A new method of estimating the pose of a mobile-task robot is developed based upon an active calibration scheme. The utility of a mobile-task robot is widely recognized, which is formed by the serial connection of a mobile robot and a task robot. To be an efficient and precise mobile-task robot, the control uncertainties in the mobile robot should be resolved. Unless the mobile robot provides an accurate and stable base, the task robot cannot perform various tasks. For the control of the mobile robot, an absolute position sensor is necessary. However, on account of rolling and slippage of wheels on the ground, there does not exist any reliable position sensor for the mobile robot. This paper proposes an active calibration scheme to estimate the pose of a mobile robot that carries a task robot on the top. The active calibration scheme is to estimate a pose of the mobile robot using the relative position/orientation to a known object whose location, size, and shape are known a priori. For this calibration, a camera is attached on the top of the task robot to capture the images of the objects. These images are used to estimate the pose of the camera itself with respect to the known objects. Through the homogeneous transformation, the absolute position/orientation of the camera is calculated and propagated to get the pose of a mobile robot. Two types of objects are used here as samples of work-pieces: a polygonal and a cylindrical object. With these two samples, the proposed active calibration scheme is verified experimentally.
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for planning an optimal path to capture a moving object by a mobile robot in real-time. The direction and rotational angular velocity of the moving object are estimated using the Kalman filter, a state estimator. It is demonstrated that the moving object is tracked by using a 2-DOF active camera mounted on the mobile robot and then captured by a mobile manipulator. The optimal path to capture the moving object is dependent on the initial conditions of the mobile robot, and the real-time planning of the robot trajectory is definitely required for the successful capturing of the moving object. Therefore the algorithm that determines the optimal path to capture a moving object depending on the initial conditions of the mobile robot and the conditions of a moving object is proposed in this paper. For real-time implementation, the optimal representative blocks have been utilized for the experiments to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper extends the authors' prior work on the regulation of flexible space structures via partial feedback linearization (PFL) methods to articulated systems. Recursive relations introduced by Jain and Rodriguez are central to the efficient formulation of models via Poincare's form of Lagrange's equations. Such models provide for easy construction of feedback linearizing control laws. Adaptation is shown to be an effective way of reducing sensitivity to uncertain parameters. An application to a flexible platform with mobile remote manipulator system is highlighted.
Future robots, especially service and personal robots, will need much more intelligence, robustness and user-friendliness. The ability to learn contributes to these characteristics and is, therefore, becoming more and more important. Three of the numerous varieties of learning are discussed together with results of real-world experiments with three autonomous robots: (1) the acquisition of map knowledge by a mobile robot, allowing it to navigate in a network of corridors, (2) the acquisition of motion control knowledge by a calibration-free manipulator, allowing it to gain task-related experience and improve its manipulation skills while it is working, and (3) the ability to learn how to perform service tasks ...
Many locomotion purpose robots are being built and are under research such as mobile manipulator and biped humanoid robot, etc. Dynamic posture stability of these robots is based on the ZMP point. For getting stable ZMP trajectory, some method has been developed but is too complex and time consuming which leads to inability in generating on-line ZMP trajectory. In this paper, we give a qualitative study about behavior of ZMP in biped walking robot through visualization. This result gives intuitive understanding about behavior of ZMP under various robot state.
In the nuclear power plant, there are several cylindrical vessels such as reactor vessel, pressuriser and so on. The vessels are usually constructed by welding large rolled plates, forged sections or nozzle pipes together. In order to assure the integrity of the vessel, these welds should be periodically inspected using sensors such as ultrasonic transducer or visual cameras. This inspection is usually conducted under water to minimize exposure to the radioactively contaminated vessel walls. The inspections have been performed by using a conventional inspection machine with a big structural sturdy column, however, it is so huge and heavy that maintenance and handling of the machine are extremely difficult. It requires much effort to transport the system to the site and also requires continuous use of the utility's polar crane to move the manipulator into the building and then onto the vessel. Setup beside the vessel requires a large volume of work preparation area and several shifts to complete. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed an underwater mobile robot guided by the laser pointer, and performed a series of experiments both in the mockup and in the real reactor vessel. This paper introduces our robotic inspection system and the laser guidance of the mobile robot as well as the results of the functional test.
Passive velocity field control (PVFC) was previously developed for fully mechanical systems, in which the motion task was specified by behaviors in terms of a velocity field and the closed-loop was passive with respect to the supply rate given by the environment input. However, the PVFC was only applied to a single manipulator. The proposed control law was derived geometrically and the geometric and robustness properties of the closed-loop system were also analyzed. In this paper, we propose a virtual passivity-based algorithm to apply decentralized control to multiple 3wheeled mobile robotic systems whose subsystems are under nonholonomic constraints and convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover, it is shown that multiple robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems converge to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative mobile robot systems. Finally, the application of proposed virtual passivity-based decentralized algorithm via system augmentation is applied to trace a circle and the simulation results is presented in order to show effectiveness for the decentralized control algorithm proposed in this research.
In this paper we propose a new visual servoing method for door opening with mobile manipulator. We use an eye-to-hand system that stereo camera is mounted on mobile platform, and adopt the position-based method. The previous methods for door opening mostly used eye-in-hand system with mono camera and required predefined knowledge such as radius and position about door grip, which was mainly caused by using mono cam era. This is also a severe constraint for pursuing general-purpose algorithm for door opening. For overcoming such drawback, we use stereo camera and suggest a new method that detect the door grip and estimate its pose from stereo depth information without predefined knowledge. Al...

Jeha Ryu Department of Mechatronics, Kwangju Institute of Science and Technology This paper presents an application of a robust adaptive control strategy to HexaSlide type six degrees-of-freedom parallel manipulators. The HexaSlide type parallel manipulators are characterized as an architecture with constant link lengths that are attached to moving sliders on the ground and to a mobile platform. The proposed control law is developed based on a simplified second order system dynamic equation in joint space with uncertain mass, damper, spring, and Coulomb friction terms. These uncertain parameters are updated by an adaptation law that is derived by Lyapunov stability theorem. A robust adaptive control law by using the boundary layer is designed for the purpose of compensating for the neglected dynamic effects of the mobile platform and the six moving links that are modeled as a disturbance term. Experimental results show good and fast tracking performance.
