This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.

The Smart bi-directional pile load test with variable end plate overcomes the shortcoming of the Osterberg cell test. It is possible that the ultimate bearing capacity of piles can be known by using two different end plates. The first step is to measure end bearing capacity with smaller end plate and the second step is similar to the conventional O-cell test. In this study, model test was performed to evaluate the smart bi-directional pile load test in sand. Vertical displacement of the model pile were messured at the axial loading condition.

The bearing capacity of open-ended piles is affected by the degree of soil plugging, which is quantified by the IFR. There is not at present a design criterion for open-ended piles that explicitly considers the effect of IFR on pile load capacity In order to investigate this effect, model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on instrumented open-ended piles. The results of these tests show that the IFR increases with increasing relative density and increasing horizontal stress of soils. The unit base and shaft resistances decrease with increasing IFR. Based on the results of the model pile tests, new empirical relations for base load capacity and shaft load capacity of open-ended piles are proposed. In order to check the accuracy of predictions made with the proposed equations, the equations were applied to the full-scale pile load test preformed in this study, Based on the comparisons with the pile load test results, the proposed equations appear to produce satisfactory predictions.

It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.

Bi-directional load test is one of O-cell tests. The O-cell test is a system which may be used for performing static load tests on cast in situ reinforced concrete bored piles. The technique was devised and developed by Osterberg of Northwestern University(USA) and has been in use around the world. The principle of the method is that an O-cell is installed in a cast in situ bored pile base. Once the pile concrete reaches its design strength the cell is connected to an hydraulic pump and pressured. Pressurization causes the cell to expand, developing an upward force on the section of pile above the cell loads, pile movements and strains within the pile then enable the capacity of the pile and its load settlement curves to be ascertained. The O-cell pile load test with variable end plate is operated on second steps - the first step is to confirming end bearing capacity with variable end plate and the second step is similar to the conventional O-cell test. In the study, To calculate ultimate capacity of bi-directional load test using model with the pile with variable end plate O-cell.

In case that pile cap is in direct contact with underlying soil, the bearing mechanism for pile groups, including direct bearing effect of cap and its induced influence on pile-soil-cap interaction, should be properly considered. In this paper, the effects of pile caps on behaviors of pile groups in sandy soils were investigated by model tests, which consist of tests on 3 by 3 pile groups with/without contact on subsoil, single pile with/without contact and cap as a shallow foundation. Also, the influences of pile spacing in group piles on contact effects were investigated. The test results showed that the load carrying capacity of pile cap was large enough not to be ignored. However, the interaction effects due to contact between cap and subsoils were not revealed obviously in working load range. And in the design of pile groups, the bearing effect of pile cap when contacted with subsoils, can be reflected by simply summing up load settlement behaviors of each cap and group piles without contact.
A centrifuge model study is carried out to investigate the behavior of pile subject to negative skin friction induced by pile installation, ground water drawdown and surcharge loading. A single end-bearing pile is examined as the induced negative skin friction would induce the most severe stress on the pile structural material as compared to friction piles. In addition, the behavior of the pile under simultaneous negative skin friction and dead/live loads is examined. To facilitate detailed interpretations of the test results, the model setup is extensively instrumented and involves elaborate test control schemes. To further examine the phenomenon of negative skin friction on an end-bearing pile, finite element analyses were conducted. The numerical analysis is first validated against the centrifuge test data and subsequently extended to examine the effects of pile slenderness ratio, surcharge intensity and pile-soil stiffness ratio on the degree of mobilization of negative skin friction induced on the pile. Finally experimental and numerical studies are conducted to examine the effect of applied transient live load on pile subject to negative skin friction.

Rural multi-purpose buildings needs to ensure their safety against various disasters. Therefore, a pile foundation, which is a foundation type that can transmit the load of the structure to the bedrock layer, has been designed. The pile foundation method is largely divided into driving piles method and pre-bored pile method. Recently, in order to respond to the Noise and Vibration Control Act and related environmental complaints, construction of pile foundation adopts pre-bored pile method. The bearing capacity of the pre-bored pile method is calculated through a load test in situ. However, a disadvantage stems in that it is difficult to measure the ultimate bearing capacity due to field conditions. Therefore, in this study, the skin frictional force of pre-bored pile was measured through a model test in laboratory for each pile filling material. In result, the pile filling material with using circulating resources shows superior skin frictional force than ordinary portland cement. This study also judged that the result can be applied in place of ordinary Portland cement in the field.

In this study, laboratory model pile-load test and finite element analysis were carried out to compare and analyze the strain behaviour around the model pile tip. In order to simulate the pile load, both the LCM(load control method)and DCM(displacement control method) were introduced to determine which one is appropriate for the FE simulation. In contrast to the previous simulation method, two interface elements around the model pile were used to consider the slip effect in the finite element analysis and its results were compared to the model test. Through this study it was found that the degree of non-associated flow was a dominant factor in terms of numerical solution convergence. In addition, an improved FE mesh was required to obtain the symmetric distribution of the maximum shear strain contour.

The safety of pile foundation is getting declined when the pile foundation acting on lateral load is exposed by dredging. So appropriate reinforcement is needed for stability secure. Thus, in this study, the stability variation and reinforcement range caused by dredging is estimated on the basis of down scale test. The scale effect is determined by real scale numerical analysis. the behavior of pile by dredging stages is estimated by load control type. The credibility is verified through the comparison between down scale model test and numerical analysis.
