Fundamental Study for the Development of an Optimum Hull Form (최적선형개발에 대한 기초연구)

  • A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance has been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP(sequential quadratic programming) to search for different optimal hull forms. The frictional resistance has been estimated using the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula, and the wave resistance has been evaluated using a potential-flow panel method that is based on Rankine sources with nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of a hull surface has been modified using B-spline surface patches, during the whole optimization process. The numerical analyses have been carried out for the modified Wilgey hull at three different speeds (Fn=0.25, 0.316, 0.408), and the calculation results were compared.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP( sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface patches. To verify the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Wigley hull and Series 60 Cb=0.6 hull are performed and the results obtained after the numerical calculations are compared with the initial hulls.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique.   • This paper newly proposes a mesh regularization method for the enhancement of the efficiency in sheet metal forming analysis. The regularization method searches for distorted elements with appropriate searching criteria and constructs patches including the elements to be modified. Each patch is then extended to a three-dimensional surface in order to obtain the information of the continuous coordinates. In constructing the surface enclosing each patch, NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface is employed to describe a three-dimensional free surface. On the basis of the constructed surface, each node is properly arranged to form unit elements as close as to a square. The analysis results with the proposed method are compared to the results from the direct forming analysis without mesh regularization in order to confirm the validity of the method.

  • The present study concentrates on the weak-scatterer hypothesis for the nonlinear wave-body interaction problems. In this method, the free surface boundary conditions are linearized on the incoming wave profile and the exact body motion is applied. The considered problems are the diffraction problem near a circular cylinder and the ship response in oblique waves. The numerical method of solution is a Rankine panel method. The Rankine panel method of this study adopts the higher-order B spline basis function for the approximation of physical variables. A modified Euler scheme is applied for the time stepping, which has neutral stability. The computational result shows some nonlinear behaviors of disturbance waves and wave forces. Moreover, the ship response shows very close results to experimental data.

The state variables calculated from its original mesh geometry are mapped into the new mesh geometry for the next stage or incremental step of a forming analysis.   • An analysis on thermal buckling and postbuckling of composite laminated plates reinforced with a low amount of graphene platelets is performed in the current investigation. It is assumed that graphaene platelets are randomly oriented and uniformly dispersed in each layer of the composite media. Elastic properties of the nanocomposite media are obtained by means of the modified Halpin-Tsai approach which takes into account the size effects of the graphene reinforcements. By means of the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ type of geometrical nonlinearity, third order shear deformation theory and nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) based isogeometric finite element method, the governing equations for the thermal postbuckling of nanocomposite plates in rectangular shape are established. These equations are solved by means of a direct displacement control strategy. Numerical examples are given to study the effects of boundary conditions, weight fraction of graphene platelets and distribution pattern of graphene platelets. It is shown that, with introduction of a small amount of graphene platelets into the matrix of the composite media, the critical buckling temperature of the plate may be enhanced and thermal postbuckling deflection may be alleviated.

  • A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance has been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) to search for optimized hull form and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. The friction resistance is estimated using the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula and the wave making resistance is evaluated using a potential-flow panel method based on Rankine sources with nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches during the optimization process. Using the Series 60 hull ($C_B$ =0.60) as a base hull, the optimization procedure is applied to obtain an optimal hull that produces the minimum total resistance for the given constraints. To verify the validity of the result, the original model and the optimized model obtained by the optimization process have been built and tested in a towing tank. It is shown that the optimal hull obtained around $13\%$ reduction in the total resistance and around $40\%$ reduction in the residual resistance at a speed tested compared with that of the original one, demonstrating that the present optimization tool can be effectively used for efficient hull form designs.

Analysis of Steady and Unsteady Flow Around a Ship Using a Higher-Order Boundary Element Method (고차경계요소법에 의한 선체주위 유동해석)

  • An efficient and accurate scheme has been constructed by taking advantages of the hi-quadratic spline scheme and the higher-order boundary element method selectively depending on computation domains. Boundary surfaces are represented by 8-node boundary elements to describe curved surfaces of a ship and its neighboring free surface more accurately. The variation of the velocity potential complies with the characteristics of the 8-node element on the body surface. But on the free surface, it is assumed to follow that of the hi-quadratic spline scheme. By which, the free surface solution is free from numerical damping and has better numerical dispersion property. As numerical examples, steady and unsteady Neumann-Kelvin problems are considered. Numerical results for a submerged spheroid, Series 60($C_B=0.6$) and a modified support the proposed method. Finally, a new upstream radiation condition is derived using a wave equation operator in order to deal with problems for subcritical reduced frequency. The relevance of this operator has been confirmed in the case of unsteady Kelvin source potential.

  • 본 논문에서는 사용자가 NURBS 곡면을 다양한 형태로 변형을 손쉽게 할 수 있는 수정된 유한요소법을 이용한 곡면 변형의 방법을 제시한다. 수정된 유한요소법은 NURBS 기저함수를 전통적 유한요소법의 형상함수를 대신하여 유한요소해석을 한다. 모델링된 객체는 NURBS 곡면으로 이루어져 있고, 각각의 세그먼트별로 나누어진 기저함수와 제어점으로 구성되어있기 때문에 번거롭게 요소와 형상함수를 따로 구하지 않아도 되며, 자체 보간 방식이므로 기존의 유한요소법에 비해 적은 요소와 절점으로 곡면을 해석 할 수 있다. NURBS 곡면 변형은 각각의 제어점에 의해 구역이 나눠지고 각 구역은 변형될 지점과 가장 가까운 제어점으로 구성된 구역의 제어점들을 변형시킬 지점과 각 제어점의 거리 비례에 따라서 제어점 들의 속도가 지정되어 변형을 완성한다. 제시된 변형 방법은 다른 변형들과 같이 초기 입력에 의해 변형이 한 순간에 진행되는 것이 아니라 점진적 변형이 일어나며, NURBS 의 특징인 전체 제어점 변형으로 인해 의도하지 않은 변형이 일어나는 것을 변형 중간에 각각의 제어점의 속도를 제어함으로써 사용자의 의도한 변형으로 빠른 시간에 완성할 수 있게 된다.
