Improvement of Biological Control against Bacterial Wilt by the Combination of Biocontrol Agents with Different Mechanisms of Action

  • Despite the increased interests in biological control of soilborne diesease for environmental protection, biological control of bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum have not provided consistent or satisfying results. To enhance the control efficacy and reducing the inconsistency and variability, combinations of specific strains of microorganisms, each having a specific mechanism of control, were applied in this study. More than 30 microorganisms able to reduce the activity of pathogen by specific mechanism of action were identified and tested for their disease suppressive effects. After in vitro compatibility examinations, 21 individual strains and 15 combinations were tested in the greenhouse. Results indicated three-way combinations of different mode of control, TS3-7+A253-16+SKU78 and TS1-5+A100-1+SKU78, enhanced disease suppression by 70%, as compared to 30-50% reduction for their individual treatments. This work suggests that combining multiple traits antagonizing the pathogen improve efficacy of the biocontrol agents against Ralstonia solanacearum.

  • We have developed a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a single cell gap and a low twisted nematic (LTN) mode in combination with a self-integrated retardation layer. The retardation layer was made of UV curable liquid crystalline material in one step of photo masking process and has both the homeotropic and the planar parts. The proposed transflective configuration has advantages in a simple fabrication process, and the possibility for a single driving scheme due to the similarity between the transmittance and the reflectance.

  • In this paper, the feedback linearization technique is used with the sliding mode control for nonlinear systems. This combination of the two control techniques is achieved by introducing a novel sliding surface which has the nominal dynamics of the original system controlled by feedback linearization technique. Its design is based on the augmented system whose dynamics have a higher order than that of the original system. The reaching phase is removed by using an initial virtual state which makes the initial sliding function equal to zero.

  • A new $H_{\infty}$ robust controller is proposed by using Sliding Mode Control (SMC).   • This paper discusses the theoretical researches subject to elastic buckling problems of the structures. The purpose is to ensure the characteristic of buckling be true by arc-length method and the finite element method. The difficulties in processes calculating the equilibrium curve after buckling is to get the equilibrium owe near singular point at which the determinant of stiffness matrix is zero. The purpose of the load-displacement curve is to determine the buckling load of the structure, and further to get the information about the characteristic after buckling. Here, this paper expresses the incremental solution at particular point by the linear combination of both homogeneous mode and particular mode, then uses the method which gets the unknown parameter including this function, through trial-and-error method including modified N-R convergence process. Finally, this paper describes the multiple bifurcation of truss dome as the numerical examples according to this algorithm.

  • Modal damping characteristics of the flexural vibration of a sandwich beam with paaially inserted viscoelastic layer have been quantitatively studied using the finite element analysis in combination with an experiment. Antisymmetric mode shapes of the flexural vibration were visualized by the holographic interferometry and agreed with those calculated by the finite element simulation. Effects of the length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on the system loss factor($\mu$) and resonant frequency($\omega$) were considerably latge at both symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the sandwich beam.

  • Microgrid is a small-scale power system composed of distributed generators, energy storage system and loads, and can operate in the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. This paper presents optimal design procedures for remote microgrid. The design program is based on the economic evaluations including the feasibility study module, optimal combination and allocation of DERs, power network design and the reduction of the GHG emmission. This program which is suggested in this paper shows good performance as a tool of remote microgrid design.

  • Conventional Switched Mode Power Supplies(SMPS) with diode-capacitor rectifier have distorted input current waveform with high harmonic contents. Typically, these SMPS have a power factor lower than 0,65. To improve with this problem the power factor correction(PFC) circuit of power supplies has to be introduced. PFC circuit have tendency to be applied in new power supply designs. The input active power factor correction circuits can be implemented using either the two-stage or the single-stage approach. In this paper, the comparative analysis of power factor correction circuit using feedforward control with average current mode single-stage flyback method converter and two-stage converter which is combination of boost and flyback converter. The two prototypes of 50W were designed and tested a laboratory experimental. Also, the comparative analysis is confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper, The control problem for a series DC motor is considered to adaptive fuzzy sliding-mode control scheme. Based on a nonlinear mathematical model of a series connected DC motor, instead of the combination of a nonlinear transformation and state feedback(feedback linearization) reduces the nonlinear control design. To demonstrate its effectiveness, an experimental study of this controller is presented. Two sets of fuzzy rule bases are utilized to represent the equivalent control input with unknown system functions of the main target. The membership functions of the THEN-part, which is used to construct a suitable equivalent control of SMC, are changed according to the adaptive law. With such a design scheme, we not only maintain the distribution of membership functions over state space but also reduce computing time considerably.

Development of Vibrational Analysis Algorithm for Truncated Conical Shells (끝이 잘린 원추형 셸의 진동해석 알고리즘의 개발)

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of truncated conical shell with uniform thickness by the transfer influence coefficient method. The classical thin shell theory based upon the $Fl\ddot{u}gge$ theory is assumed and the governing equations of a conical shell are written as a coupled set of first order differential equations using the transfer matrix. The Runge-Kutta-Gill integration and bisection method are used to solve the governing differential equations and to compute the eigenvalues respectively. The natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated numerically for the truncated conical shell with any combination of boundary conditions at the edges. And all boundary conditions and the intermediate supports between conical shell and foundation could be treated only by adequately varying the values of the spring constants. Numerical results are compared with existing exact and numerical solutions of other methods.
