A study on Optimizing Mobile 3D Game Engine using JSR-184

  • This study focuses on modeling mobile 3D game engine and suggesting modified skinned-mesh schema based on JSR-184 in order to improve the performance in terms of memory consumption and time complexity. Most of the 3D games have used OpenGL-ES low-level APls, which may limit portability and fast developing time. Hence, the 3D mobile game engine providing high-level APls which works on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phones on J2ME, is proposed here in order to optimize the performance for Java environment abiding JSR-184 standard. To prove performance enhancement, skinned-mesh schema on JSR-184 engine is modified and tested. The experimental results are shown.

  • 최근, 3차원 슈팅 게임들은 빠른 화면 전환과 카메라 시야에 있는 오브젝트들을 상대로 게임을 한다. 특히 온라인 게임에서는 플레이어의 시야에 있지 않은 상대 오브젝트들의 위협성을 인식하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 변형된 절두체 컬링을 이용하여 3차원 FPS 게임에서의 오브젝트를 효율적으로 탐색하는 방법을 제시하였다. 플레이어가 감지하지 못하는 오브젝트를 위해 플레이어와 카메라 위치를 일치 시켰으며, 위협적인 오브젝트들의 개수를 파악하기 위해 플레이어와 오브젝트들의 거리를 이용하였다. 제안한 방법은 향후 3차원 FPS 게임의 발전에 주요한 역할을 할 것이다.

  • 온라인게임을 개발하는 과정에서 게임을 검증하기 위한 베타 테스트는 반드시 필요한 과정이다. 베타테스트를 통해 예상치 못한 문제점을 발견하고 사용자들의 행태를 분석하여 단점을 보완한다. 베타테스트를 통해 많은 단점을 보완할 수 있지만 게임컨텐츠가 외부로 공개되며 시간과 비용이 많이 든다는 단점이 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 베타테스트 기간과 비용을 줄이기 위한 방법으로 캐릭터간의 성장 밸런스와 캐릭터간의 전투에 대한 시뮬레이션 모델을 제안하였다. 그리고 이를 트라비아 온라인에 적용하여 개발 기간의 단축을 가져올 수 있었다.

  • 게임은 이용하는 사람이 선택할 수 있는 자율성의 폭이 넓은 열린 문화(open culture)이다. 즉, 게임 소비자의 참여가 적극적으로 요구되고 수용된다. 그런 의미에서, 원작 게임에 여러 가지 변형을 가하는 모드(MOD)는 게임 이용자의 적극적인 참여를 나타내는 대표적인 사례이자 게임 제작 과정에서 소비자의 참여 가능성을 보여주는 예시이다. 본 연구는 모드 게임의 대표적인 사례 중 Half-Life 모드의 분석을 통해, 게임 제작 과정의 발전적 측면에서 본 소비자 참여 가능성에 대해 논의한다.

한국 온라인게임 산업의 서비스 혁신패턴 분석 (Analysis of Innovation Patterns of Korean Online Game Industry)

  • Using the service innovation system model, the development of Korean online game industry is analyzed. The model proposed by Gallouj (2002) is modified in order to reflect IT service characteristics such as network externalities. Success factors and innovations patterns of Korean online game industry are examined. First, at the early stage of her growth, Korean online game industry was not supported or coordinated by any Government policies unlike DRAM, CDMA or TFT-LCD. Many parts of technical and service innovations were unintentionally initiated by online game developing ventures without predeterminde strategies. Second, the online game industry is basically a service industry so that users' needs and technical and service characteristics are intertwined to produce innovation. The innovation system of the online game industry is quite different from conventional product technological innovation systems in a sense that there are no blueprints for innovation as well as major players in the system. Third, Government's policies for promotion of IT industry such as the broadband infrastructure installation policy, the hi-tech venture promotion policy and the military exemption policy contributed greatly to development of the online game industry. However, these policy tools were not intended for online game industry but in the end gave a great impact on the service innovation system of the online game industry.

