Passive Earth Pressure Transition Behind Retaining Walls (옹벽의 변위에 따른 정지토압에서 수동토압까지의 변화)

  • An analytical solution procedure is described to estimate the developed passive lateral earth Pressures behind a vertical rigid retaintng wall rotating about its toe into a mass of cohesionless soil. Various stases of wall rotation, starting from an at-rest state to an initial Passive state to a full Passive state, are considered in the analysis. Condition of failure defined by a modified Mohr-coulomb criterion, together with equilibrium conditions, is used to obtain the necessary equations for the solution. Using methods of stress characteristics and numerical finite difference, a complete solution within and on the boundaries of the entire solution domain is made possible. The variations of the soil shear strength and the wall friction at various depths and stages of wall rotation are also taken into account in the analysis. The results predicted by the developed method of analysis are compared with those obtained from the experimental model tests on loose and dense sand. The comparisons show good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation Fin- ally, results of analytical parametric study are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall fric- tion on the resultant thrust and distribution of developed lateral earth pressures.

Numerical Calculation for Input Impedance of a Conductor Located in the Loss Media (손실 매질에 위치한 도체의 입력임피던스 수치계산)

  • This paper presents the numerical calculation for input impedance of a conductor located in the loss media by using the program with MATLAB. The input impedances of the conductor were numerically calculated with the moment of method. To increase an accuracy of results, the Galerkin's method which both the basic function and the weight function are the triangle function was applied. And by applying the modified image method, image sources of the conductor located in air were considered. According to the comparison between the current distributions at the conductor which were calculated with the MATLAB program and the NEC program, the reliability of the self-made program with MATLAB was obtained. In case of the conductor located in soil, which length are 1 m and 2 m, the input impedance were simulated as a function of both a conductivity and a frequency. Finally, input impedances and phases of the conductor located in soil were measured, and those results were compared with simulated results which calculated under the same conditions.

Attenuation of Chlorinated Pesticides(2,4-D, atrazine) Using Organoclays (유기점토를 이용한 유기염소계 농약(2,4-D, atrazine) 오염 저감)

  • Sorption of chlorinated pesticides such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and atrazine onto natural clays (montmorillonite and zeolite) modified with cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethyl-ammonium (HDTMA) and a natural soil was investigated using batch adsorbers. The clays were transformed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by the cation exchange between clay surface and HDTMA up to 100% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC). Physicochemical characteristics of the sorbents such as pH, PZC (point of zero charge), organic carbon content ($f_{oc}$), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were analyzed. Sorption isotherm models such as Freundlich and Langmuir were fitted to the experimental data, resulting Langmuir model ($R^2$ > 0.986) was fitted better than Freundlich model ($R^2$ > 0.973). Sorption capacity ($Q^0$) for 2,4-D and atrazine was in the order of HDTMA-montmorillonite > HDTMA-zeolite > natural soil corresponding to the increase in organic carbon content ($f_{oc}$). The sorption of the pesticides was also affected by pH. The sorption of 2,4-D decreased with the increase in pH, whereas that of atrazine was not changed. This indicated that the sorption capacity ($Q^0$) of 2,4-D and atrazine was not affected by the solution pH because they exist as anionic (deprotonated) forms at pH above pKa. The results indicate that organoclay has a promising potential to reduce chlorinated pesticides in the effluent from golf courses.

