Improvement of Manufacturing Drawings for Manufacturing Quality Assurance of Modular Housing Unit (모듈러 주거시설의 단위유닛 제작품질 확보를 위한 공장제작도서 개선 연구)

  • In modular architecture, manufacturing drawing which includes whole information for modular unit production is essential since works for modular unit have to be performed in manufacturing factory not construction field. Although the manufacturing drawing is important as known it is insufficient to utilize the manufacturing drawing in modular architecture project and this makes modular unit low-quality with re-work and work time delay. To prevent low-quality modular unit caused by insufficient manufacturing drawing, in this research firstly manufacturing drawing's current situation and error cases in manufacturing phase of past modular housing project were analyzed, and correlation between reduction of errors occurance frequency and improving manufacturing drawing was verified. Secondly manufacturing drawing improvement factors were deducted in interior, furniture, mechanical work phase which errors' occurance rate is high and the way of deducting manufacturing drawing lists and contents were suggested with light-weight work as an example in case of new type of errors occurance. A series of research process can contribute to good-quality modular unit by errors reduction. As a result of research, about half of errors occurance can be reduced with suggested manufacturing drawing improvement factors. And the manufacturing drawing process can contribute to modular production which have uniform quality.

  • Besides strong customer orientation, today's companies should respond increasingly to a market getting worse for securing competitiveness with a diversity of product spectrum. In these new conditions in the surrounding field of manufacturing, the changeability of manufacturing system develops more and more to the key success factor. The following contributions introduce a fast and cost-efficient concept for changeover which bases on a modular system's architecture. The modular structure of manufacturing system allows the required changing processes with limited side effects on other modules. Based on a modular concept, manufacturing systems can be easily configured and reconfigured to specific requirements.

  • The modular construction has several advantages such as high quality of product, safe work condition and short construction duration. The manufacturing planning of modular construction should consider time frame of manufacturing, transport and erection process with limited resources (e.g., modular units, transporter and workers). The manufacturing planning of multi modular construction project manages the modular construction's characteristics and diversity of projects, as a type of modular unit, modular unit quantities, and date for delivery. However, current modular manufacturing planning techniques are weak in dealing with resource interactions and each project requirement in multi modular construction project environments. Inefficient allocation of resources during multi modular construction project may cause delays and cost overruns to construction operation. In this circumstance, this research suggest a manufacturing planning model for schedule optimization of multi project of modular construction, using genetic algorithm as one of the powerful method for schedule optimization with multiple constrained resources. Comparing to the result of the existed schedule of case study, setting optimized scheduling for multi project decrease the total factory producing schedule. By using proposed optimization tool, efficient allocation of resource and saving project time is expected.

Determination of the profit-maximizing configuration for the modular cell manufacturing system using stochastic process (실시간 고장포용 생산시스템의 적정 성능 유지를 위한 최적 설계 기법에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the analytical appproaches are presented for jointly determining the profit-miximizing configuration of the fault-tolerance real time modular cell manufacturing system. The transient(time-dependent) analysis of Markovian models is firstly applied to modular cell manufacturing system from a performability viewpoint whose modeling advantage lies in its ability to express the performance that truly matters - the user's perception of it - as well as various performance measures compositely in the context of application. The modular cells are modeled with hybrid decomposition method and then availability measures such as instantaneous availability, interval availability, expected cumulative operational time are evaluated as special cases of performability. In addition to this evaluation, sensitivity analysis of the entire manufacturing system as well as each machining cell is performed, from which the time of a major repair policy and the optimal configuration among the alternative configurations of the system can be determined. Secondly, the recovery policies from the machine failures by computing the minimal number of redundant machines and also from the task failures by computing the minimum number of tasks equipped with detection schemes of task failure and reworked upon failure detection, to meet the timing requirements are optimized. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the work.

  • Since past till now, automotive wiring harness has been designed and produced under the method of part number list. However, the number of options has increased gradually on the basis of customer's needs and car manufacturer's policy, thereby bringing about an increase in the number of classified parts. Because of a large number of classified parts, cost estimates for manufacturing and production planning are more important than ever. However, the pre-existing manufacturing bill of material abbreviated as BOM is only focused on the list of materials used for actual manufacturing, and as such there have been limits to other fields or areas of usage except for manufacturing. In essence, the present paper is concerned with our study conducted on modular BOM as one of planning BOM. On such basis, we have been able to completely use a method by which to have access, make an option units' calculation in wiring harness manufacturing, and build an efficient system for cost estimates in manufacturing as well.

