Wearable and ubiquitous micro systems will be greatly growing and their related devices should be self-powered in order to avoid the replacement of finite power sources, for example, by scavenging energy from the environment. With ever reducing power requirements of both analog and digital circuits, power scavenging approaches are becoming increasingly realistic. One approach is to drive an electromechanical converter from ambient motion or vibration. Vibration-driven generators based on electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric technologies have been demonstrated. Among various generator types proposed so far, piezoelectric generator possesses considerable potential in micro system. To overcome low mechanical-to-electric energy conversion, the piezoelectric device should activate in resonance mode in response to external vibration. Normally, the external vibration excretes at low frequency ranging 0.1 to 200 Hz, whereas the resonant frequencies of the devices are fixed as constant. Therefore, keeping their resonant mode in varying external vibration can be one of important points in enhancing the conversion efficiency. We investigated the possibility of use of multi-bender type piezoelectric devices. To match the external vibration frequency with the device resonant frequency, the various devices with different resonant frequency were chosen.

This study proposes an enhanced switching pattern that can improve energy transfer efficiency in an active cell-balancing circuit using a multiwinding transformer. This balancing circuit performs cell balancing by transferring energy stored in a specific cell with high energy to another cell containing low energy through a multiwinding transformer. The circuit operates in flyback and buck-boost modes in accordance with the energy transfer path. In the conventional flyback mode, the leakage inductance of the transformer and the stray inductance component of winding can transfer energy to an undesired path during the balancing operation. This case results in cell imbalance during the cell-balancing process, which reduces the energy transfer efficiency. An enhanced switching pattern that can effectively perform cell balancing by minimizing the amount of energy transferred to the nontarget cells due to the leakage inductance components in the flyback mode is proposed. Energy transfer efficiency and balancing speed can be significantly improved using the proposed switching pattern compared with that using the conventional switching pattern. The performance improvements are verified by experiments using a 1 W prototype cell-balancing circuit.
By adopting a 2D time-dependent wave code, we investigate how mode-converted waves at the Ion-Ion Hybrid (IIH) resonance and compressional waves propagate in 2D density structures with a wide range of field-aligned wavenumbers to background magnetic fields. The simulation results show that the mode-converted waves have continuous bands across the field line consistent with previous numerical studies. These waves also have harmonic structures in frequency domain and are localized in the field-aligned heavy ion density well. Our results thus emphasize the importance of a field-aligned heavy ion density structure for ultra-low frequency wave propagation, and suggest that IIH waves can be localized in different locations along the field line.
Theory of Earth's free oscillation is revisited. Firstly, we summarized the underlying formulations, such as the equation of motion and its conversion into numerically integrable form and then explained computational procedures including the treatment of inner core-outer core boundary and core-mantle boundary, while the latter information has not been explicitly given in most publications. Secondly, we re-calculated the periods of Earth's free oscillation modes (period >200 s) for PREM model. In doing so we acquired the values of modes missing in Dziewonski and Anderson (1981). As a case observation, one seismogram after 2011 Tohoku earthquake recorded at Daejeon, Korea (KIGAM seismic station) was briefly analyzed to identify free oscillation mode excitations on its spectra. The material in this article will be most clear guide for those on calculating the Earth's free oscillation mode.
In this paper, implementation of digital control for critical conduction mode power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is presented. Critical conduction mode is widely used in medium and low power conversion application due to its minimized MOSFET turn-on loss and diode reverse-recovery problem. However, it needs additional zero current detection circuit and maximum frequency limit to properly turn the MOSFET on and avoid the excessive switching loss in light load operation. This paper explains the digital IC implementation and verifies its operation with 200-W prototype PFC rectifier.

A high-Power continuous-wave (CW) ten-vane double-strapped magnetron oscillator has been investigated using three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical simulation code, MAGIC3D. The resonant modes and their resonant frequencies of the ten-vane strapped magnetron resonator were obtained to show a large mode separation near the ${\pi}$-mode. An electron cloud formed in an anode-cathode gap, called an interaction space was confined well enough to result in no leakage current. Five spokes were clearly observed in the electron cloud, which definitely ensured the ${\pi}$-mode oscillation in the ten-vane magnetron. Numerical simulations predicted that the saturated microwave output power measured at the coaxial output port was 5.41 kW at the microwave frequency of 893 MHz, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency of 72.6% when the external axial magnetic field was 1150 gauss and the electron beam voltage and current were 6 kV and 1.25 A, respectively.

Switching power supply systems are widely used in many industrial fields. Power factor correction (PFC) circuits have a tendency to be applied in new power supply designs. The input active power factor correction (APFC) circuits can be implemented in either the two-stage approach or the single-stage approach. The two-stage approach can be classified into boost type PFC circuit and dc/dc converter. The power factor correction circuit with a boost converter used as an input power source is studied in this paper. In a boost power factor correction circuit there are two feedback control loops, which are a current feedback loop and a voltage feedback loop. In this paper, the regulation performance of output voltage and compensator to improve the transient response presented at the continuous conduction mode (CCM) of the boost PFC circuit is analyzed. The validity of designed boost PFC circuit is confirmed by MATLAB simulation and experimental results.
This paper presents a novel circuit topology of a high efficiency single-phase power conditioner. This power conditioner is composed of time-sharing sinewave absolute pulse width modulated boost chopper with a bypass diode in the first power processing stage and time-sharing sinewave pulse width modulated full-bridge inverter in the second power processing stage operated by time-sharing dual mode pulse pattern control scheme. The unique operating principle of the two power processing stage with time-sharing dual mode sinewave modulation scheme is described with a design example. This paper proposes also a sinewave tracking voltage controlled soft switching PWM boost chopper with a passive auxiliary edge-resonant snubber. The new conceptual operating principle of this novel power conditioner related to new energy utilization system is presented and discussed through the experimental results.
This paper presents a high performance DC-DC boost converter by current-mode control method. As load current change, the converter change PWM/PFM operation automatically. current-mode DC-DC boost converter is implemented in a standard $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The peak efficiency was 94 % with a switching frequency of 1.2MHz.

With the significant growth of the number of vehicles environmental problems is raised. NOx SOx, and PM emissions in diesel powered vehicles are larger than that in gasoline because the development of pollutants reduction techniques has not been yet achieved. So it is need to develop after-tratment or to convert into alternative fuel to satisfy emission regula-tion. Among the after-treatment systems to reduce the diesel emissions studies with diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) are done greatly. In this study using DOC reduction efficiency with the change of temperature and catalyst loading was calculated through measurements of CO, HC, PM. and SOX.
