  • In this paper, path-independent values of the J-integral in the fininte element context for arbitrary two-dimensional and three-dimensional crack configurations in welds are presented. For the fracture mechanics analysis of cracks in welds, residual stress analysis and fracture analysis must be performed simultaneously. In the analysis of cracked bodies containing residual stress, the usual domain integral formulation results in path-dependent values of the J-integral. This paper discusses modifications of the conventional J-integral that yield path independence in the presence of residual stress generated by welding. The residual stress problem is treated as an initial strain problem and the J-integral modified for this class of problem is used. And a finite element program which can evaluate the J-integral for cracks in two-dimensional and three-dimensional residual stress bearing bodies is developed using the modified J-integral definition. The situation when residual stress only is present is examed as is the case when mechanical stresses are applied in conjunction with a residual stress field.

  • High temperature low cycle fatigue crack growth behavior is investigated over a range of two temperatures and various frequencies in SUS 304 stainless steel. It is found that low frequency and temperature can enhance time-dependent crack growth. With high temperature, low frequency and long crack length, ${\Delta}J_c/{\Delta}J_ f$, the ratio of creep J integral range to fatigue J integral range is increased and time-dependent crack growth is accelerated. Interaction between ${\Delta}J_f$ and ${\Delta}J_c$ is occured at high frequency and low temparature and ${\Delta}J_c$, creep J integral range is fracture mechanical parameter on transition from cycle-dependent to time dependent crack growth in creep temperature region.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a numerical technique for analyzing crack driving forces in multi-phase materials. The analysis was based on finite element method coupled with a virtual crack extension technique which is known as the most efficient tool in computational fracture mechanics analysis. The modified J-integral method, proposed by Miyamoto and Kikuchi for the analysis of dual-phase material was carried out by subtracting the J-values for contours surrounding each phase boundary from the J-values for overall contour. It was shown that the proposed numerical procedure, based on the modified J-integral coupled with a virtual crack extension technique, can be used as an effective numerical tool for determining crack driving forces in multi-phase materials.

  • This paper provides a comparison of the J-integral estimation method under combined primary and secondary stress in the R6, RCC-MR A16 code. The comparisons of each code are based on finite element analysis using ABAQUS with regard to the crack shape, crack depth, and magnitude of secondary load. The estimate of the R6 code is conservative near $L_r=1$, and that of the RCC-MR A16 code is conservative near $L_r=0$. As a result, this paper proposes a modified method of J-integral estimation in the R6, RCC_MR A16 code. The J-integral using the modified method corresponds to the finite element analysis result.

  • Since the linear elastic fracture analysis has been proved to be insufficient in predicting the failure of strain hardening materials, a number of fracture concepts have been studied which remain applicable in the presence of plasticity near a crack tip. This work thereby presents a new finite element model to predict the elastic-plastic crack-tip field and fatigue life of center-cracked panels(CCP) with ductile fracture under large-scale yielding conditions. Also, this study has been carried out to investigate the path-dependence of J-integral within the plastic zone for elastic-perfectly plastic, bilinear elastic-plastic, and nonlinear elastic-plastic materials. Based on the incremental theory of plasticity, the p-version finite element is employed to account for the accurate values of J-integral, the most dominant fracture parameter, and the shape of plastic zone near a crack tip by using the J-integral method. To predict the fatigue life, the conventional Paris law has been modified by substituting the range of J-value denoted by ${\Delta}J$ for ${\Delta}K$. The experimental fatigue test is conducted with five CCP specimens to validate the accuracy of the proposed model. It is noted that the relationship between the crack length a and ${\Delta}K$ in LEFM analysis shows a strong linearity, on the other hand, the nonlinear relationship between a and ${\Delta}J$ is detected in EPFM analysis. Therefore, this trend will be depended especially in the case of large scale yielding. The numerical results by the proposed model are compared with the theoretical solutions in literatures, experimental results, and the numerical solutions by the conventional h-version of the finite element method.

  • In this paper, we establish the generalized Cameron-Storvick type theorem on function space. We then give relationships involving the generalized Cameron-Storvick type theorem, modified generalized integral transform and modified convolution product. A motivation of studying the generalized Cameron-Storvick type theorem is to generalize formulas and results with respect to the modified generalized integral transform on function space. From the some theories and formulas in the functional analysis, we can obtain some formulas with respect to the translation theorem of exponential functionals.

  • The integrity of laser welded structures is decided with fracture strength and fatigue strength. This study presents fracture behavior considering residual stress in the laser welding. Experiments are conducted and analyses are performed to explore the influence of residual stress on fracture behavior of bead-on laser welded compact specimen. Fracture experiments are performed using ASTM 1820. The performed analyses included thermo-elasto-plastic analyses for residual stress and subsequent J-integral calculation. A modified J integral is calculated in the presence of residual stresses. The J-integral is path-independent for combination of residual stress field and stress due to mechanical loading. The results indicates that the tensile residual stress near crack front bring the low fracture load while the compressive residual stress bring the high fracture load compared to no residual stress specimen. These results quantitatively understand the influence of residual stress on fracture behavior.

  • This paper investigates the effects of T-stress and plastic hardening mismatch on the interfacial crack-tip stress field via finite element analyses. Plane strain elastic-plastic crack-tip fields are modeled with both MBL formulation and a full SEC specimen under pure bending. Modified Prandtl slip line fields illustrate the effects of T-stress on crack-tip constraint in homogeneous material. Compressive T-stress substantially reduces the interfacial crack-tip constraint, but increases the J-contribution by lower hardening material, J$\_$L/. For bimaterials with two elastic-plastic materials, increasing plastic hardening mismatch increases both crack-tip stress constraint in the lower hardening material and J$\_$L/. The fracture toughness for bimaterial joints would consequently be much lower than that of lower hardening homogeneous material. The implication of unbalanced J-integral in bimaterials is also discussed.
