An intermodal switch based on optically-induced (through optical Kerr effect) periodic coupling in a two-mode waveguide is described and demonstrated. A high power pump beam injected into the two modes of the waveguide produced a periodic modulation of the refractive index profile with a period of modal beat length. this causes an intermodal coupling of the prove beam. The operating principle was successfully demonstrated in an elliptical core two-mode fiber with a counter-propagating pump-probe scheme.
This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.
To overcome problems in tracking error related to the unmodeled dynamics in the high speed operation of industrial robots, many researchers have used sliding mode control, which is robust against parameter variations and payload changes. However, these algorithms cannot reduce the inherent chattering which is caused by excessive switching inputs around the sliding surface. This study proposes a fuzzy-sliding mode control algorithm to reduce the chattering of the sliding mode control by fuzzy rules within a pre-determined dead zone. Trajectory tracking simulations and experiments show that chattering can be reduced prominently by the fuzzy-sliding mode control algorithm compared to a sliding mode control with two dead zones, and the proposed control algorithm is robust to changes in payload. The proposed control algorithm is implemented to the SCARA (selected compliance articulated robot assembly) robot using a DSP (digital signal processor) for high speed calculations.
A new method for reducing the common-mode current generated by the voltage variations in a two-inverter air conditioner system by applying a synchronized pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy is proposed. The PWM signals of the master-mode inverter are generated based on the reference voltage, while those of the slave-mode inverter are output in the opposite direction when the master-mode inverter changes its switching state. However, the slave-mode control results in a mismatch between the reference voltage and the actual output voltage that is modified by synchronized control operation. The proposed method is capable of reducing and controlling this voltage error by performing signal selection in the vector space of the slave-mode inverter, which mitigates the distortion of the phase current. The efficacy of this method in reducing conducted emissions has been validated both theoretically and experimentally.
This paper proposes the method to implement the railroad switching point heating system using the hybrid of the photovoltaic and wind power. The goal of the implementation of the railroad switching point heating system is to prevent freezing of the snow in the winter. The heating system of railway used to supply electricity through photovoltaic and wind power to prevent freezing. Hot wires of the railroad switching point heating system are used about 2kW of electric energy at the day. The electric energy of 2kW used the length of the hot wires about 3m. As the ON and/or OFF mode considering the tracks temperature and the ambient temperature, so the way the use of power-saving effect. In addition, the system can be used the railroad switching point heating system in winter and railway signal and street lights around the track in summer. In experiment, we acquired the power data according to time at the day of photovoltaic and wind power. We confirmed the temperature rise using the heating cable for 3m of $85^{\circ}C$, 30W/m. The temperature rise of the heating cable changes the temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ after 10 minutes and $11^{\circ}C$ after 10 minutes. We have confirmed the possibility of the railroad switching point heating system using the hybrid of the photovoltaic and wind power.
This work deals with a switching method for minimizing overcurrent in a three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter with frequency modulation. Generally, a three-phase interleaved DC-DC converter is used to reduce a current ripple component. The combined operation of three-phase and two-phase converters can significantly reduce the ripple component. However, the conventional PWM method cannot solve severe overcurrent during phase transfer or frequency variation for power control. To overcome this problem, this work proposes a new PWM switching method. A 3 kW DC-DC power converter is designed and implemented, and the converter is operated in discontinuous current mode with varying switching frequencies for power control. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed switching method. The proposed switching method can be widely used in the field of current ripple reduction for three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converters.
This paper deals with novel soft-switching method for a bidirectional DC-DC converter in battery charging and discharging system. The proposed soft-switching method provides ZVS and ZCS at turn-on, and ZVS at turn-off of the switch in both charging and discharging operation modes. The soft switching condition can be obtained in wide load range, and provide low switching loss as well as low voltage spike at turn-off of the switch. Proposed method is analyzed in charging and discharging mode. Simulation and experimental results validate the usefulness of the proposed soft-switching method.