사용자의 생체 신호를 이용한 감성 컴퓨팅 게임 개발 (Developing Affective Computing Game with Player's Bio-Signal)

  • 본 연구에서는 사용자의 생체 신호를 반영한 감성 컴퓨팅 게임을 개발하였다. 생체 신호 측정을 위해 GSR(Galvanic Skin Response), FSR(Force Sensing Resistor), 온도 센서(Infrared Thermometer)를 장착한 마우스를 제작하였다. 해당 마우스를 통해 게임을 하는 사용자의 생체 신호를 비침투적으로 측정한다. 측정된 데이터는 실시간으로 처리되어 사용자의 긴장도를 3단계로 구분하며 구분된 긴장도는 반영되어 NPC(Non-Player Character)의 정서 반응과 스토리 분기의 변화를 가능하게 한다. NPC의 반응과 스토리 분기의 제작을 위해 Live 2d, Inkle Script를 사용하였다. 본 연구를 통해 사용자의 생체 신호를 이용한 감성 컴퓨팅 게임 제작에 하나의 방법론을 제시한다.

Online Recognition of Handwritten Korean and English Characters

  • In this study, an improved HMM based recognition model is proposed for online English and Korean handwritten characters. The pattern elements of the handwriting model are sub character strokes and ligatures. To deal with the problem of handwriting style variations, a modified Hierarchical Clustering approach is introduced to partition different writing styles into several classes. For each of the English letters and each primitive grapheme in Korean characters, one HMM that models the temporal and spatial variability of the handwriting is constructed based on each class. Then the HMMs of Korean graphemes are concatenated to form the Korean character models. The recognition of handwritten characters is implemented by a modified level building algorithm, which incorporates the Korean character combination rules within the efficient network search procedure. Due to the limitation of the HMM based method, a post-processing procedure that takes the global and structural features into account is proposed. Experiments showed that the proposed recognition system achieved a high writer independent recognition rate on unconstrained samples of both English and Korean characters. The comparison with other schemes of HMM-based recognition was also performed to evaluate the system.

  • I Previous scrolling-shooter games cannot represent various emotions of characters as a personality and situations, so it can only represent simple and momentary emotions. This paper purpose to develop and applying an artificial emotion which gives emotional responses and actions to character as a personality and situations of a character. So we proposed an artificial emotion that receives emotional stimulus, analyzes what emotion will be generated, controls various emotions by a personality and time, and exports a current emotion. To visualize and to test an artificial emotion, We made a scrolling shooter game which has two characters who have a different personality each other. And we applied an artificial emotion to that game, modified it to be able to change status as emotions. To estimate a satisfaction of a artificial emotion for a scrolling-shooter game, we made up a question to two groups-one has people who likes a scrolling shooter game, the other has people who doesn't.

"Spot the differences" Game: An Interactive Method That Engage Students in Organic Chemistry Learning

  • For the first time, the spot the differences (STD) game was employed in the teaching of basic organic chemistry course. Three sets of paired pictures associated with selected topics in organic chemistry were presented to the students and they were required to spot the differences between the two pictures. Based on the students' pre and post self-assessment, the STD game resulted in several positive learning outcomes as indicated in the students' reflective writing, including knowledge recall, deeper understanding of a subject, enhanced analytical skill, motivation and fun-filled learning, learning from peers and self-empowerment in learning. The STD game is a desirable teaching and learning tool, as learning in an entertaining and interactive way is highly sought after in today's classroom, especially to novice students. In the future, the STD game can be modified and implemented to cater the needs of different courses and topics.

소설 및 게임의 트랜스미디어에서 시각적 요소 분석 - 원작 "주선"의 세계관과 캐릭터를 중심으로 - (Analysis of Visual Elements in Transmedia of Novels and Games - Focus on the Worldview and Characters of the original "Zhu Xian" -)

  • In the era of transmedia, it has become normalized to use different media for the same content. The paper of this research is, in such a transmedia era, in order to meet the needs of the public, what elements should be considered when adapting a novel into a game. The study takes the novel "Zhu Xian" and its game adaptation "Zhu Xian Hand Tour" as the research object, focusing on the worldview and characters, analyzing the elements needed for the adaptation, and uses a questionnaire to understand players' satisfaction with the elements of the adaptation. The results show that the audience satisfaction of the worldview and character visualization elements in the adaptation of "The Zhu Xian Hand Tour" is high, but the basic information and appearance elements in the ethnic composition of the worldview and the character visualization elements need to be modified. The study can provide a design suggestion for game planners and designers.
