  • This study investigated Renaissance and Baroque architectural characteristics found in contemporary public buildings in Seoul, which are National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul Branch(MMCA) and Dongdaemun Design Plaza(DDP). Among H. $W{\ddot{o}}lfflin^{\prime}s$ five categories for Renaissance-Baroque art study, four categories (Clearness/Unclearness, Plane/Recession, Closed form/Open form, Multiplicity/Unity) are applied for the analysis as the architectural issues of Transparency/Concealment, Exhibited/Experienced Depth, Formal/Figural, and Composed harmony/Generated Unity. As a result, MMCA showed the characteristics of the extreme of Modern classic such as transparency, homogenization of space, formalism, and composition of multiple elements. Meanwhile, the study could find various Baroque characteristics from DDP such as separation of indoor and outdoor, phenomenological depth, rule breaking, and generation of figure. The study finally argued that DDP would not be an anti-modern, but try to inherit and overcome the modern architecture to explore different possibilities, and that the similar relationship between Renaissance and Baroque art could be found in these two cases.

  • This study aims to examine the expressive characteristics and meanings of modern in contemporary fashion, especially focusing on Vogue and The New York Times. First, modern signified originality born out of borderless fusion and compromise. It was also expressed to signify diversity and tolerance not bounded by conventions, TPO, areas, ethnic groups, seasons, or gender. Second, modern meant functionality encompassing the comfort of body and mind. It was used to refer to convenient mobility and activity fit for the lifestyle of busy modern people. Third, lightness and naturalness were used as new meanings of beauty in modern fashion. In the fashion of the twenty-first century, the principal meaning of modern was lightness, which was sought after in everything including materials, modes of wearing, and ways of thinking. Finally, modern fashion was expressed as a democratic tool for social reform and used in the meaning of enlightenment to benefit society as well as oneself. The results of this study indicate that constant changes in trends, lifestyles, and psychology of contemporary society have the potential to give new meaning to the concept and the use of the term modern.

  • This study attempted to clarify the modern transition process of the urban space through the construction and change of the Imperial Palace as a central facility in Seoul. The road renovation of Seoul, which started in 1895, has established a modern, circular transportation system centered on Gyeongun-gung Palace, the Imperial Palace along with the tram line. In this urban structure, the imperial palace as a central facility of the former monarchy, unlike the previous palaces, could not be located at the top of a road with a longitudinal axis, and it expanded its territory around foreign legionaries and placed a new government office around the perimeter. However, the royal palace was moved to Changdeokgung Palace in 1907 with the throne of Sunjong. With the creation of Changdeokgung, which is the periphery of Seoul, as new royal palace, the status of the imperial palace in the city was remarkably weakened, and Gyeongun-gung, located in the center of Seoul, was also reduced to the current Deoksugung area, turning into an urban facility facing a modern street.

  • The photoelectric effect is a representative phenomenon explaining the particle nature of light and is an important theme that led to the transition from classical physics to modern physics. Although the secondary school curriculum deals with the photoelectric effect, teachers and students are often confused with terms because the explanation of the 'light intensity' is different from that of electromagnetic waves. Hence, this study examines how modern physics textbooks explain the intensity of light through photon model. We analyzed the photoelectric effect unit of 10 modern physics textbooks. Results show that there are two different types of representation on 'light intensity.' Especially those two different types were found even within a textbook. Modern physics textbooks do not seem to provide a unified presentation of the light and cautions to describe the photoelectric effect and its interpretation are suggested for teaching light intensity in modern physics.

Korean shamanism has been the core of the traditional folk religions. so that it has had a great effect upon the formation of Korean's mind and custom. And its magical power remains unabated even today. Modern shamanism in the Hong-Sung area has been changed under the influence of the shamanism in the Seoul-Koungki area. Therefore modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area is similar to shaman's costume in the Seoul-Koungki area. Modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area has only 5 or 6 kinds. These consist of Pulsajangsam, Chulik, Kugunbok, Mongduri and Wonsam. But there are some differences between modern shaman's costume and traditional costume in the formative character, Modern shaman's costume in the Hong-Sung area has became simpler in the formative character and more gorgeous in color or adornment than that of the traditional costume.

  • According to the North Korean documents , North Korean government have emphasized the development of the Koryo medicine (traditional korean medicine) and encouraged the combination of the Koryo and the modern medicine. It is regarded that this attitude arose from the ruler's will toward independency in the medical field and at the same time the lack of modern medical resources . Combinations of the Koryo medicine and the modern medicine in the clinical textbooks are classified as follows: first, mixed medication of the Koryo and the modern medicine. Second, combination of the traditional acupuncture(or moxibustion) and the medication of modern medicines. Third, injection of modern medicines at acupoints. Forth, an intramuscular or an intravenous injection of the Koryo medicine. Fifth, anesthesia using Koryo medicine. Sixth, simple surgery at the acupoints. Lastly, combination of injection and the traditional therapy(eg. acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping) Despite of many achievements in the field of combined medical treatment, recent economic failure and severe famine for several years caused collapse of the health care delivery system in North Korea, and it is hard to find combined practices actually.
