Mode superposition method(MSM) is the most commonly used for solving linear response problems of structural dynamics. The major advantage of MSM is that usually a small number of lower mode is sufficient to analysis the response. However, the convergence is slow and many modes would be needed to give an accurate MSM in large structure with many degrees of freedom. The inaccuracies of MSM are caused by mode truncation in the solution. These demerits can be overcome by use of the mode acceleration method(MAM). Example analyses are carried out in simple beam subjected to harmonic loadings and compared the convergence of the joint displacements by the two methods. For relatively low frequency loadings, a good results was obtained by the lowest one mode in MAM, so the method is more economic in numerical analysis on an accurate solution.

The modal analysis based on deformations is the method to drived dynamic responsed from superposition of natural frequency and mode shape. In order to free vibration analysis of the structures, Aluminum-made model is used in experiment. The dynamic characteristic of the structures are determined from acceleration measurements using impulse hammer. Experimenrt input and output signal are derive from impact hammer and the one accerometer. This paper present three methods for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure with theory value and finite element analysis, experiment. The results were good approximated about natural frequency and mode shape.

In this paper, the hydroelastic behavior of a mat-type large floating structure is analyzed in time domain by using mode superposition method. The time-memory function is estimated by Fourier transforming the wave damping coefficients, which are computed by a higher-order boundary element method based on potential theory. Meanwhile, the structural response is obtained by time integrating the eigenmodes of the structure. Numerical examples are made for three test cases on the scaled model of a mat-type large floating structure ; weight pull-up case, weight drop case and weight moving case. In all three cases, the numerical results coincide well with experimental data.

In this paper, a numerical procedure for the natural vibration analysis of plates with openings and carlings based on the assumed mode method is extended to assess their forced response. Firstly, natural response of plates with openings and carlings is calculated from the eigenvalue equation derived by using Lagrange's equation of motion. Secondly, the mode superposition method is applied to determine frequency response. Mindlin theory is adopted for plate modelling and the effect of openings is taken into account by subtracting their potential and kinetic energies from the corresponding plate energies. Natural and frequency response of plates with openings and carlings subjected to point excitation force and enforced acceleration at boundaries, respectively, is analysed by using developed in-house code. For the validation of the developed method and the code, extensive numerical results, related to plates with different opening shape, carlings and boundary conditions, are compared with numerical data from the relevant literature and with finite element solutions obtained by general finite element tool.

The mode superposition method(MSM) for the forced transverse vibration analysis of structures subject to Timoshenko beam analogy, which had originally been developed by Ormondroyd and McGoldrick, is reviewed to formulate it in more general form taking account of rotary inertia, dampings in separate terms of internal and external ones, and simultaneous action of exciting forces and moments. To investigate some general features of the method in practical utilizations, resonant maximum amplitudes of 4 high speed ships under concentrated sinusoidal excitation at the stern are calculated by both MSM and the finite difference method(FDM). For the FDM the hulls are discretized into 40 equal segments, and in utilization of MSM contributions of the first six modes are summed up to obtain responses up to the six-nodes resonant mode. The numerical results show that MSM gives slightly higher values, $4{\sim}10%$, than those by FDM. Since there is always uncertainty in the damping estimation of actual systems, influences of the damping magnitude on resonant amplitudes and a practical method to estimate modal damping coefficients are discussed.

In this paper, a method for the estimation of structural displacements using structure's mode shapes and accelerations is suggested to reduce the disadvantages of acceleration time integration method. Acceleration time integration method requires accurate information on initial conditions, and errors caused by noise can be accumulated during time integration. To avoid these problems, the method for the estimation of structural displacements based on mode superposition method is developed and two vibration experiments for cantilever beam are conducted to verify this method. Static displacements and dynamic displacements of beam structure are estimated using measured accelerations from experiments and mode shapes of cantilever beam, and they are compared with measured displacements using laser displacement sensor. From these results, the validity and usefulness of this method are verified.

The complicate software failure system is defined to the superposition of the points of failure from several component point process. Because the likelihood function is difficulty in computing, we consider Gibbs sampler using iteration sampling based method. For each observed failure epoch, we applied to latent variables that indicates with component of the superposition mode. For model selection, we explored the posterior Bayesian criterion and the sum of relative errors for the comparison simple pattern with superposition model. A numerical example with NHPP simulated data set applies the thinning method proposed by Lewis and Shedler[25] is given, we consider Goel-Okumoto model and Weibull model with GOS, inference of parameter is studied. Using the posterior Bayesian criterion and the sum of relative errors, as we would expect, the superposition model is best on model under diffuse priors.

Acoustic radiation efficiency is a crucial factor to estimate Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) of ships accurately. This paper describes a numerical method to analyse acoustic radiation efficiency of one side-wetted rectangular Mindlin plate with simply supported boundaries excited by a harmonic point force. Transverse displacements of plate and acoustic radiation pressures are evaluated by the mode superposition method. The acoustic radiation efficiencies analyzed by both Mindlin and thin plate theories show little differences at monopole and corner modes of low frequency regions but relatively large differences at edge and critical modes of high frequency regions. Especially, the critical frequency with the highest acoustic radiation efficiency evaluated by the Mindlin plate theory is higher than that of thin plate theory. In addition, the acoustic loading effect of fluid also increases bending wave-number of plate and its critical frequency. Finally, the acoustic radiation characteristics of plates with different aspect ratios and thicknesses through numerical analyses are investigated and discussed.

This paper investigates the dynamics of a HDD spindle system due to the change of FDBs. Flying height of the HDD spindle system is determined through the static analysis of the FDBs, and the stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated through the dynamic analysis of the FDBs. Free vibration characteristics and shock response of the HDD spindle system are analyzed by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. Experimental modal test is also performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. This research shows that the stiffness coefficients of journal heating mostly affect the rocking frequencies because their magnitude are within the range of the stiffness of supporting structure. It also shows that the damping coefficients of thrust bearing mostly affect the axial frequency because the stiffness of thrust bearing is much smaller that that of supporting structure.
