The Performance Improvement for an Active Noise Contort of Automotive Intake System under Rapidly Accelerated Condition (급가속시 자동차 흡기계의 능동소음제어 성능향상)

  • The study of the automotive noise reduction has been concentrated on the reduction of the automotive engine noise because the engine noise is the major cause of automotive noise. However, many studies of automotive engine noise led to the interest of the noise reduction of the exhaust and intake system. Recently, the active control method is used to reduce the noise of an automotive exhaust and intake system. It is mostly used the LMS(Least-Mean-Square) algorithm as an algorithm of active control because the LMS algorithm can easily obtain the complex transfer function in real-time. Especially, Filtered-X LMS (FXLMS) algorithm is applied to an Active Noise Control system. However, the convergence performance of LMS algorithm went bad when the FXLMS algorithm was applied to an active control of the induction noise under rapidly accelerated driving conditions. So, in order to solve this problem, the modified FXLMS algorithm is proposed. In this study, the improvement of the control performance using the modified FXLMS algorithm under rapidly and suddenly accelerated driving conditions was identified. Also, the performance of an active control using the LMS algorithm under rapidly accelerated driving conditions was evaluated through the theoretical derivation using a chirp signal to have similar characteristics with the induction noise signal.

Design of a New VSS-Adaptive Filter for a Potential Application of Active Noise Control to Intake System (흡기계 능동소음제어를 위한 적응형 필터 알고리즘의 개발)

  • The filtered-x LMS(FX-LMS) algorithm has been applied to the active noise control(ANC) system in an acoustic duct. This algorithm is designed based on the FIR(finite impulse response) filter, but it has a slow convergence problem because of a large number of zero coefficients. In order to improve the convergence performance, the step size of the LMS algorithm was modified from fixed to variable. However, this algorithm is still not suitable for the ANC system of a short acoustic duct since the reference signal is affected by the backward acoustic wave propagated from a secondary source. Therefore, the recursive filtered-u LMS algorithm(FU-LMS) based on infinite impulse response(IIR) is developed by considering the backward acoustic propagation. This algorithm, unfortunately, generally has a stability problem. The stability problem was improved by using an error smoothing filter. In this paper, the recursive LMS algorithm with variable step size and smoothing error filter is designed. This recursive LMS algorithm, called FU-VSSLMS algorithm, uses an IIR filter. With fast convergence and good stability, this algorithm is suitable for the ANC system in a short acoustic duct such as the intake system of an automotive. This algorithm is applied to the ANC system of a short acoustic duct. The disturbance signals used as primary noise source are a sinusoidal signal embedded in white noise and the chirp signal of which the instantaneous frequency is variable. Test results demonstrate that the FU-VSSLMS algorithm has superior convergence performance to the FX-LMS algorithm and FX-LMS algorithm. It is successfully applied to the ANC system in a short duct.

  • We propose a modified form of the decision-directed least mean square (DD LMS) algorithm that is widely used in the optimization of self-adaptive equalizers, and show the modified version greatly improves the initial convergence properties of the conventional algorithm. Existing DD LMS regards the difference between a equalizer output and a quantization value for it as an error, and achieves an optimization of the equalizer based on minimizing the mean squared error cost function for the equalizer coefficients. This error generating method is useful for binary signal or a single-level signals, however, in the case of multi-level signals, it is not effective in the initialization of the equalizer. The modified DD LMS solves this problem by modifying the error generation. We verified the usefulness and performance of the modified DD LMS through experiments with multi-level signals under distortions due to intersymbol interference and additive noise.

  • An efficient adaptive nonlinear compensator, based on a wavelet transform domain adaptive Volterra filter along with a modified escalator algorithm, is proposed to speed up the convergence rate of an adaptive LMS algorithm.   • In this paper, we propose adaptive search channel estimate algorithm. The proposed algorithm is modified LMS algorithm which has a variable step size and parallel convolution. In simulation result, a error estimate accuracy of the proposed algorithm is about -20 dB and general LMS algorithm is about 10 dB. The proposed algorithm is better error estimate accuracy than general LMS algorithm.

  • Recently Intake noise has been extensively studied to reduce the engine noise. In order to diminish intake noise several resonators were added to the intake system. However this can cause a reduction of engine output power and an increase of fuel consumption. In this study, active noise control simulation of the Filtered-x LMS algorithm is applied real instrumentation intake noise data under rapid acceleration because intake noise is more excessively increased under the such a harsh condition. But the FXLMS algorithm has poor control performance when the system is disturbed. Thus modified FXLMS algorithm using L-point running average filter is developed to improve the control performance under the rapid acceleration and disturbance. The noise reduction quantity of modified Filtered-x LMS algorithm is more than original one in two cases. In the case of control for real instrumentation intake noise data, maximum residual noise of modified FXLMS algorithm is 2.5 times less than applied the FXLMS and also in the case of disturbed, the modified FXLMS algorithm shows excellent control performance but FXLMS algorithm cat not control.

  • We have proposed the adaptive noise reduction algorithm using the MDFT. The algorithm proposed use the linear prediction coefficients of the AR method based on Sign algorithm that is the modified LMS instead of the least mean square(LMS). The signals with a random noise tracking performance are examined through computer simulations and confirmed that the high speed adaptive noise reduction processing system is realized with rapid convergence.

  • This paper presents a modified filtered-x least mean square (FxLMS) algorithm to improve the stability of active noise control (ANC) system in realistic environment. A real-time ANC system employing modified FxLMS is designed and implemented on digital signal processor (DSP) board. The ANC system is evaluated for cancelling various tonal frequency noises in the range from 100 to 500 Hz and the performance is measured in terms of sound pressure level (SPL) attenuation. Experiment results show that a quiet zone with maximum 20 dB SPL attenuation can be generated around the location of error microphone.

  • Many industrial processes that are operated by rotating machines and large air-moving fans are excellent examples to which the single channel ANC systems can be applied. In these environments, the active noise control techniques are most popular nowadays. In this paper, a modified LMS algorithm(EAC, Error Amplitude Compared) is proposed. The algorithm is a kind of variable step-size LMS-type algorithm. Computer simulations show that the proposed EAC algorithm achieves a better convergence time than a conventional VS(Variable Step-Size) algorithm, Also, this algorithm has been implemented by using and experimental duct system.
