of the competitive power of Korean electronics and automobile industries from a product-architectural point of view. There are two types for the characteristics of parts. They are the modular type and the integral type. The former is very independent between one subsystem and another, whereas the other is very dependent. The distinction of product architecture makes them different for the ability to organize developing products suited for the product manufacturing. The organizing ability is generally divided into the abilities of 'modulation integration' and 'selection assembly'. For the integral products such as cars, the integration ability is important between an enterprise and another, as well as between a part and another. However, the modular products such as a PC need the ability to select and effectively organize optimal parts or enterprises. The strategy raising product competitiveness is pursued by synthesizing 'design manufactu-turing strategy' for the product architecture and 'customer value strategy' for the customer values.

  • Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

  • In this paper, we present a modular pointer analysis algorithm based on the update history. We use the term 'module' to mean a set of mutually recursive procedures and the term 'modular analysis' to mean a program analysis that does not need the source codes of the other modules to analyze a module. Since a modular pointer analysis does not utilize any information on the callers, it is difficult to design a precise analysis that does not lose the information related to the program flow or the calling context. In this paper, we propose a modular and flow- and context-sensitive pointer analysis algorithm based on the update history that can memory states of a procedure independently of the information on the calling context and keep the information on the order of side effects performed. Such a memory representation not only enables the analysis to be formalized as a modular analysis, but also helps the analysis to effectively identify killed side effects and relevant alias contexts.

  • An $AB^2$ modular operation is an efficient basic operation for the public key cryptosystems and various systolic architectures for $AB^2$ modular operation have been proposed. However, these architectures have a shortcoming for cryptographic applications due to their high area complexity. Accordingly, this paper presents an partitioned $AB^2$ systolic modular multiplier over GF($2^m$). A dependency graph from the MSB $AB^2$ modular multiplication algorithm is partitioned into 1/3 to get an partitioned $AB^2$ systolic multiplier. The multiplier reduces the area complexity about 2/3 compared with the previous multiplier. The multiplier could be used as a basic building block to implement the modular exponentiation for the public key cryptosystems based on smartcard which has a restricted hardware requirements.

  • This study deals with reconfigurable modular robot with respect to the compact and capability of representing the various actions for promoting creativity through education and play. Generally modular robot can be designed as a suitable robot that is transformed to various structure by reconstructing each cells, However, there are only few research on the education and play using those robots in the world and still nothing domestically. Unlike the existing modular robots only having a repeating motion, the proposed modular works by individual module such as sound is produced by sound module, wheel is driven by wheel module, LED module controls the visual expression, power is supplied by battery module, bluetooth module for communication, and dynamic motion realization is possible by using joint module. By manipulating the abilities endowed by individual modules, diversity of creative activities is possible and thus made an easy access for children. This study deals with the design of modular robotic by using the variety of different modules to endowed the learning and playing ability. And the study showed the utility of the operating behavior over the actual production and testing.

  • Seismic design of modular structures is usually carried out under the assumption that their load-carrying mechanism is similar to that of traditional steel moment-resisting frames(SMRFs). However, the load carry mechanism of modular structures would be different with that of traditional SMRFs because of their overlapped structural elements and complicated details of connections for the assembly of the unit-modules. In this study, nonlinear static analyses of 3 and 5-story prototype modular structures have been carried out with four different analytical models, which are established in consideration for the effects of overlapped elements and the hysteretic behavior of connections. Prototype structures present different lateral stiffness and strength depending on the modeling of overlapped elements and the rotational behavior of connections. For modular structures designed under assumption that overlapped structural elements are fully composite each other and connections between unit-modules are fixed, their lateral strength and stiffness can be over-estimated. Furthermore, it is known from the analysis results that modular structures with more than 3-stories would possess relatively low overstrength compared to traditional SMRFs.