Effect of Biofertilizers on Vegetative Growth of Okra

  • An experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from March to July, 2001 to investigate the effect of biofertilizers on morpho-physiological characters of okra. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. There were nine treatments such as $\textrm{T}_0$ (control), $\textrm{T}_1$ (Azotobacter biofertilizer), $\textrm{T}_2$ (Azospirillum biofertilizer), $\textrm{T}_3$ (Azotobacter+Azospirillum biofertilizers), $\textrm{T}_4$ (Azotobacter+Cowdung 5 ton $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$), $\textrm{T}_5$ (Azospirillum+Cowdung 5 ton $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$), $\textrm{T}_6$(Azotobacter+Azospirillum+Cowdung 5 ton $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$), $\textrm{T}_7$ (Cowdung 5 ton $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$) and $\textrm{T}_8$ (60% Nitrogen). The experimental results revealed that significant variations exist among the treatments regarding morphological characters e.g. plant height, number of leaves/plant, stem base diameter, tap root length, and physiological characters like, root dry weight, leaf area index and crop growth rate. Number of leaves/plant, stem base diameter, root length, root dry weight, leaf area index and crop growth rate were found higher in $\textrm{T}_4$, $\textrm{T}_5$, $\textrm{T}_6$ and $\textrm{T}_8$ than the others. In all the parameters, $\textrm{T}_8$ gave the similar result with biofertilizers in combination with cowdung treatments and $\textrm{T}_7$ showed identical with $\textrm{T}_0$ (control). Biofertilizer treatments had insignificant effect on 1000-seed weight(g). Experimental results mentioned above revealed that morpho-physioligical characters of okra could be modified by the application of biofertilizer+cowdung. However, biofertilizers+Cowdung treatments were comparable to $\textrm{T}_8$(60% Nitrogen) in this study. This suggests that $\textrm{T}_4$ or $\textrm{T}_6$ or $\textrm{T}_5$ were more benificial in environmentally friendly okra cultivation and may be used as an alternative of inorganic nitrogen by saving cost of production and sustaining productivity.

A Study on the Assessment of the Contamination by Acid Mine Drainage in Abandoned Coal Mines (국내폐탄광의 산성폐수 오염도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Temporal and spatial comparisons of acid mine drainage contaminated waters are difficult because of the complex physico-chemical nature of the pollutant. In the present study, an acid mine drainage index has been developed and evaluated for the assessment of surface waters. AMD index is calculated using a modified arithmetic weighted index using seven parameters which are most indicative of AMD contamination, i. e. pH value, sulphate, iron, zinc, aluminum, copper and manganese. Weighting is used to express the relative indicator value of each parameter. The proposed AMD index is used to quantify contamination from acid mine drainage over ten different old mine sites and assess the degree of impact on surface on surface waters. As a result of AMD evaluation, the Sukbong Mine located near the Moonkyung province showed lowest AMD value indicating the worst acid mine drainage quality. In overall, Youngdong mine sites showed higher contaimination compared to the other mine sites including Youngsuh, Choongbu, Suhbu and Nambu area.

Influence of Rainfall-induced Wetting on Unsaturated Weathered Slopes (강우시 국내 불포화 풍화토 사면에서의 습윤영향 분석)

  • Surface failures of slopes in weathered soil are caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. These failures are mainly triggered by the deepening of the wetting band accompanied by a decrease in suction induced by the infiltrating water. This paper reports trends of rainfall-induced wetting band depth in two types of weathered soils that are commonly found in Korea. Both theoretical and numerical analyses are presented based on the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) obtained using filter paper as well as tensiometer tests. It is found that the magnitude of wetting front suction plays a key role in the stability of slopes in weathered soils. Theoretical analysis based on modified Green and Ampt model tends to underestimate the wetting band depth for typical Korean weathered soils. It was also deduced that for Korean weathered soils, the factor of safety drops rapidly once the wetting band depth of 1.2 m is reached.

  • Sampling disturbance can often introduce considerable errors in the laboratory estimation of geotechnical properties of soils. Accordingly, it causes inappropriative results in analysing field behavior. Therefore, a screw plate load test, one of in-situ test technique, is developed in this study, because in-situ testing techniques have advantages for the estimation of reliable geotechnical parameters. The screw plate load test, which was modified from the plate load test, conducts an experiment underneath ground by inserting a spiral type of auger screw. In this study, the structure and characteristics of the screw plate load test device are introduced in detail and the reliability of the device is examined through the analysis of the laboratory test results.