  • Modular construction is combined with manufacturing production process and conventional construction industry technique. Considering characteristic of modular construction production process, manufacturing facilities require indirect costs for utilities, equipment, and overall maintenance, which can affect modular units pricing. However, current modular construction cost classification is inadvertent to reflect the manufacturing overhead costs, because it is generally added as a percentage to sum of labor, material and equipment as it called in single cost pool used. This process is easy to estimate the total construction cost at the project starting points, but it brings on misunderstanding of project profit estimations by "cross subsidization phenomenon". To prevent this situation, in this research aims to provide modular construction overhead cost handling process at the detailed indirect cost calculation for manufacturing stage using Activity-Based Costing as one of the powerful method for overhead costs estimation and allocation. Using this research results, modular construction cost estimators have more detailed cost information of modular units and prevent to misallocate indirect costs. Also, it can be utilized to aid the understanding of the company's profit structure.

  • Today, manufacturers are forced to acknowledge that the life cycles of products are becoming shorter. In the case of the door trim assembly field, the highly frequent introduction of new products and the continuous increase in product varieties leads to the demand for redesigning assembly systems more often. Modular manufacturing systems can be an important issue in helping to overcome these problems. This paper presents the development of a modular assembly system for the door trim, and because it takes the change drives into consideration, this system is highly flexible in adapting to changes in the environment.

  • Modular Construction is regarded as having enhanced safety compared to traditional construction since most of modular manufacturing process in plants. Unlike general consideration for safety in modular construction, several industrial accident data and studies have pointed out that the accident rate of modular construction is not enough less as much as the practitioners have expected. It means that there is a clear need for improvement of safety management in modular construction. To enhance safety, it is necessary to identify the type and cause of accident through accident cases in order to prevent safety accident in advance. In this consideration, this study analyzed the types and causes of accidents through root cause analysis procedure with accident cases of U.S. OSHA. The classification was carried out in the order of process type, accident type and cause of accident. By following the classification criteria in this study, the causal factor was derived and the root cause map was created. Based on the analysis results, cross-analysis was conducted and it is shown that activity characteristics of modular construction are related to safety accidents. In addition, prevention methods to reduce safety accident by major activity are presented in terms of organizational, educational and technical aspects. This study contributes that the result can be used as the basic safety management in the manufacturing and construction process of modular construction.

  • In a fault-tolerant modern manufacturing systms characterized by the configuration, in which automated redundant machines prone to unexpected failures are interconnected with other complex subsystems such as AGV's, robots, computer control systems to produce complete parts, faulures together with repairs and reconfigurations should be considered as the three basic events to be modeled for computing the performance of manufacturing systems. In this papre, transient analysis is applied to modular cell manufacturing systems form a performability viewpoint whose modeling adantage is that various performanc e measures can be evaluated compositely in the context of application. The hypothertical modular cells are modeled firstly with hybrid decomposition method and availability measures as special cases of performability are computed and comments on performabililty modeling analysis are mentioned.

  • Modular construction can improve construction quality and accuracy through manufacturing process, and it allow massive production and cost savings by repeatedly producing the same unit. In particular, it is possible to reduce the time because the on-site work and the manufacturing process can be carried out at simultaneously. However, according to the modular construction project survey report, there is no significant difference regarding the average construction period between modular construction and conventional construction. This is due to schedule delay problems that occur during construction phase. Therefore, it is necessary to select alternatives to prevent schedule delay during on-site construction progressing. Especially, in case of large-scale modular construction project, on-site module assembly and manufacturing process are performed concurrently. Hence, identification of alternatives should be done at the co-occurrence by taking both manufacturing and on-site work process in to account. In this research, the management factors of large-scale modular construction project were identified through the IDEF0 modeling, and the quantity management model for manufacturing and assembly is developed. This will reduce the schedule delay problem that occurs in the progression on-site work of a large scale modular construction.
