This paper proposes the modified image contrast enhancement technique for small-sized display of mobile handset. Sample images are user interface images, in which scaled up wVGA($800{\times}480$) from qVGA($320{\times}240$) that we can see easily in mobile handset. The display size of mobile handset is relatively small, so the goal of this paper is to simplify image contrast enhancement algorithm based on conventional HE (Histogram Equalization) algorithm and improve computational effectiveness to minimize power consumption in real hardware IC. In this paper, we adopt HE technique, which is classical and widely used for image contrast enhancement. At first, the input frame image is partitioned to temporal sub-frames and then analyzes gray level histogram of each sub-frame. In case that the analyzed histogram of some sub-frames deviates so much from reference level (it means that the sub-frame image components consist of too bright ones or dark ones), apply DHE(Dynamic Histogram Equalization) algorithm. In the other case, apply classical Histogram Linearization (or Global HE) algorithm. Also we compare the HE technique with gamma LUT (Look-Up Table) method, which is known as the simplest technique to enhance image contrast.
Mobile image retrieval is one of the most exciting and fastest growing research fields in the area of multimedia technology. As the amount of digital contents continues to grow users are experiencing increasing difficulty in finding specific images in their image libraries. This paper proposes a new efficient and effective mobile image retrieval method that applies a weighted combination of color and texture utilizing spatial-color and second order statistics. The system for mobile image searches runs in real-time on an iPhone and can easily be used to find a specific image. To evaluate the performance of the new method, we assessed the iPhone simulations performance in terms of average precision and recall using several image databases and compare the results with those obtained using existing methods. Experimental trials revealed that the proposed descriptor exhibited a significant improvement of over 13% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to the best of the other descriptors.
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have already been commercialized for the mobile-phone display, TV, and lighting panels. Even though the OLED display for the mobile phones is now considered as the main stream display for the application, the OLED TV and lighting panels are having difficulty in their market due to their high prices despite the better performance to the competitors. In recent years, roll-to-roll production of the OLED has begun to be examined, and this method is opening a way to solve the high price problem. In this article, we introduce several important processes for roll-to-roll production of OLED and explain the development status to date.
This study presents a new algorithm to detect the facial feature in a color image entered from the mobile device with complex backgrounds and undefined distance between camera's location and the face. Since skin color model with Hough transformation spent approximately 90$\%$ of running time to extract the fitting ellipse for detection of the facial feature, we have changed the approach to the simple geometric vector operation, called a TS(Triangle-Square) transformation. As the experimental results, this gives benefit of reduced run time. We have similar ratio of face detection to other methods with fast speed enough to be used on real-time identification system in mobile environments.

In this study, we propose how th implement a MDDI(Mobile Display Digital Interface) protocol packet generation method in software. MDDI protocol is widely used in mobile display device. MDDI protocol packets are generated by software within micro processor. This method needs the minimum hardware configuration. In order to implementation of this method, we design a hardware platform with a high performance microprocessor and a FPGA. The packets generated by software within microprocessor are converted into LVDS signals, and transmitted by hardware within FPGA. This study suggests the benefits of the way how software can easily create a variety of packet. But, this proposed method takes more time in packet transmission compared to the traditional method. This weakness remains as a future challenge, which can be soon improved.
Investigations of retrospective dosimetry have shown that components of mobile phones are suitable as emergency dosimeters in case of radiological incidents. For physical dosimetry, components can be read out using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and phototransferred thermoluminescence (PTTL) methods to determine the absorbed dose. This paper deals with a feasibility study of display glass from modern mobile phones that are measured by thermally assisted (Ta) optically stimulated luminescence. Violet (VSL, 405 nm) and infrared (IRSL, 850 nm) LEDs were used for optical stimulation and two protocols (Ta-VSL and Ta-IRSL) were tested. The aim was to systematically investigate the luminescence properties, compare the results to blue stimulated Ta-BSL protocol (458 nm) and to develop a robust measurement protocol for the usage as an emergency dosimeter after an incident with ionizing radiation. First, the native signals were measured to calculate the zero dose signal. Next, the reproducibility and dose response of the luminescence signals were analyzed. Finally, the signal stability was tested after the storage of irradiated samples at room temperature. In general, the developed Ta-IRSL and Ta-VSL protocols indicate usability, however, further research is needed to test the potential of a new protocol for physical retrospective dosimetry.
A fully automatic and computationally efficient method is proposed for intelligent display of soccer video on small multimedia mobile devices. The rapid progress of the multimedia signal processing has contributed to the extensive use of multimedia devices with a small LCD panel. With these emerging small mobile devices, the video sequences captured for standard- or HDTV broadcasting may give the small-display-viewers uncomfortable experiences in understanding what is happening in a scene. For instance, in a soccer video sequence taken by a long-shot camera technique, the tiny objects (e.g., soccer ball and players) may not be clearly viewed on the small LCD panel. Thus, an intelligent display technique is needed for small-display-viewers. To this end, one of the key technologies is to determine region of interest (ROI), which is a part of the scene that viewers pay more attention to than other regions. In this paper, the focus is on soccer video display for mobile devices. Instead of taking visual saliency into account, we take domain-specific approach to exploit the characteristics of the soccer video. The proposed scheme includes three modules; ground color learning, shot classification, and ROI determination. The experimental results show the propose scheme is capable of intelligent video display on mobile devices.
The evolution of a multi viewer autostereoscopic display is described. Development of the display was originally a part of the EC funded 'ATTEST' project and continues as another EC project 'MUTED'. The design of the original display is presented and the limitations of the prototype are described. The current iteration of the design is presented.

$Reflex^{TM}$ display technology based on bistable, reflective, and flexible Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Displays is being developed and mass produced for new and non-traditional applications. These applications allow for personalization of mobile devices, very low cost display systems, and more. This display technology, its status, and new applications are discussed in this paper.
Consumers who use mobile applications for their skin care are increasing due to increasing interest in skin care and smart phone use. A survey was conducted to select popular skin care mobile applications to be installed in the smart phone targeting 1,000 men and women in South Korea who are interested in their skin care. Questioned items included skin care awareness and recognition, skin care type, and the intention of using skin health care mobile services. The respondents thought the best skin as 'Flawless skin (52.3%)'. Also, 'Skin trouble' and 'Skin aging' were their major concerns. 47.1% of the respondents used mobile skin care applications, and 56.6% intended to try new mobile skin care services. The results on interesting field of skin care showed significant difference depending on gender, marital status, and annual average household income. Moreover, the results on effort made for skin care showed significant difference depending on age, gender, and marital status. They wanted the functions such as 'Review on cosmetic products by brand (23.8%)', 'Self skincare method (16.8%)', 'Continuous monitoring service (16.2%)', 'Information on cosmetic products (13.4%)'. The result of this study would be reliable as basic material for skincare mobile service area. Further studies could be focused on developing application in accordance with needs and how it should be applied.