  • Marston (1913) and Spangler's (1982) theory was widely used in the analysis of the earth pressure of the narrow and long excavated ditch type backfield ground. Their theory was more clearly explained by expressing the minor principle stress arch connecting the minor principle stress link induced by interaction between the excavated wall surface and the backfilled earth. which was done by R.L. Handy(1985). Later C.G. Kellogg(1993) extended the study from vertical symmetric to incline symmetric in the backfill space type research. In the C.G. Kellogg's study, it is assumed that the resistance of wall friction on the sloping wall could be replaced by the internal friction angle in the sloping section bottom. In the study, the resistance of wall friction in the sloping section bottom, which was applied by C.G. Kellogg, would be different in magnitude with the resistance of wall friction in sloping section. The magnitude is expected to affect in the earth pressure calculation and verified by the soil test box, the C.G. Kellogg's theory, the numerical analysis and the modified C.G. Kellogg's theory considering the friction resistance to influence the incline wall.

Effect of Humic acid on the Distribution of the Contaminants with Black Shale (휴믹산이 black shale과 오염물질의 분포에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • Humic acids are macromolecules originated from natural water, soil, and sediment. The characteristics of humic acid enable it to change the distribution of metals as well as many kinds of organic contaminants and to determine the sorption of them from soil solution. To see the effect of humic acid on the removal rate of organic contaminants and heavy metals, batch-scale experiments were performed. As a natural geosorbent, black shale was used as a sorbent media, which showed hight sorption capacity of trichloroethylene (TCE), lead, cadmium and chromium. The effect of sorption-desorption, pH, ionic strength and the concentration of humic acid was taken into consideration. TCE sorption capacity by black shale was compared to natural bentonite and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) modified bentonite. The removal rate was good and humic acid also sorbed onto black shale very well. The organic part of humic acid could effectively enhance the partition of TCE and it act as an electron donor to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Cationic metal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) also removed from the water by black shale. With 3 mg/L of humic acid, both Pb(II) and Cd(II) were removed more than without humic acid. That could be explained by sorption and complexation with humic acid and that was possible when humic acid could change the hydrophobicity and solubility of heavy metals. Humic acid exhibited desorption-resistivity with black shale, which implied that black shale could be an alternative sorbent or material for remediation of organic contaminants and heavy metals.

Residues Analysis of Acetamiprid, Boscalid, Imidacloprid and Pyraclostrobin in the Minor Crop Mustard Green under Greenhouse Conditions for Evaluation of their Potentiality of PLS Violation

  • BACKGROUND: The demand for pesticide registration has kept increasing for minor crop cultivation in greenhouse since Positive List System (PLS) has been launched. Thus, much study on the evaluation of pesticide residues in minor crops is required to examine the demand. In this study, we evaluated residues of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin in the minor crop mustard green to provide the potential data for their registration. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pesticide granule formulations of acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were incorporated into soil and applied onto field soil surface at rates of 3 kg/10a, 6 kg/10a, 3 kg/10a and 6 kg/10a, respectively. The pesticides were also applied at the two times higher than the rates to compare the residues between the application rates. Mustard green seeds were sown 1 day after pesticide application and cultivated under greenhouse conditions. LC/MS/MS analyses coupled with a modified QuEChERs method were employed for determination of the pesticides in plant samples. The method limits of quantitation (LOQ) of the pesticides were 0.01 mg/kg, and the matrix calibration curves of the pesticides showed linearity with coefficient values of determination (r2) greater than 0.995. The average recovery values of the pesticides fortified in control samples at rates of LOQ and 10LOQ ranged from approximately 77.5% to 101.2% with relative standard deviation values lower than 14%. The pesticides in the mustard green samples cultivated for 53 days after sown were determined to be lower than the LOQ level. CONCLUSION: Acetamiprid, boscalid, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin were found at a level lower than 0.01 mg/kg in the minor crop mustard green. Thus, their residues in mustard green would not violate PLS under greenhouse conditions.
